The Fantasy/Keeper League Thread
I think one Fanpost would be better than cluttering up the fanposts sidebar with tons of different fantasy league posts. Just rec this one and it will stay at the top for a good while. Most of the keeper leagues seem to be starting up now, so if anyone needs new owners, just start a new post for it, and people can reply to your individual thread for it. [much like how we vote for individual players in the community list]
I'll post the first reply as an example. owners can feel free to rec it if they feel it is a good league. or rec the individuals looking to become new owners if you have played with them before/currently and they are active players.

The Super Sickels League is seeking 3 new players. The league was created by and for John Sickels' readers.
Created by Dewey Finn, who has stepped down as LM this year due to time constraints. I’ll be League manager this year, but will have much help from other long-time owners.
We are a 20-team rotisserie league with 30 mlb and 15 milb players to each team. That means we’ve got 300 minor leaguers, so we are looking for people who really know their minor leaguers. Our plan is to have the three new owners have their own supplemental draft of the three departing teams’ rosters. Then we will make roster cuts at 15 mlb/10 milb, and then draft. The milb pool will consist of players not currently owned, and those who had not signed with an MLB team as January 2010.
The categories are as follows : AVG/OBP/HR/RBI/SB/R and K/W/SV/HLD/ERA/WHIP
we are either sticking to espn, or using fantrax exclusively. we will put it to a vote if a preference is not clear.
We are hoping to start the milb draft around February 1st, so if you are interested please email me at accrules33@hotmail.com.
thanks

to all who have emailed me.
thanks for the interest. I’m going to give it a couple more days and then begin emailing you guys.
the league does sort of require some computer skill. although we are looking at simplifying it, if we need to use the best fantasy scoring site and then a separate site for storing our rosters, then that’s likely what will be done. we also aren’t afraid of time windows for drafting and using texts/phones. so if this level of hardcore sounds like something you’re into, let me know.
i'm gonna start choosing tomorrow afternoon.
for those who want to be in this league ::: last day to email me
Uses
Can we use this to discuss strategies, trades, rosters, and the like, or only for leagues looking for owners?
-1 and only member of the Nick Weglarz fan club!
i was thinking only the latter. mostly so it would be easy to see the individual leagues.
but that is kind of moot now… lol
I have one question though for anyone willing to throw in their 2 cents on my keeper dilemma.
My last keeper spot and I don’t know who to keep.
Mike Stanton
Ian Kinsler
Jay Bruce
Which one would you keep and why?
The categories are the basic 5 plus OBP and Hits.
My other 5 keepers are:
Jason Heyward
Prince Fielder
David Wright
Felix Hernandez
Joe Mauer
by Kenneth Arthur on Jan 19, 2011 12:31 PM EST up reply actions
mmm
i think Heywad, Felix, Mauer are the must keeps.
Wright frightens me a bit with the increasing amount of strikeouts over the last two years. Fielder i don’t think is a lockin, it’s true he’s entering the age which is the typical prime of most atheletes, but i’m not sure he’ll do better than he already is.
I’m not sure how deep your league is or how many hitters you start or how deep the FA pool is, but if you want an answer just based on pure talent for next yr than:
Heyward, Felix, Mauer, Wright, Fielder, Kinsler (if you think he’ll play 140+ games) otherwise Bruce
if you are playing for several years than:
Heyward, Felix, Mauer, Bruce, Stanton, Wright
The team is 12 deep, I have the 2nd pick of the draft. So in a way, I could potentially keep 6 and if I really loved Stanton and Kinsler, I could probably have them both.
12 teams x 6 keepers mean usually only a few really great players sneak through. Been in the league for about 10 years, so we’re thinking long term.
Fielder and Wright are a little dangerous, but at the same time, too valuable to just let go. I think Fielder could still go off this year as he enters free agency.
by Kenneth Arthur on Jan 19, 2011 2:25 PM EST up reply actions
i mancrush too hard on stanton right now to give an unbiased answer.
the obvious answer would be Kinsler, if you think he’ll be healthy
I'm also crushing on Stanton and can't get used to the idea of letting a guy go who could smash 40 HR next year, no matter how much he k's or what position he plays.
But now I’m leaning towards Kinsler because everyone is suggesting it. I have a good chance of landing both but I need to see who else will be available at the 2nd pick.

