Labor Day AQA
Here is an All Questions Answered Thread for Labor Day.
As always, ONE question per poster. Please do not have questions that are actually multiple questions designed to look like a single one. This is a rapid fire format and something that will take me too long to research isn't likely to get answered in any detail. Depending on how many questions we get, it could take a few days to answer everything, and I'll cut off the questions when it gets to be too much.
NO MORE QUESTIONS PLEASE. Got over 100 to work with here.

Ji-Man Choi
Have you heard any reports on Mariners 1B/C Ji-Man Choi? Thanks in advance
choi
What I’ve heard is that he’s a skilled contact hitter with more athletiicsm than usual for a 1B/C type. Home run power is not developed right now but may come in time. If he’s more of a catcher than a 1B he could be a very nice prospect indeed; he has more time at 1B this year but his catching stats aren’t bad. Waiting on scouting reports.
Miguel Sano
How high might be rank amongst all prospects now that his full season debut is nearly in the books? Heart of hearts, what’s his career look like?
Thanks, John. Happy Labor Day.
sano
He’s got contact/plate discipline issues, and this defense at third base is pretty dreadful. But overall, considering how young he is, he did quite well this year. He has some things to iron out but I still think he can be a Miguel Cabrera type hitter.
How much emphasis do you place on body type when projecting players out? Specifically, defensive placement/value?
Guys like Decker, Flores, Myers, Moustakas, Lawrie, etc are the kind of guys I’m thinking of. Young players who the community seem split on in terms of whether they have the skill set to put up positive defensive value primarily based on their body type (or so it seems).
Hopefully that doesn’t come off as multiple questions. Thanks.
Chun Chen
What do you make of him as a catching prospect? His lines of .312/.368/.518 at A (240 PA) and .318/.440/.530 at high A (191 PA) really pop out of you… especially considering he’s a catcher.
chen
I like the bat, very intriguing. Defense, he has some work to do…he’ s not bad at getting runners, but he coughs up quite a few passed balls. Perhaps that will improve in time, but if his reliability doesn’t improve he may face a position switch, lowering his value.
Andrew Brackman
Much has been written about re: Manny Banuelos and Dellin Betances, but what have you heard from scouts re: his stuff and what have you personally saw in his numbers this year that leads you to believe he is on his way to realizing his potential as a top-of-the-rotation starter, if so?
brackman
I haven’t heard anything for a couple of months. What I heard earlier in the year was that he’d come a long way with his fastball this year, both his command and improved consisntency with the velocity. Breaking ball and changeup were both showing improvement early. I will have to tap sources to find out what was going on after he moved up to Double-A. Numbers wise his control took a hit, but he remained effective, and overall his stock is higher than it was a year ago at this time
New York Mets
How many of their prospects (Mejia, Gee, Duda, etc.) starting next season on their opening day roster?
no idea
No idea. Predicting that the Mets will do with their major league roster is a fool’s errand this far out. Would anyone have thought they would open 2010 with Mejia in middle relief, for example?
Diamond in the Rough?
Any thoughts on the “other” Braves undrafted pitching FA from 2007 in terms of ceiling?
Thanks!
diamond
his fastball is pretty average from what i’ve heard, but the breaking ball and changeup are effective, he throws strikes, and he picks up grounders. His K/IP declined in Triple-A but he otherwise did well. I’d say fourth starter.
2011 break-out candidates
With the 2010 minor league season just about done, who are some prospects off the top of your head that you think are poised to break-out in 2011? I guess I’ll define “break-out” as prospects that seem to have really high ceilings, but haven’t had great results in the minors as of yet.
mitchell
He was on my pre-season sleeper list.
I like the grounders, although his other ratios deteriorated this year in Double-A/Triple-A. Good breaking ball by report, changeup still work in progress, command sometimes sharp sometimes not. I’d rate him a possible back-end starter but more probably a future reliever.
Anthony Capra
Anthony Capra has put up a decent year with a 4.41 ERA and 118 K’s in 130.2 innings. He’s also walked an astounding 89 guys. Does Capra have the stuff to make it in the bigs if he can cut down on the walks, and what do you think his ceiling is?
Thanks, John.
A's Fan in Sweden
capra
Very good curveball and changeup, fastball at 92-93 on his best days but usually more 87-89. if he can improve his command, he’s got enough to get by in the majors. But he’s got to get the walks down. Ceiling, fourth starter, maybe a third if the velocity peaks more often.

