Couple of Reds prospects

Chapman: 1.0 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, got Pujols to ground into a double play to end the 8th inning and erase the baserunner (who really shouldn’t have walked to begin with, here’s the ridiculous pitch f/x on Chapman’s four pitch “walk” to Jay)

Yonder Alonso also got his first major league hit, a double flared down the LF line that Matt Holliday knocked into the stands with his leg while trying to make a sliding catch

Will Smith

7 ip, 9 h, 3 r (1 earned), 0 bb, 9 k

8/3 gb/fb

really been outstanding since the trade. that’s a 51/4 k/bb in 54 innings.

He's at an appropriate level now and he should have some great confidence to take away into the offseason.

Will he start at AA next year?

probably

i’m still not really sure how much of a prospect he is, so i can’t wait to see how he handles AA. that kinda control will get noticed though, regardless.

1-2, R, RBI, BB, K Norris was up to an .850 OPS for the year entering the year. Norris will have ample opportunity to build off of a strong second half. Potomac clinched a playoff spot today and he’s going to the AFL.

Harper

I don’t know if this would be fair to the rest of the team but I’d love for Harper to make his debut during the Carolina League Playoffs…

by mwyche on Sep 5, 2010 9:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Not gonna happen.

They want to keep the circus out of Woodbridge. He’s going to instructional league and then there’s an outside chance he’ll go the AFL. Rizzo will be conservative this year, but he may get more aggressive next year. Espinosa’s two promotions seem aggressive for him and suggest that he’ll push guys who are solid prospects so they don’t get bored.

Aaron Sanchez - Blue Jays comp round pick

3 inn , 3BB, 5K, 4/2 GO/FO

Just turned 18 a month ago, on the year he has 13.32 K/9 but also 6.12 BB/9 and sports a 2.75 GO/FO (not including today)

should be a guy to watch closely in the future

When did people really think he (Hicks) wasn't going to be SOMETHING of some use?

At least the LHP half of a platoon or something. An .800 OPS in Low A for a young, toolsy guy like him is fine. Great approach, good defensive skills, and good power/speed potential for the long term. People may have been down on him for a while, but did/does anyone really have him outside of the top 100?

I got to see Nats-Pirates live yesterday.

I don’t know much about Espinosa, but he looks like a guy with serious power. His HR (first of his ML career) was an extremely hard-hit opposite-field liner which cleared the 21-foot high Clemente Wall in right field of PNC Park. Definitely one of the more impressive homers I’ve seen in a while. He had a long two-bagger to boot.

Very jealous of that ballpark.

Espinosa’s certainly starting out hot. His glove has looked good at second so far as well and I understand he and Desmond are putting in a lot of work before games. Back to back starts over Kennedy suggest that he’s going to get a real chance to earn the starting job next year.

With Dezy @ SS & Espy @ 2B, is this the ideal situation?

Or will we eventually see a positional swap.

by Dewey Finn on Sep 4, 2010 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I was under the impression that Espinosa was a good defensive SS?

If so, it would be a bit of a waste to put him at 2B.

http://bullpenbanter.com/

by Jeff Reese on Sep 4, 2010 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I think they like Desmond's cannon of an arm at SS, but it's hard to say.

The good news is that if they reup with Kennedy he’s left handed. You could have Desmond at short, Espinosa at second, and Kennedy spelling Desmond occasionally by playing 2nd against tougher righties with switch hitting Espinosa at short. I’d like to see Espinosa get some games at short in the bigs as well.

Espinosa’s been real smooth at second so far, and I’d like to play Desmond wherever he’s most comfortable. Desmond’s been on fire lately and has his average up to .287. He had another three hit game tonight.

On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.

by souldrummer on Sep 4, 2010 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Desmond

I think Desmond has more range and will eventually fix the errors. Desmond doesn’t have the power for 2B. While I think Espinosa will be able to get his BA and OBP up to go with his already strong power. The two will make a strong up the middle combo for years to come.

by mwyche on Sep 5, 2010 9:47 AM EDT up reply actions

Indeed - it's a fantastic ballfield.

Yeah, he looked extremely smooth at second during the pre-game warmups, as well as the game itself. Is he a natural SS?

Yep.

Real polished as well. Middle of the diamond appears to be an area of growing positional strength for the Nats. Stephen Lombardozzi had an excellent year for Potomac and has been strong in his recent callup for Harrisburg. Scouts aren’t that impressed but he’ll get a shot in the AFL and a full year at Harrisburg next year. Rick Hague from Rice has had a good start for Hagerstown and seems to me like he’d make our Top 20. Some issues with his defense at short, though, and i wonder if he’ll eventually be moved to 2nd.

Third base is generally where prospects go to die in the Nats system.

He’s been playing mostly short for Hagerstown. Maybe he moves to third eventually, though.

Jerry Sands: 1 for 3, HR, BB

by limozeen on Sep 4, 2010 10:17 PM EDT reply actions

2 bbs for sands.

Also, Sands has stablized his K rate in AA. One of the major concerns i had about his promotion was that his K rate was going to sky rocket and thus, flame out and lower my expectations of his major league capabilities.

But, coming into tonight:
Low A K%: 21.2%
AA K%: 21%

I think that’s a pretty decent indicator that he can, and is able to make the necessary adjustments.

Plenty of interesting and semi-interesting pitching in the Pirates' system tonight.

Here are the lines:

Justin Wilson: 5 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 5 BB, 5 K
Michael Dubee: 4 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Nathan Adcock: 5.2 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Brandon Cumpton: 3 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 0 K
Trent Stevenson: 3 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K

On the hitting side, Chase d’Arnaud went 4-5 with a 2B and 2 3Bs, Starling Marte went 1-5 with a 2B, and Matt Hague went 3-5.

I don't know if I'd go that far

He has played 28 games at 2B this year. He was described as an above average defender coming into the year, and I’m interested in seeing if that’s still true when the scouting reports come out.

http://bullpenbanter.com/

by Jeff Reese on Sep 6, 2010 10:20 PM EDT up reply actions

It really doesn't mean anything other than the M's wanted Noriega to get a little time at SS.

If anything, it just means they like Franklin’s abilities at SS more than Noriega, who was one of their top prospects going into the season.

Next season it seems more and more likely that Noriega will be playing SS at High Desert and Franklin at West Tenn and if he plays at 2B at West Tenn, I’m sure its only because then they would be curious about Kyle Seagers ability to handle SS.

As to the overall argument people are discussing: similar seasons, one is 19, the other is 23. Franklin, please and thank you.

by Kenneth Arthur on Sep 7, 2010 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

But I do think Green’s defensive question marks tend to get overstated. The arm is really the only thing that doesn’t play at SS. I am more optimistic that that can be worked around than if he had deficient range.