Any chance he gets a shot in CF at some point?
Right now they have Coghlan in CF, but considering he wasn’t even average in LF he will probably be terrible in center, and they have underwhelming Wes Helms playing 3B. Morrison wont be in CF any time soon, and if Coglan sucks too hard or Helms needs Coghlan to take over than maybe Stanton gets occasional CF time? If he does then his value skyrockets in leagues where OF is split. A longshot, but I’d rather have Stanton in CF than Cousins, Bonifacio, or Coghlan.
I would have to go Kinsler
It’s too unlikely you get a decent 2B anywhere else, with 6 keepers. Guys like Rickie Weeks are probably being kept.
Although, if you have the 2nd pick in the draft and know which 2B’s may be dropped then you may be able to afford to choose someone else, but I’d take Kinsler over Stanton or Bruce anyway at this point.
Depends on
roster formats.
If you don’t have a MI position, and play with 5 OF slots, then someone like Stanton might make more sense.
But really, its probably Kinsler.
As you have the 2nd pick, good chance you could still get Stanton, or someone you like more who passes through.
Right choice is Kinsler, health concerns or not.

I just traded away Edinson Volquez to get John Lamb & Randall Delgado (Keeper League).
Part of me thinks I got great value, but then at the same time, I feel I gave up a stud pitcher.
What do you guys think?
Dewey and KBR are just.......too........sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!!!
The Wolfpac is looking for new soldiers! Change your logo to the black and red!!!
FWIW
Part of my reasoning behind the trade was to clear a roster spot to protect one of either Anibal Sanchez, James Shields, or Jorge De La Rosa, with the two prospects (Lamb and Delgado) stashed away on my minor league roster. So basically, it was Volquez for Lamb, Delgado, and one of Anibal, Shields, JDLR. Still probably seems I sold low perhaps, but I’m just worried about the consistently high era/whip and bad control despite the sexy Ks for Volquez. Then I factored in the PED suspension, and him possibly losing a rotation spot if he struggles early in the season since the Reds have a surplus of starters (6 – Arroyo, Cueto, Volquez, Bailey, Wood, Leake). I guess I’ll have to see how it plays out and hope that Lamb and Delgado continue their promising development.
Dewey and KBR are just.......too........sweeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!!!!

I think you did just fine
and your reasoning makes perfect sense to me. Unless your league doesn’t use WHIP where the walks don’t factor in or it gives extra points for K’s, you won’t miss Volquez at all.
http://bullpenbanter.com
I like the deal fro you Dewey.
But I am very high on Delgado, and Lamb is nice too.
Volquez is electric, but the command is so spotty [as it was prior to TJ]. I would have taken Anibal over him as well, fwiw…
thanks
I was kinda torn on Anibal and JDLR to be honest.

He's been reasonably consistent since 2008...
FIP Values:
2008: 4.06
2009: 3.91
2010: 4.30
BABIP against values have all been reasonable (.300 +/- .020), and K/9 values varied from 8.36 to 9.39, so there’s no reason to think he won’t be a solid pitcher again in 2011. I’m not sure he was a stud to begin with in 2010 but I don’t think any less of him going into 2011.
JDLR's xFIP Values
2008: 4.06
2009: 3.76
2010: 3.77
Good arsenal of pitches (93.4 FB), a changeup that falls off the table, and a hard biting slider. The obvious concern is the walks. Good GB rate too.

Its not a bad deal
But no way would I take Sanchez over Volquez, even with the walks. That said, I would definitely take Jorge de la Rosa over both of them. Clearing a spot for him was good, and getting a great prospect like Delgado back sets you up for the next year, and 3 years or more down the road too.