Andrew Cashner
Andrew Cashner’s stock has fallen this season. Any chance the Cubs will make him a starter by 2012?
Zach Putnam
He’s been starting and relieving this year—mostly relieving. Do you see him as a back-end starter? Or do you think he’s going to end up in the bullpen? In what role? Do he have closer stuff, or would he be more of a 7th inning guy? Thanks.
putnam
I think he’s more of a long/middle reliever, albeit a good one. He could be a fourth or fifth starter for some teams, but my guess is that he spends most of his career in the pen.
Jesus Montero
Are the Yankees going to give Montero a starting job next year or will they bring him along more slowly?
Wait, are we talking about the beginning of the season?
Because I think later in the year he will eventually be called up and start, just not the beginning of the season
He's no Lars
Obviously the Yankees don’t think it helps them to call Montero up this September. Obviously the Red Sox see reasons why they should bring Lars up. Wonder if Montero will be traded this offseason?
"he's no Lars"
Thank god. Lars isn’t close to the prospect Montero is.
The Red Sox have an old Mike Lowell with a .660 OPS at 1b. Of course they can give Lars a shot. The Yankees have one of the best hitting catchers in baseball. Why would they call up Montero to sit on the bench?
I would like to see it
They should look at how they brought Jorge along, and have them slit time between catcher and dh.

Minor League hitters in August
With minor league pitchers universally exceeding total innings that they have ever pitched by early August, do hitters dominate in August? Players like James Darnell and Hank Conger had very good Augusts. It got me thinking about whether this was growth or just pitchers getting tired.

eh
Eh….I dunno. There are so many possible factors that go into it. It could be one element, but I don’t think it is something that can be proved empirically.
Chad Bettis
Do you think he has a better chance of becoming a mid rotation starter or an All Star closer? Based on him starting so far, he has been dominant, but he was a dominant closer in college. Where do you expect he winds up? Thanks John!
bettis
We should know when we see what they do with him next year. I could see it either way. Sorry I can’t be more specific.
Cubs SP prospects
Of the Cubs SP prospects, which do you think is the first to contribute as a starter for the major league club. The pool includes Chris Archer, Trey McNutt, Chris Carpenter, Andrew Cashner, Jay Jackson, Jeff Samardzija (not a prospect, but a AAA dweller), Rafael Dolis & Hayden Simpson, among others.
First indeed, not necessarily best.
Like filling next year’s 5th starter role.
I'm not convinced that
1. The Cubs are still pursuing Cashner as a starter.
2. The Cubs have the discipline to keep him in the minors to develop instead of using him as a bullpen piece for mediocre major league teams.
I’m rooting for him, but judging from his results so far, he is far away from a ML starter.
ok
Ok, I get the question.
Logically you’d look to Carpenter or Jackson, with Archer or McNutt an outside shot and better candidate for late in the year. I have no idea what they will do with Cashner.
Luis Heredia
What should Pirate fans expect of him? and When should we expect him?
heredia
Well let’s see….92-93, good secondary pitches for his age, more velocity possible as he matures, best Mexican pitcher to come around in at least a decade, and 16 years old.
What should you expect? I have no idea. He’s 16, and if the Michael Ynoa situation teaches anything, is that ANYTHING can happen with a guy like this. He could turn into a number one starter. He could turn into a number five or a reliever. There’s a significant chance he’ll get hurt and turn into nothing at all.
Even in a best case I wouldn’t expect him in the majors for 3-4 years.
Rudy Owens
Hi John,
Thanks for the thread. Should expectations for Rudy Owens be adjusted in light of his outstanding 2010 in AA? Regular reports have him hitting 94 with the FB, and his control looks excellent. What I’m getting at is, is he looking like more than the potential #3/#4 he was seen as coming into 2009?
http://rswanzey.blogspot.com
stats
2.46 ERA, 7.4 H/9, 0.7 HR/9, 1.4 BB/9, 7.9 K/9 (5.74 K/BB) – 22 YO in AA – 150 total innings. I like it a lot, and it’s not even like it’s out of line with the rest of his minor league career. He’s just nasty against more advanced hitters now.
http://rswanzey.blogspot.com
owens
Yeah, if those velocity reports are accurate (and I will know if they are by the time I do the Pirates for the book), Owens is a very very good prospect who deserves much more attention thatn he’s received.
As a Bucs fan, I have followed Owens really closely this year
I don’t think he tops out at 94 very frequently. From what I’ve heard, he is consistently 90-92, which is still decent, and he has terrific command. Also, it’s gonna be hard to analyze his velo because Altoona’s radar gun is said to be a couple of mph fast. It’s hard to know which scouting reports account for that alleged difference and which ones don’t.
In any event, his #s these last two years have me convinced that he’s gonna be a solid starter in the majors and by solid, I mean FIP under 4.

