Purke, Gerrit Cole, Martin Perez, Jameson Taillon? pick one (Not fantasy related)
Which pitcher between Gerrit Cole, Matt Purke, Jameson Taillon, and Martin Perez would you rather have and why? Just trying to start some debate. Right now personally I would take Gerrit Cole but I dont know enough about Jameson Taillon. What are your thoughts.
Cole has the highest Ceiling I believe with what is said to be Strasburg type stuff minus the control. Purke has pitchability and a lot of Cliff Lee in him. Perez I have never seen and same with Taillon

I think we both read Baseball America today.
If Gerrit Cole is really as good as BA advertises, then I would definitely put him #1. But even BA admitted that some scouts will prefer Purke. I think Martin Perez is getting a little underrated right now. And I, like you, don’t know what to make of Taillon until he actually pitches some next year.
Gun to head: Cole, Taillon, Perez, Purke. But by next season that list could be completely flip-flopped.
I love Purke and will have something like this
Purke-Cole-Taillon-Perez
I do think Cole and Taillon will be really really good but I like almost everything Purke has to offer
…they should send down Huntington & Nutting, because they aren’t ready, either. - royshowell
I like Purke a lot too, which is what makes this so difficult. I only rate Perez ahead of him because of experience and being closer to knowing what he is as a pitcher.

I think we are closer to knowing what Purke will be then Perez
I still question Perez’ Durability, Velocity, Command/Control. Johan Santana would be a nice thing for him to turn into but he is still only like 19 or 20 and has spent half the the season broken one way or another

I just mean the 276 minor league innings compared to 1 year of college for Purke.
Not to say that “stuff” versus “stuff” isn’t fair to evaluate right now, it clearly is. But Perez was challenged this season, he didn’t dominate, but he stood in there. Still has the K’s. There’s some questionable stuff on Purke right now too. Some would probably still put him by Jungmann, but I dont know. I’m far from an expert. They’re all great prospects.

I went Purke
And I’m shocked that he’s in last place. Ordered would be:
Purke
Perez
Taillon
Cole
Gerrit Cole has electric stuff, but the control issues worry me.

I'd take Purke over Taillon
then Cole and Perez, in that order. I’ve never been blown away by Perez, so I think the top three are in one tier, and then Perez is behind them, but not way behind.
Usually I agree but Arcia could probably hit a bounced pitch out of the park right now. -KBR
I would go...
Taillon
Purke
Cole
Perez
All have number 1 starter stuff, but Taillon has the best combination of stuff, projection, polish, and command. He also has 4 pitches that could all be plus pitches. None of the other four can say that. Also, Gerrit Cole is getting a little overrated. He DOES NOT have Strasburg type stuff. He sits mid 90’s. Around 94-96. Strasburg sits high 90’s. Around 96-98. Strasburg has WAY better secondary stuff and way better command. No pitcher should ever be compared to Strasburg(maybe Taillon in a few years…maybe). Cole COULD be Strasburg if everything goes right, but it probably won’t happen because of how far away Stras is as a pitcher.
Purke is really good and has the best chance of the two to go number one overalll next year. Purke’s fastball is not far from being as good as Cole’s and he has better secondary pitches. He is also still VERY projectable because of his ultra thin frame. He is almost as bad as Chirs Sale was(size not delivery).
ETHAN MARTIN!!!!
I went Perez
More based on his performance to date. He was dominant last year in A ball as an 18yr old. Texas was pretty aggressive sending him to the hitter friendly, Texas League, at 19yr. Still, Perez is the same age or younger than most of the guys listed and scouts are not questioning his stuff or makeup. I suspect, if the other guys were thrown into the Texas Leage at 19, they’d struggle too.
Give me the lefty, who draws comparisons to Johan.
+1 to all of that
I’m not surprised that people are picking the college arms or the recent HS draftee, but give me the guy who is the same basic age with experience and some success against upper level hitters.

Boy this poll shocked me. Glad to know SNTS is alive and well here. I’ll go with the pro here.
The wind is in the buffalo.
I'm a big Purke fan...
so I’ll go with him just barely over Perez. I like the way both of them throw the ball, and they’re both very advanced pitchers for such young guys.
Taillon isn’t as exciting as some of the past Texas HS fireballer arms…iunno why that’s totally subjective…I prefer Purke’s athleticism and left handedness to Cole.
Taillon isn't as exciting as some of the past Texas HS fireballer arms...
really? Most scouts and most of the top websites agree that he is arguably the top HS arm to ever be drafted. The only HS arm I would put in his league is Josh Beckett.
ETHAN MARTIN!!!!
There's always a "best prospect since Beckett" HS guy nowadays...
I like all these guys quite a bit, even Taillon. I just don’t like him as much as I like Purke or Perez. Even that doesn’t matter, because Taillon has the upside to be dominant. If it helps, I like him better than Cole. In a couple years once he gets some MLB training and he’s got some more athleticism in him I should like him alot more.
I went with Purke and Perez because I think they are better mechanically than the 2 right handers.
The following guys have been “the best HS RH since Beckett” include Jordan Walden, Homer Bailey, and Rick Porcello.
taillon is going to get more athletic?
He’s one big boy already, and while I don’t think he’s going to be a bad body guy, it’ll be interesting to see how fluid his motions are in 2-3 years.
With some pro training....
sure, I could see it.
I’ll see in a couple years I guess.
close vote
I went with Cole but I can’t really justify the pick. Gut, I guess. They’re all defensible choices.
This one might be best left for scouts who have seen all of these guys play
Obviously they’re all fantastic young pitchers with huge upside. We only really have solid statistical data on one of them. So I think that when you’re talking about relatively small differences like that and only scouting information to go on, you’re basically ranking them by intuition and maybe a small personal preference here or there.
There are certainly differences between them; some are lefty and some aren’t, some are more advanced than others. But I don’t think I’d feel comfortable ranking the four of these guys in any specific order without talking to some scouts first.
I’d probably take Perez based on the fact that he just put up some fairly solid K/BB numbers in Double-A as a 19-year-old, but one could probably convince me to take pretty much any one of these four guys with a well-organized and defended argument.

Taillon...
Love him as a prep prospect but you have to wonder if the Pirates will ever develop him correctly, since they never develop anyone correctly.
Uh, Daniel Moskos???
