I think it’s spelled “Taveras.” :)

I’m actually less excited by Meso than I was 12 months ago. The caught stealing percentage regressed to his sub-30% career norm, and the bat was very good, but not quite what I would call outstanding in 2011.

I like Devin as a top 10-15 type position prospect (i.e. 4-5 WAR over his prime years), but just short of the “reasonably plausible superstar” category that a top 4-6 position prospect would warrant.

Yoenis Cespedes

Kind of joking here as he’s obviously not yet eligible for this list, but in all seriousness, once this guy becomes eligible he’s easily top 50 I would think. Not trying to jump too much into the hype, but just curious where others see him in comparison to some of these other prospects.

near the top

He’s a great player. I think he’s the Yu Darvish of the position players half of the list myself. He’s 26 though. I’d leave him off just like Darvish though becuase so many people just wouldn;’t vote for him.

disagree

. . . at least here. this is his first mention and he’s a highly accomplished Cuban player who, isn’t short of physical tools either. Around here, he is really underhyped at this point.

I know I may be a homer

but Bogaerts has the highest ISO of any player in the SAL league at 18 ever other than Mike Stanton and Adrian Beltre

Bogaerts

very excited about him as well. Shot up to #1 prospect in Red Sox system IMO. Can he stay at SS???

Mesoraco vs D'Arnaud

Is it me or, is there nothing that makes Mesoraco a better prospect than Travis D’Arnaud? The only thing separating them, merit-wise, not scouting-wise, is that Mesoraco had a good age 23 season at AAA. D’Arnaud had a similar year as a 22 year old in AA right? Do we really see a lot of guys play well in AA and, stall in AAA?

It looks like Meso makes more contact but, it could be argued that D’Arnaud has more power (.231 ISo for D’Arnaud vs .195 for Meso)

Defensively, they are similarily good I think. The only thing separating them, that I can see, is having the courage to project D’Arnaud as being as good of a player in AAA as he was in AA. Thats houldn’t be too hard, should it?

I Like D'Arnaud too

I don’t agree that their defense is equal though, D’Arnaud’s is better. Mesoraco is a better prospect though because he’s in AAA, but D’Arnaud is seriously underrated, as is Ryan Lavarnway. Lavarnway is a year older than Mesoraco, and his defense isn’t as good, but he destroyed AAA. He was the only 30 HR catcher this year. He had a crazy 171 wRC+ in AAA, and an overall 154 wRC+. As you said it looks like Mesoraco has more contact, D’arnaud has more power, well Lavarnway has more contact and power than both of them. A crazy .327 ISO in AAA.

by Bososx13 on Nov 10, 2011 2:06 PM EST up reply actions

Mesoraco has more patience as well

higher BB and lower K means better projected OBP overall for Mesoraco as opposed to D’Arnaud. i don’t think D’Arnaud is going to have that much more power to compensate.

by blue bulldog on Nov 10, 2011 2:26 PM EST up reply actions

I'm actually not sure that d'Arnaud has more power at all

He may have the ISO advantage this year but Mesoraco had a .300 ISO in AA last year, though in a smaller sample. I just wouldn’t quote this year’s ISO numbers and try to claim that d’Arnaud has an advantage. I think they’re pretty equal power wise, and I’m not sure the defensive difference in the two is great enough to overcome Mesoraco’s advantage in plate discipline.

FWIW, my next five after Mesoraco are Rendon, d’Arnaud, Montero, Bogaerts, and Sano.

Whoops

Fit in Wil Myers between Rendon and d’Arnaud. Obviously I can’t read well today.

Very close

for me too, with a slight edge to Meso. One other point that I think is important, but far from the only deciding factor, is the K and BB rates. In 2011 Meso had a 10.4% BB rate and 16.6% K rate (1.6 K/BB) at AAA; d’Arnaud had a 7.1% BB rate and 21.5% K rate (3.03 K/BB) at AA.

Overall, d’Arnaud gets a slight edge defensively, while Meso is the better bet at this point to excel in the bigs offensively, while also providing solid D. In the end, I would gladly take either on my team.

Next five for me

Montero, Mesoraco, Rendon, Myers, Sano.

I get the positional arguments for Mesoraco over Montero, but I just think Montero’s a safer bet to hit, and hit well, for a long time.

by Brownson on Nov 10, 2011 2:33 PM EST reply actions

I agree with that

. . . however, I don’t see what makes Montero a better bet to hit more than Anthony Redon or Wil Myers. They both project to have defensive value as well. Not sure Montero does.