I have an average stuff report from last year, but that’s old data. I don’t have anything current but given his performance I will find out.

What kind of grade would you give him now and do you think he can stick in the majors as a #3?

wood
We’ll he’s proven he can pitch well in the majors, and yes I think he can stick. I’d give him a Grade B, a guy who is a solid major league player.
Mous
Are Moustakas’ lack of walks concerning to you, or is his amazing contact ability and low strikeout rate reason enough to not be concerned?
mous
The combination of the power outburst with the very low strikeout rate is a huge positive. I’m not worried about walks for him right now.
Alex Gordon
Continues to struggle at the plate with an OPS under .700. What do you see from him next year?
He really needs to break out...
….and what about Clint Robinson? Ever have a chance? (I missed your deadline so I’m piggybacking and “cheating”)
I'm trying a blog. It's about the Royals of course but more of a mechanical analysis type thing about players I see. Try it and let me know what you think! Scouting the Royals
Keep in mind the sample size
less than 200 PA and the Royals’ handling of him this year has once again been less than stellar.
alex
I think he’s mentally dragged down in KC now. He desperately needs a change of scenery, and I doubt he’ll ever thrive in KC.
With a new team and a fresh start he can still be a good player.
Who would you have as the Giants #1 prospect
Belt or Wheeler (or other)
Buster Posey>

toughie
That’s tough. I believe Belt is legit, but I also like Wheeler a lot. I’ll have to figure that out when I do the Giants list. Right now I’ll punt on that one.
Nick Franklin or Grant Green?
Who do you project to be the better offensive SS? Why?…Thanks for the Q&A…love them
franklin
I’d probably take Franklin at this point. They both have some warts on their approach, but Franklin is younger.
You mean Jean Segura, presumably.
IMHO, he looks like a potential stud. Sort of like a 2.0 version of Howie Kendrick, but with improved power and speed.
Pretty much everything I’ve read recently has been positive except for:
Klaw (1:15 PM)
I wrote about Segura in March, I think – quick bat, short to the ball, can run a little (not a burner), but shaky at 2b now and not very selective at the plate. Definitely a prospect, top 10 in that system, but I see a lot of work ahead of him, things that are not a guarantee to improve with age and experience.
http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/34116
I think he looks like a guy to keep an eye on definitely.
Thoughts on...
Reese Havens?
Thanks John.

