Suggestions and Schedule

I've got a Prospect Smackdown suggested by a reader (Turner vs. Miller), a look at my favorite 2010 high school pitching prospects, rookie ball sleepers, and more Double-A Transition Monitors on the docket. Make some more suggestions.

Agreed

That’d be an interesting one.

Davidson has overcome Borchering as the better prospect IMO.

I know that he hasn't played yet...

but I think a Rudy Owens vs. Stetson Allie comp would be a cool thing to do, do you go with the polished command guy or the flamethrower with high potential?

by smoked on Sep 9, 2010 11:32 PM EDT reply actions

yeah

Yeah, gotta go Allie due to his upside

by John Sickels on Sep 10, 2010 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions

It's tough

I think Owens is the better prospect right now; his big, durable lefthandedness, proven performance, and excellent command make him a very safe bet to have a multiple season major league career of some kind. I think his ceiling may be underrated as well.

Allie has great stuff and unquestionably higher upside, and he could easily be a better prospect than Owens a year or two from now, but as a pitcher just out of high school with no professional track record, his floor is quite low.

I’d probably pick Owens just because of the attrition rate on young flamethrowers, but I can see going the other way as well.

Maybe a Drabek/Stewart revisit

Both have made large progression this year, Drabek has sharpened both his curve and fastball to ++, Stewart has had his mechanics modded and has had a dominating 2nd half. Are you still higher on Stewart, and would you rank either higher now than before.

This would be great.

Crystal Ball: Jenrry Mejia

I know CBs have been a bit misunderstood recently, but I would love to know what you think of this young stud and how the Mets handling of him will effect his future.

Something about Danny Valencia.

Glad to see you like the Miller vs Turner idea. I hope to see Tyrell Jenkins in your favorite high school pitching prospects.

Organization Retrospect

Maybe a look back at some of the better organization top 20 lists of the past decade and see what went right and what went wrong, such as the 2005 Angels, 2004 Brewers, 2004-2005 Dodgers, 2003 Indians, 2002 Cubs, and 2001 White Sox.

AA transition monitor

I’d love your thoughts on a heard of guys with really mixed results in a really weird park in San Antonio. What do you make of any of Simon Castro, James Darnell, Logan Forsythe and a guy I think is flying way under the radar, Blake Tekotte.

Yeah, I got tekotte on the list for the next one. Don’t want to over-Padre people though lol

I remember something one of the Braves minor league pitching rotations or staff or something

How about the same thing for Northwest Arkansas?

I'm trying a blog. It's about the Royals of course but more of a mechanical analysis type thing about players I see. Try it and let me know what you think! Scouting the Royals

EQ/IQ

Maybe a list of some prospects with the highest levels of mental tools.

For instance, a Ross Ohlendorf type who by all accounts is extremely intelligent and concerned about the world. He did an internship at the Dept of Agriculture after the 2009 season.

Or more of an EQ approach, prospects who seem to have a good understanding of interpersonal relationships and emotion.

Probably under the 'Rookie Ball' thread

but I’d like to hear your take on Billy Hamilton’s year/prospect status. I think you more than most prospect guys thought he was due for a breakout and I would think lived up to your expectations. Would like to hear positives/negatives on his year (and your thoughts on him moving forward). Thanks.

Crystal Ball - Neftali Feliz

Reliever? Starter? Hybrid?

Would like to see how you think his career will pan out.

non-Top 20 list review

You did a review of your top 20 lists, but how about the players that were not on one of your top 20 lists. I don’t want this to turn into a monster project, rather just a review of the obvious obvious candidates and maybe why they were not on a top 20 list.

by Jeff in Minny on Sep 10, 2010 2:33 PM EDT reply actions

Clarification

My meaning is players that were not on a top 20 list, but would be now. Again, keep it to a managable number, not every player joining a top 20 list. Also, not 2010 draftees.

by Jeff in Minny on Sep 10, 2010 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

how about prospects in trades

review of traded prospects that made it the last 5+ years? although you did something like that throughout the blog, I believe…

Any chance you could throw Wheeler into the Smackdown?

I know you usually just do 2 guys in those but those 3 really couldn’t be more similar prospects – same draft class, tall righties, same level of competition this year.

AFL Preview

Obviously a lot will change between now and then, but maybe some of your picks to have big seasons and guys you think will shut it down pretty early (a la Heyward and Stanton of last year).

Braves pitching outlook

How do you think it is going to or should shake out between Hanson, Minor, Jurrjens, Teheran, Delgado, Vizcaino, Beachy, Hoover, Medlen? Do you think the Braves are going to be prepared to trade some of them now when their values are pretty high, or stick a bunch of 3rd/4th starter-type pitchers in the bullpen? They’ve got Kimbrel already in the plans for a late innings role. Maybe some will bust I guess, but that doesn’t look likely really.

by auclairkeithbc on Sep 11, 2010 11:38 AM EDT reply actions

It doesn’t really fit one of your regular articles I guess, but it could be interesting.

Discussions

Late bloomers, a term I’m not that fond of, or how about evolvers? Not just here, but on all baseball discussion forums, conclusions are drawn based on minor league performance. MLEs are wielded like weapons. Yet some players just don’t perform in the majors, some maintain a relatively similar output and yet others actually do better in the majors. You mentioned in passing that Martin Prado could have a profile of the last type of guy. If a player is lacking average, walk rate or power, what do you think makes them better in the majors – coaching, opportunity or whatever? Any further thoughts on recognizing them?

Out of nowhere guys. What do you think of guys like Brandon Kintzer?

Improved Stock

Players who improved their stocks the most since the 2010 amateur draft. It probably requires a lot of stat analysis, but would be something interesting that I haven’t seen elsewhere.