With the 2nd pick in the re-draft
You guys go with Taillon?
Hanley offer
Standard 5×5 h2h, no salaries, 16 teams, 9 offensive starters (8 positions and DH). My team finished last in almost every offensive category overall, but I have good pitching and a good minor league system. Only one SS slot, but I have Hanley (my only true stud) w/ Starlin Castro riding the bench. I have glaring holes at 3b, LF, RF. Another manager offered me:
Mark Reynolds, JA Happ, Dayan Viciedo, Austin Jackson (who’d be blocked on my squad by McCutchen), and the 10th pick in the FYPD draft for Hanley. I countered with Reynolds, Happ, Viciedo, Wil Myers, and the #10, which he balked at. I was somewhat concerned I wasn’t getting enough value even on my counter…do you do either of these trades? Or is this not enough value?
No
No way I go with that. You need to get Reynolds, a stud OF, and a top prospect. Or keep the best player in fantasy.
what would you say
to another owner’s offer of Pablo Sandoval, Domonic Brown, JP Arencibia, Nick Masset, and the #11 pick in the FYPD?
by PrincetonCubs on Jan 24, 2011 10:42 PM EST up reply actions
I still wouldn't do it...
I’d want a top-3 3B back in a deal for Hanley, or a top-5 RF or LF and a top-prospect…in other words, I doubt I’d deal him at all. What about dealing Castro?
My 4 keepers
Standard 5×5 12 team roto league. I get to keep 4 players. For every player I don’t keep I get a draft pick. My best players: Mauer, McCutchen,Adrian Beltre, Crawford, Adam Wainright, Konerko, Youkilis, and Tommy Hanson,
I’m definitely going to keep Joe Mauer and Carl Crawford. I’m probably also going to keep Youk (he’s reliable, and he’ll probably hit 5/6th in that loaded BoSox lineup and I don’t see Beltre repeating). So I have Mauer, Crawford and Youk. Do I keep Wainright or McCutchen? Or use that extra draft pick to get another hitter and pick pitching a bit later?
Who would you protect?
James Shields
Jorge De La Rosa
Anibal Sanchez

New Dynasty League - Need 5 Owners
Very deep dynasty league that needs 5 owners to begin draft. Total number of owners is 20. League fees are two hundred ten dollars yearly. Deep minor league rosters (50), Deep Active (15 offense & 11 pitchers), 14 reserve rosters, 5 annual rookie draft picks at the beginning of each season. Head to Head match-ups with 2 opponents weekly for a total of 19 weeks in regular season. 8 offense scoring categories & 8 pitching scording categories. 2 weighted offensive & pitching categories. 8 team playoff system with 2 week head to head matches. 13 out of 15 owners participate in other similar dynasty leagues. This league is a span of another league therefore it should survive for several years to come with little turnover.
I am the commissioner of this league and currently participate as co-commissioners for 2 other leagues so good experience organizing and managing this type of league.
Interested owners can be added to a similar league for a sneak peak. Final constitution will be e-mailed to any interested owner, please request.
Please input “Dynasty League Interest” in the subject line.

Need 1 Dynasty Owner
One opening in a 24-team dynasty league. The league is H2H (3 match-ups per week) points based with 25 man active rosters and 25 man minor league rosters (that is 600 MLB and 600 MiLB players that are rostered; needless to say, it is a deeeeep league).
I will warn anyone straight off that this league is not for the faint of heart or casual baseball fan. We are entering our second year after a very successful inaugural season. Although our rules were new and we had 24 very diverse owners across the country, we experienced very few bumps in the road during 2010. We lost 4 owners this year, although each and every one expressed regret on leaving, they just don’t have the time to commit to it this year to do it justice; one was a new father, another was going to be a new father, and two others were off to grad school this fall.
Now that I’ve warned you off, this league is a blast. We’ve really got a GREAT set of owners, ALL of whom know their baseball more than your average bear; we really are baseball degenerates. I put this league together as I love baseball, was getting tired of fantasy football, and wanted a REAL challenge with something that is year-around….and in fact, the slowest time of year for this league is during the season. This off-season, we tweaked the governing rules a bit (with the help of our 4 man Board of Directors) and are getting ready to hold our first Rule V draft. In February, we are having our Minor League and Amateur Drafts, followed by Free Agency in March. By the time we get done, it will spring training. This league really makes the winter really fly by.
Right now, entry fees are $75, with $25 of that being a deposit for the next season and $50 in annual fees. Because you would be a second owner, your entry fee would be $50 this year as the deposit carries over from the previous owner….next year, it would bump up to $75/year. We all play this for the entertainment value, but also want to make it so folks have something invested in the future so they don’t tank it as soon as they go on a losing streak.
If you think you’ve got what it takes and are ready to wade into the deep water, shoot me an email at shadowleaguebaseball@gmail.com and we can go from there.
Looking For A Contract League
I have never participated in a contract league before but I have many years of fantasy baseball experience. I have participated in 20 team Dynasty leagues with 40 man MiLB league rosters as well. Let me know if anyone has any contract leagues available.