I like him. I don’t like his injuries.
If he can stay healthy he can be a very good player ,middle infielder with pop, good OBP, etc.
Gast
What are you thoughts on John Gast? He is showing some pretty good ability in Low-A Batavia. Do the Cardinals actually have something in him?
Thanks for the great site John.
Baseball makes the world go 'round, or at least in my world it does.
gast
Looks good so far, but college guys are expected to do well in the NY-P League. We need to see him at higher levels, but he looks like a C+ prospect currently.
Great question
I’m wondering about this as well, especially from an offensive standpoint

Cuban SS
To be honest, I have serious doubts about both of them as hitters and I don’t particularly like either one of them as offensive players right now. I suspect Iglesias may be a better hitter in the long run but I can’t prove it.
Mark Trumbo
Does him OPS’ing over 1000 over his last 300 abs or so in AAA by improving his walk rate more so than his power give you reason to believe he could wind up being a useful player for the Angels?
trumbo
He has very little defensive value. Hard to see how he fits into the lineup long term for the Angels.
I do see him as a guy who could have a really nice year at age 27 or 28, but he’ll need a confluence of luck and performance to get a job.
Rubby De La Rosa
What are your thoughts on him, and what would be your plan for him next season?
Thanks for doing these. Its great to see your opinions on all these prospects
by SeanMillerSavior on Sep 6, 2010 2:51 PM EDT reply actions
rubby
Scouting reports on his stuff are very positive. Ratios slipped after he moved up to Double-A, but that is to be expected given that he skipped high-A, and he’s still getting tons of grounders and few hits. If it was me, I’d return him to Double-A to begin 2011, then if he pitches well move him up to Triple-A at mid-season.
I like what he’s done this year and always like it when guys like this come out of nowhere.
Dustin Ackley
Ackley reminds me a bit of a prospect once heavily lauded by Peter Gammons: Brent Gates. He has the look of a baller but doesn’t seem to be able to do any one thing particularly well. Is he doing enough to justify his 2nd overall pick or is it too early to tell?
by Buck Martinez's Wig on Sep 6, 2010 2:55 PM EDT reply actions
ackley
It is too early to tell for sure what kind of player Ackley will develop into, but I’m quite confident he’ll be better than Brent Gates. He’s a much better athlete for one thing than Gates was.

I’m a bit better today, but still feel kind of weird all over. Muscle aches, etc.
I’m not too vulnerable to allergies. I don’t know what this is.
mental tools
what prospect is known for having the best mental tools. for instance, a guy that really just seems to have it together. someone who seems like he knows what he’s doing, what life is all about, and someone you would go to for advice if you felt like you were off track.
makeup
I think you’re talking about makeup.
Who has the best makeup in the minors? Probably someone who we’ve never heard of, some mediocre A-ball player who will end up as a coach and manager eventually.
Of the ones we HAVE heard of, I really don’t know. Most guys near the tops of the prospect lists have good makeup these days.
Jason Heyward has exceptional makeup by all accounts.
Logan Morrison
How close is Logan Morrison’s current MLB line representative of what you think we could expect from him next year? I’m sure we shouldn’t expect all these triples, but does everything else seem about right? I’m sure the Marlins wish they had brought him up a bit earlier!
morrison
I don’t think this is far off. I think we will see perhaps a somewhat lower batting average but more homers and power in the long run.

Dye'd
What players do you think could be Jermaine Dye’d next year? Meaning, what player(s) could still possibly play but will be priced out of the market due to cheaper in house alternatives?
For example, if I remember correctly, in a recent chat, Dave Cameron made a quick argument that we could be seeing the last of Man-Ram.
dyed
Manny maybe. I’ll be honest here, once guys get to the majors and get established I kind of stop paying attention to things like salaries and stuf.f.
Kyle Greenwalt
What are your thoughts on Astros prospect Kyle Greenwalt? BA recently said he’s a guy to watch for on Peoria Javelinas AFL roster.
greenwalt
Well his numbers are pretty ugly this year, but it was lancaster and the cal league. He can hit the low 90s and has a decent curve, and yeah, there is some sleeper potential here. He could do better next year at Corpus Christi.
Nick Franklin
He just got promoted from A to AA. Thoughts on his promotion? Too aggressive to skip A+?
Heard prior
Interview on the radio when he was pitching in Fullerton. He said his velo was kind of erratic, 89-93. He said he was just looking for consistancy in velo and his stuff. He was just staring to go multiple innings/back to back days, and stuff wasn’t consistant from outing to outing.

