Zach Cone is a junior at Georgia. He is an athletic OF that can play CF currently but will likely be a corner OF. He has the arm to play RF and that is likely where he'll end up. He is very athletic and comes from a family of athletes. His father was a running back at Georgia Tech and his brother is currently a wide receiver at Georgia Tech. He is a a right handed hitter and thrower and is 6'2", 200 LBS. He was a 3rd round pick in 2008 by the Angels.
On the bases, Cone isn't a burner but he is above average and could pose a threat to steal 20 bases as a pro. He picks his spots to run and that allows his speed to play up. It also allows him to play all 3 OF positions.
At the plate he has improved from his freshman year to his sophomore year. He has shown good power both seasons and continued to improve as the season progressed last year. His approach at the plate and consistency are the main things he needs to improve on. He won't hit for a lot of power, but 15-20 HR's isn't out of the question and he could potentially hit 25 if he gains more consistency and strength. This season will show a lot about his true power, and many collegiate hitters power potential.
The NCAA mandated that all teams use a different style of bat this season, and it will decrease offense in college ball this year. If a player hits for power this year, it is for real and will translate well to pro ball.
I expect Cone to be a 1st rounder or a supplemental pick in this years draft.