1 Opening in a 25 Major + 25 Minor Full Keeper League
Hi all,
Defectors Fantasy Baseball has been around since 1999. Currently we are a 20-team full keeper daily H2H point league, with each team fielding a 25-man majors roster (via Yahoo) and up to a 25-man minors roster that we house on our own site. Here is our rule book (you can navigate the rest of the site from there if you wish): http://www.defectorsfantasysports.com/?page_id=62
We are currently looking for 1 new dedicated member, specifically someone who has the time/desire to build their roster from near scratch over the first few however many years. (For reference, I haven’t missed the playoffs since my 2nd year and almost won the league in year 3.)
Each new manager selects 3 pitchers and 3 hitters from the outgoing manager’s majors roster and up to 10 players from their minors list. They also will select 1st in all 10 rounds of our league’s draft (to be conducted some time around late Feb/early March), though trading of draft picks is commonplace. Here is the roster you would be initially choosing from: http://www.defectorsfantasysports.com/f … .php?id=34
If interested, you can email me at dadevil316 @ gmail . com. I’d be happy to explain anything that our rule book does not clarify fully.

Gauging Interest
On a sort of Sim/Dynasty hybrid. I’ve run a successful dynasty contract league (that is way, WAY too complicated to explain in one sentence) for a few years now, and we’re considering a new offshoot with one catch: 30 teams, starting with Sim rosters (i.e. everyone gets an MLB team, all of their players, and an agreed upon number of their minor leaguers as well).
Any interest there? A couple of owners with me are thinking about it, figured it was worth asking you guys as well. If not, no biggie.

I’m setting up a 12 team 5×5 ESPN Auction Dynasty roto league.
We’re going with a 23 man roster (plus bench), $260 budget, fairly typical league with inflation and contracts – constitution upon request.

The minor league system will be 10 rounds.

Using MiLB'ers in Fantasy
Veteran fantasy ball player here, but have never been in a league that has made use of minor leaguers, in any shape or fashion. We’re looking to expand in that direction, and polling here to see how people use them in their leagues.
Do you count their MiLB stats during the year, or use them as a keeper / feeder pool for your future MLB roster?
Am leaning towards their being a keeper/feeder pool for your active MLB roster, maybe having something like being able to keep them on your roster for up to 3 years after they make the majors, +1 year for every year that you had them rostered in the minors.
So if you drafted Josh Sale, say, and it took 2 more years for him to make the majors, then you could keep him for up to 5 years in the majors.
That may be too much, maybe you get to keep them for 2 years + 1 / year rostered as MiLB.
What do people think?
"Ryan Church is not a star, but I wouldn’t trade minor-league shortstop David Church for Francoeur either and he’s a player I just made up."
-Dan Szymborski, Baseball Think Factory
I’ve never seen a league where minor league stats counted (though I suppose one might exist). That would likely require a lot of extra work on your league’s part, since I don’t think any of the fantasy services incorporate minor league stats. And then there would be the difficulty of how to count stats at various levels.
All the leagues I’ve been use minor leaguers as a feeder pool for the majors.
How you handle the minors will need to be fairly league specific. For instance, if you are using contracts in your league, the way you implement minor leaguers may be very different that if you just get 5-10 keepers a year, no money involved.
Thanks
How would you use money?
A certain budget for keeping MiLBers that you “developed”, and you can keep, say, any 3 under that budget with the cost determined by some independent 3rd party auction value list? Something like that? And after 3 years, they go back in the pot for the draft?