I really like the command he has shown this year, and I’m not worried about the 5.00+ ERA in the Cal League. He still needs to mature physically and get the fastball velocity consitently stronger, but he’s coming along and I think he’s a breakthrough candidate for 2011. He could be a number three guy I think.

allen
mmmm……how about a firm maybe?
He looked good the two times I saw him this year. There’s some risk he may get Quadruple-A’d, and he’s not going to be a great batting average guy, but the walks and power should prove useful to someone eventually. Will that be AZ in 2011? Maybe…the chance increases if he’s hot in september.

Zack Cox (Stl -3B)
John,
I’m worried about the power potential of the 6’0 ft 215 lb Zack Cox. If he maxes out his potential, who would be a good major league comparison? Thanks
cox
Well if he develops properly, he can be a .300 hitter with 15-20 homers per season and a strong OBP in my view. I don’t see him developing gigantic homer power, but he should at least hit double digits I think.
Brandon Allen and Chris Carter (A's version)
Personally, I find them comparable for a number of reasons (especially when Carter was still a 1B only). How close are they for you and who would you prefer?
allen vs carter
In terms of just power, they are very very close…although Carter might have just a hair more. I think his bat is a bit faster and, although he didn’t do it this year, I think he has a chance to hit for a higher average in the long run. I like Carter a bit more.
Both former White Sox prospects...
They could really use one or both of those next year if Konerko leaves. Oh well, at least it fetched them Tony Pena and Swish the Great.
Jordan Zimmerman or Mike Minor?
Who would you rather have on your staff next year?

If you are talking fantasy, I think Minor since his team is better. If you are talkign real life, I think I’d go with Zimm.

Man, walker has been great this year. I had given up hope for him, and even now his BB/K is still pretty weak, but the hot streak is now over 300 at-bats and the longer it goes, the more likely it is that he’s for real. He’ still just 24 (25 later this month) and sometimes it just takes a little longer for some people.
Crawford and Adrianza
What happens with Giants’ SS Crawford and Adrianza next year, will they both be in AA competing for pt, do they stay put in AA and High A respectively, or do they both move up one level? Both had subpar seasons at best.

Chris Owings
What happpened to D´backs SS Chris Owings who has been out since late June and what do you think of him going forward ?
owings
He’s been out with a foot injury.
He’s young and has a good glove, but he’s got serious issues with the strike zone, or at least he did earlier this year before he got hurt. He did improve his shortstop defense this year. He’s very young, just turned 19 last month, but the bat has some doubts about it right now.

Does he have any hope of becoming an impact bat at the Major League level? I was disillusioned with his injuries and lack of success in Sacramento and am considering dropping him from my keeper team.

I think Chapman is more likely to end up as a starter. I haven’t checked Rangers buzz lately so I’m not sure what they are planning for next year with Neftali.
Who would be more effective? Well….Feliz has awesome stuff, but Chapman’s is even better. If he can harness it, he will be…a Cuban Randy Johnson?
what are your thoughts on Leslie Anderson
he has been everything and more statistically for the Rays moving through the system and seemingly getting better at every level. He is a legit prospect (top 50) despite his age?
anderson
No way he’s in the top 50, not at age 28.
He’s interesting and could be/should be a productive hitter, but I see him as more of a complementary player than a star.
Liam Hendriks VS Adrian Salcedo
who do you prefer going forward?
Salcedo may have a higher ceiling, but Hendriks production can’t be ignored…

