Dynasty League Trade Question
I own Carlos Gonzalez in a dynasty league, and I'm considering trading him to capitalize on what could very well have been a career year. I have two options I'm heavily considering, one that focuses on quantity over quality and another that is the opposite.
In general, I'm trying to get my team younger with more cost-controlled players (a prospect hits FA after his 5th year of eligibility, so CarGo has two more years before he hits the big money). With that in mind, which of these packages would you choose? Or would you hold onto him?
Package #1
Matt LaPorta (I'm wary of him, as he's burnt me before - I'm just not sure he'll ever *get* it)
Randall Delgado
Jose Iglesias
Peter Bourjos
Ryan Westmoreland
Kris Medlen
Daniel Cortes
Zack Wheeler/Nick Weglarz/Hank Conger (if you choose this one, which of these three would you want?)
Package #2
Desmond Jennings
John Lamb
Carlos Perez (I already have Wilin Rosario and Gary Sanchez, but you can't have too many good C prospects)
Tyler Skaggs

I probably wouldn't deal CarGo, But
If you’re going to move him for one of those prospect packages, i’d take door #2.
Frank Costanza: `What the hell did you trade Jay Buhner for?! `He had 30 home runs and over 100 RBIs last year. He`s got a rocket for an arm. You don`t know what the hell you`re doing!.......... George `Big Stein` Steinbrenner: `Well, Buhner was a good prospect, no question about it. `But my baseball people loved Ken Phelps` bat. They kept saying `Ken Phelps! Ken Phelps!` `
Neither
I think CarGo is in for some regression but I think with 2 more years before FA you could potentially get a lot more down the line than if you were to take one of those deals right now…
I’d suggest wait it out and see what’s available near the ASB if these are your best offers
I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'

Depends...
Is your team competitive for the title this year and/or next? If yes, keep CarGo. If no, I’d say make the deal – I doubt his value will ever be much higher than it is right now.
As for which deal, I say it’s a toss-up. I’m not as big a fan as many are of Jennings, admittedly, and I like Delgado more than most.
To me the keys are CPerez & Lamb vs. Conger & Bourjos. In deal #1, both guys are ready for (or at) the bigs, whereas the other two will likely start in AA. I agree with you about LaPorta – not likely to get it.
If you could turn those 4 or 5 questionable names (Medlen, Cortes, etc.) for one quality prospect, I’d be tempted to do deal #1 (yes, I am insane).
I'd pass
Neither offer has enough to sway me.
CarGo may have had a career year but should still be pretty damn valuable. You need to get more than this to move him. You can probably still get these kind of offers for him next year.
I agree with the sentiment of those who chose #2… try to work on that guy to get more. If not, no big deal. Hold onto him and try this again next winter…
Door 2
LaPorta came off hip surgery last season, even the Indians manager has been saying he will give him a complete mulligan, he’s shown good patience at the plate, and the power is still in there, I’d be more concerned if he was hitting HR’s but the patience wasn’t there anymore.
Delgado is a rare safe bet to be at least a #3 starter in the majors while also maintaining the strong potential to be a #2 or an ace, plus he will pitch in the NL East while Lamb will face nasty lineups in the AL.
Iglesias, while not being much of a fantasy stud, is a safe bet to be a mlb regular, his defense will get him to the show, once there he can be very useful, especially in a dynasty setting, I’m not sure if your league is 30 teams or not. But I can certainly see Iglesias hitting around .280-.290 with 5 HR’s and 10-15 SB’s, nothign to sneeze at from the MI position if it is indeed a deep league.
I think Bourjos is probably just as good as Jennings, as they have similar skills across the board while Bourjos has more power in his bat and better outfield defense, doesn’t help in fantasy but it will keep him playing every single day in centerfield. I’d say Jenning will be a Juan Pierre type but Bourjos has a real shot to be a Curtis Granderson, Victorino type, maybe with even more speed. He could produce a line like .275 20 HR 40 SB in his prime, while Jennings could do something like .290 5 HR 50 SB.
While I’m not crazy about Westmoreland’s chances of coming back, if he does come back he has an amazing skillset.
Medlen’s coming off Tommy John but was great last year.
Cortes is a wildcard, he struggled in his winter-league but BA sees him as the mariners next closer. Could be an andrew bailey type deal.
I’d take wheeler or conger from the last 3. Wheeler has a huge upside and SF knows how to develop those young arms. Conger has a very underrated bat, its a .300 hitting bat with even k:bb numbers and some pop, at the catcher position that’s pretty special.
Don’t get me wrong here, I love Jennings but I don’t think his power fully develops, making him kind of one dimensional. I don’t see the Crawford comps at all.
Lamb is nice but he’ll be in the AL and probably has a #2 upside, I like Delgado more alone. Carlos Perez is underrated around baseball but that doesn’t put him above Conger, as we’ve seen him actually do it at higher levels.
Maybe I’m alone but Skaggs would seem like a back of the rotation arm, I like Medlens chances of coming back off TJ surgery in 2012 and being a #3 over Skaggs chances of being a top of the rotation guy.
"Hello. My name is Matthew Berry. I am on a Fantasy Jihad. Prepare to die!"
Going with the consensus
I wouldn’t make either deal as-is. CarGo may never match his 2010 value for fantasy, but he’s still quite a bit better than either of these packages. People forget that he was an elite prospect before he disappeared in the A’s system. Colorado is clearly doing him some good.
But if you’re intent to deal, #2 is the better package. I’d see if that guy will sweeten the pot.
Another idea
If you are intent on moving CarGo, then advertise to the league that he is available and attempt to field better offers from other owners.
i would nail both doors shut
I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

Good offer
But it’s CarGo we’re talking about :P
Agree....neither
CarGo could hit .290 this year and his value will still be more than either package.
I think you can get more.
Brian Sabean would return more calls if he wasn't so busy being the greatest baseball mind in the history of the game.
New Scenario
In a strange turn of events, just when I decided to take him off the market, a better scenario than this popped up. Through a series of trades, I might be able to end up with the following package for CarGo – does this make it worth it?
Will Venable – a guy I like as a sleeper in fantasy; nice power/speed combo
Jenrry Mejia
Alex Liddi
Wil Myers
Nick Franklin
Cole Kimball – I could use a good relief prospect
Cesar Hernandez – I used to write for phuturephillies.com, and as a Phillies prospect-follower, Hernandez is a nice little sleeper at 2B/SS