Felix Sterling
17 yr old with AZL Indians. I can’t find anything about him and I like in Florida so it would be a long haul out to AZ. As a former Clevelander, I am interested in this guy. Please let me you have some idea about stuff with this guy.
sterling
Is that a great name for a pitcher or what?
he’s 17 and he throws very hard; I don’t know anything else about him off the top of my head, other than the numbers, which are very good except for some spotty control, normal for his age.
sterling
Anyone out there have any reports on exactly how hard this dude throws?
From Tribe Insider Tony Lastoria
Sterling is one of many good arms the Indians have out in the AZL. He is a big, strong, physical pitcher who at 17 already has a fastball at 90-94 MPH with good secondary pitches (slider/changeup). He has a starter’s arsenal, and while his command/control is improving he shows a good feel to pitch. Like most Latin kids he came into the organization as a thrower rather than a pitcher, but unlike most Latin pitchers he had some secondary pitches in place. Has really made a lot of strides during his time out in Arizona. Definitely a guy to highlight and watch.
Kolbrin Vitek
Do you think Vitek (making a switch from 3B) could be a viable CF? Thanks
vitek
He’s been pretty awful at third base. i have no idea if he’d be a viable CF or not. LF or RF, sure. CF, I don’t know.
Federico Hernandez (Hou - C)
What’s his status as a prospect? I’ve always heard he was great defensively, and he’s hit well in 55 AA at-bats.

Better Career
Which 2010 Cubs draftee do you think will have the better career, Hayden Simpson or Reggie Golden?
Matt Rizzotti
Did he do enough this year to solidify his status as a pretty good prospect? Or do you think hes just a one year wonder? He went from pretty bad to tearing the cover off the ball, so do you think this sudden development was real?
rizzoti
He’s been pretty bad since reaching Triple-A, although it was just three weeks of games. I suspect about 60% of this is real progress and about 40% better luck.
Sleeper 2010 Draft Pitchers
Can you rank 2010 draftees Ralston Cash, Josh Spence, John Gast and Matt Thompson?

As always, Thanks John
Does it feel like there is a lack of quality SS prospects right now? I’m looking for more of a off the top of your head feeling rather than a lengthy answer since I understand a in-depth answer would take a lot of time to prepare.
Stats are not a euphemism for tits
SS
Yeah things are fairly thin at shortstop right now. These things are cyclical; it will turn around eventually.
Mychal Givens
What have you heard about him since returning from his injury? His numbers look pretty good and he’s on Frederick’s roster for the Carolina League playoffs.
givens
Statwise it is unwise to judge on 23 games split between four levels, but at least those 23 games have been good, .286/.402/.452. Scouting wise I have not heard anything specific, none of my normal sources have seen him given the roster jumping he’s done. So basically it comes down to “we need to see him play more.” The tools are certainly here.
comps
A big guy with a great arm who pitches brilliantly when on but whose arm may be hanging by a thread and will eventually fall off. Until we get some pro data I won’t go beyond that.
richards
Well I had him as a pre-season breakout guy so I’m glad to see it happen. Top 100 most likely in the bottom half.
hitter strikeouts
John, if you’re looking at a prospect who strikes out a lot without walking a lot, what extenuating circumstances do you want to see to determine if he’s going to make it?
I do mean this generally, but I’m thinking of Nick Franklin, who’s struck out in 21.4 percent of his PAs and walked in 8.7 percent.
As always, thanks.
Those rates
really don’t quite fit the description you gave. i mean he strikes out a little more than you’d like and walks a little less, but those aren’t extreme rates.
by auclairkeithbc on Sep 7, 2010 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions
yea
Yeah, franklin is a bad example of what you are talking about. His walk rate isnt’ terrible.
Extenuating circumstances of the high-strikeout/low-walk player? Few guys with that profile become consistently successful. The ones who do tend to be toolsy, but even in that class the failure rate is high if the BB/K doesn’t improve. If the player in question is very young for his level, that helps some.
Keyvius Sampson
What happened to him? He only pitched twice in August, and not at all after August 14th, but it doesn’t look like he was put on the DL. Is this just a precautionary shutdown due to workload? Is he injured? What gives?
I remember another poster saying he was having TJ surgery.
Shame.

I thought the MRI was negative and they shut him down as a precaution.
Wise, and if he stays healthy I like him a lot.
Adam Warren
What is your take on him and his future?
warren
Great command, lots of grounders, stuff likely better than advertised. Future…grounder-grabbng inning-eating fourth starter if he stays in New York
Jerry Sands
I hear mixed reports regarding his defense – Dodgers seem to think he is a good outfielder, have read reports that have him with good footspeed, good arm, and more than adequate to stick in either corner. Have read other reports saying he is not a good fielder, outfield or first base. What is your take?
sands
What I heard is that he’s average/passable at a corner but nothing special, which sounds kind of in the middle of the Dodgers optimism and your other source pessimism.
Albert Campos (P - Colorado)
Campos pitched this season in the Pioneer League…Have seen him in person multiple times, and he has been one of the league’s most impressive pitchers…What are your thoughts on him and his future?
Quick Update:
Campos named Pioneer League Pitcher of the Year.

campos
If you have seen him multiple times, then you know more about him than I do. What did you see?
Just looking at the numbers, I’m not enamored of his low strikeout rate.
Worked 91-92 into 8th inning with good movement. Strong slider (although a bit inconsistent) and a nice change. Very composed.
Campos is just 19 years old and appears to have room to further grow into his 6’4" frame.
Not saying this is what he will become (obviously), but he reminded me a bit of a young Ubaldo Jimenez.
Spoke to a few scouts/front office personal who were on board with that comparison and were also very impressed with him.
Without looking at his season numbers, I am willing to bet that his K rate improved as the season progressed.
Along with Billy Hamilton and Rafael Ortega, Campos was one of the the better prospects I saw in the Pioneer League this year. Just haven’t heard much about Campos outside of what I’ve seen, but guessing his POY award will garner him some attention.
Campos K By Month:
June: 9 IP, 9 H, 7 K (7 K/9) – 3.00 ERA
July: 31 IP, 32 H, 22 K (6.4 K/9) – 2.61 ERA
August: 35 IP, 29 H, 28 K (7.2 K/9) – 1.29 ERA
September: 7 IP, 4 H, 6 K (7.71 K/9) – 0.00 ERA

Where does he rank in a weak Dbacks system? thoughts on him…
mateo
Dominican Summer League statistics are not very predictive. Scouting reports point to good tools esp. speed, but he’s got some swing issues. He’s very young. I don’t know where I’d rank him in the Dbacks system until I start working on the book, but just right now he doesn’t strike me as a top 10 guy
intersting....
I'm trying a blog. It's about the Royals of course but more of a mechanical analysis type thing about players I see. Try it and let me know what you think! Scouting the Royals
politics
I hate clubhouse politics. That is my only comment on that. The egos of managers are exceeded in size only by the egos of baseball players.
Andrew McCutchen or Jose Tabata
Who would you rather have moving forward?
McCutchen
No argument. Tabata is a very good baseball player who can so little things well, like plate discipline, ability to steal a bag, and move the runner up. McCutchen is a special player who creates runs from no where. I was at today’s game where he drew a leadoff walk, stole second, advanced to third on an error, and scored on a Tabata ground out. That was all due to his skill set. Also like his defense and power.
by mattp31 on Sep 6, 2010 7:04 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
I disagree
“I was at today’s game where he drew a leadoff walk,”
Pitcher had crappy control. All McCutchen had to do was keep the bat on his shoulder.
“stole second,”
Catcher had a crappy arm.
“advanced to third on an error,”
Somebody else’s screwup? Still not McCutchen!
“and scored on a Tabata ground out.”
So in other words, McCutchen relied on Tabata to create the run. He mostly just jogged from base to base. Nice.
Still
McCutchen still had discipline to take the walk.
Stole second because of his speed and base running ability. Not everyone in baseball would have made it.
He got to 3rd on someone else’s screwup…but he forced that error on his own.
FYI, I’m not defending McCutchen as a Pirates fan, I’m a Braves fan
by mattp31 on Sep 8, 2010 6:04 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
Not a very fair comp
However, it goes to show how far up Tabata has moved up on everyone’s list with so little fanfare.

Tejeda
He hangs around the majors for 12 years, used as a starting infielder in four of those seasons and as a part-timer in the rest. His end-of-career stats come out almost exaclty at the aggregate league average for his career.
John
Who would you rather have on your favorite major league team for the next six years, Aroldis Chapman or Julio Teheran?

Pedro Alvarez
Will he be able to hit for power and some average, or will he continue striking out 2 times a game
he's Mo Vaughn
if you like that, good for you. However, will he be a top-5 3B? don’t know, honestly. There’s Longo, Zimm, Wright, and Mous coming up (who’s a better all-around hitter, imho). I mean, I like Alvarez, but I don’t know if he’ll ever hit his ceiling.
by apoxonbothyourhouses on Sep 7, 2010 3:12 AM EDT up reply actions
mo was pretty freaking awesome back in the day
Didn’t last very long, of course, but I don’t just like that, I love that.
pedro
He’ll figure it out. Don’t expect batting titles and most years he’ll hit in the .260s but more power and walks will come and the strikeout rate will get better.
Troy Glaus, say?

Something Different?
Do you use the website as a resource at times when you can’t see as much baseball as you would like? I know you are a family man and have had a lot going on since this site opened and I have always wondered A) how much attention you pay attention to the stuff the fans post and B) do you ever use us as a resource when you can’t see the players you wanted to see?
yes
Yes, I do use it as a resource. I would be stupid not to.
My ability to travel has been constrained by personal and family reasons the last couple of years, and there are many leagues and players I don’t get the opportunity to see very often nowadays. My family always comes first and it always will.
more
In the age of video and internet, I’m able to compensate to a great extent for the travel limits, and I have plenty of other sources I consult when needed.
But we have the best community of baseball observers on the entire internet right here, and it would be stupid of me not to tap you guys when I need to.
Makes a lot of sense...
…and I hope to be able to learn enough to be able to add to the discussion and I’ve seen all I need to know to see that your book is a higher priority for me than subscription services when funds improve. Responsiveness goes so far with me, and I love what you’re doing here.

First name that pops into mind...
Who is the best pitching prospect in the A’s system right now?
The monster at the end of this blog.
nobody
nobody pops to mind immediately but I am still feeling sick today and not fully operational. Thats’ another thing that has changed the last couple of years…instant recall of prospects off the top of my head is a fading skill. I’m told this happens when you get past 40 and it sure has.
That's kind of an answer to the question in and of itself...
"We don't want our people to be preoccupied with seminude, crazy men jumping up and down who are chasing an inflated object," said Sheik Mohamed Osman Arus, head of operations for the Hizbul Islam insurgent group.
Ian Krol
That’s the answer.
With 22-year-old Cahill, 22-year-old Anderson, 24-year-old Gio, and 27-year-old Braden, can you really blame them for focusing on offense the past several drafts??

Fabio Martinez-Mesa
What’s the deal with him? He’s on the DL and hasn’t pitched in a while but I can’t find anything on why. Does he have ace potential if he figures out control? Do you think he can figure it out or will walks always be an issue here like a Carlos Marmol?
by mattp31 on Sep 6, 2010 7:09 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
FMM
Yeah, he’s definitely got ace potential if he can dial down the walks a bit and stays healthy.
His injury is a sore shoulder. If he doesnt’ blow the arm out, I am optimistic about his chances to adjust.
Miguel de los Santos
What should I take from his season so far (between Spokane and Hickory)? I’m very encouraged by the 14.33 K/9 and the fact that he’s not very hittable, but am discouraged by the 5.63 BB/9. Now I’ll take the 2.55 K/BB all the time, but I’m worried about the walks as the strikeouts drop as he moves up. Could this just be a wild pitcher dominating people younger than him? (I don’t know what the age averages are in the minor leagues. Is a 22 year old dominating A- and A ball to this extent expected or rare?) Thanks
miguel
He turned 22 in early July, which is not young for the Sally League, but not horrifically old either. I am worried about his command issue hurting him at higher levels, but the K/IP ratio remains excellent. It is not unexpected for a guy with good stuff but spotty control to still dominate at the lower levels in this way. It will be interesting to see how aggressive the Rangers are with him next year.
does anyone else find it funny when people answer questions for John?
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
any answer is better than no answer
yeah sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it comes across very smart-alecky…. but most of the time, i appreciate getting to read various opinions to these questions.
this is Sickels house, no doubt, but i learn a lot from his readers/posters as well as from him.
