Kyle Drabek has just pitched 3 innings and is out.
Is he on an innings cap?

Which makes Harrisburg's 3-2 loss especially painful.
They now trail Bowie by a half game in the Eastern League for a playoff spot. I realize it doesn’t matter but so much. They’re going to ask Tom Milone to play stopper again tomorrow in the first half of a doubleheader.

I’m a big fan of C. Allen. His command and ability to repeat his delivery have been a lot better than I expected from such a raw prospect. He has a big ceiling if he can keep improving. I really like players who address their flaws even as they advance a level through their system, especially when they start out as raw as Webster. It makes me think that he has a really nice chance to build on his success going into next year.
Dan Duffy

not “done,” technically, but there’s a rain delay and he probably won’t come back out. another real good outing for him.

He is really wanting to be our #1 pitching prospect.
He is pitching like it right now.
I've never seen a great comp for moustakas
not that many guys actually have fitting comps, but someone give me a few comps for Moose.
Tell me why I’d be wrong about Ryan Braun as a comp, at least statistically, as a guy who has a lot of success in the big leagues without a ton of traditional power hitter patience.
Seems like body type may be a big one.
Ooh!
Thought of a good one! Phil Nevin. That do anything for anyone? I like it.
Obvious difference high school vs. college star.. but still.

I’d love to see some more walks from Moustakas, but he is such an awesome combo of raw power and contact ability right now. I don’t know if people realize just how good his contact ability is. We’re talking about a guy who could easily hit .330 with 35 homers in a couple seasons. Other than Montero, I’m not sure if there are three current minor league hitters I’d rather have than Moustakas, Hosmer, and Myers. Other prospects might be more well-rounded, but at the plate, I’ll take those four.
I'd be pretty reluctant to project a kid with a 6-8 BB% who is a career .282 hitter to "easily" hit .330 in the majors.
He has fantastic plate coverage and elite bat speed… but .330? “easily?”
I’d be more comfortable with .300 and 25-30 HR projection – That’s a fantastic projection in its own right.

Not MILB but sorta 3B Danny Valencia
Is red hot !!!!
i put him in my top 150 last offseason and was scoffed at by a few… but he looks tremendously good. And it isn’t exactly a tiny sample size any longer.
His approach at the plate is consistent and very solid i don’t think it is too much of a fake lure at all.

I'd temper your excitement just a touch
although Valencia has been very good, he hasn’t walked an intense amount (6.7%), and his BABIP is at .379. I’m not a huge fan of BABIP, but a high BABIP like that mixed with low power numbers (.115) usually suggest that the player has been getting somewhat lucky with his balls in play.
I still Valencia settling in as an average starting 3B with good defense, but a severe lack of power from the position.
Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson
I don't know I think
batting average with batters in play is pretty ridiculous.
For 4 minor league season’s Danny V had a high BABIP
and also in 2010 he’s at a 19% Line Drive that isn’t unlucky…. He pounds the ball all over the field…. agaisnt right-handed or left-handed pitchers
He’s good you’ll see
and the power would certainly come, if he weren’t playing at Petco Park Version 2.0 (target field)

he's also a 2.2 WAR player this year
right now, while I’d expect that to be a little high i think he’s easily a 1.25-1.5 about every year

a 1.25-1.5 WAR player
is not average, it is below average. I would expect Valencia to annually tick around 2 – 2.5 WAR, given his adequate bat, replacement value, and defense.
Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson
I'm not sure what is ridiculous about BABIP
Anyway, Valencia isn’t a speedy guy or a masher so he’s not one of the two main types of hitters that generally see above average BABIP’s. Even if he is that rare exception he’s going to come down from the .379 clip he’s at right now. I think he’s probably closer to a .280/.330/.420 hitter than what he’s showing this year. He looks like a solid enough defender that he can be around league average like gore51 mentions below. It’s a long shot he comes near this kind of production again.

well said
yeah a .280/330/420 hitter sounds about right

Just noting, because I think it has its uses
But Valencia’s 2010 xBABIP currently sits at .309 on the year. Simply based on his batted ball profile and other statistics, he won’t be able to sustain anything near a .380 BABIP long-term.

One of the greatest BABIP hitters you should ever find is Ichiro and he's a career .357.
So no, he won’t sustain .380.
In fact, this is the 2nd highest BABIP of his career.
He posted a .401 in 2008 in 251 PA’s. This was a 23 year old in high-A.
Valencia’s August BABIP was .311 and his wOBA was .312. So he should really hope he can defy all odds to post a .380 BABIP, because otherwise – he won’t be maintaining good numbers for long.

His only above-average skill is defense
He’s a league average-player at best going forward, but given our absolute hole at the position, that’s enough for him to hold down the fort for a year or two.
hillstop
you seriouly think he’s only going to hold down the postion for a ‘year or two’ wow There is nobody in the system anywhere at 3B…
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Valencia starting for the Twins in 2015.

Well, maybe not 2015...
I mean he could either be out of their plans in 8 months or a starter for fours+ years.
His skillset is kind of fringy… If he gets hot he could endear himself to Gardenhire and entrench himself in the job. If he gets cold to start 2011 he could be written off as AAAA. The truth is obviously somewhere between, but his abilities don’t demand a MLB starting spot… so it could go either way.

He's already 26. That's why I say that.
His prime is already here, and it’s likely not going to be as long as most for that reason. But look, I see your point, and from watching him every day, I like him a lot. I’m just trying to be a little measured in my opinion of his play. We’ve seen this kind of play from lesser prospects many times.
As for the system, these things change a lot in the span of a few years. Players get drafted, traded, have breakouts, or fall flat. If the Twins’ 3B situation is as bad as it is now (which, honestly, I see no reason to expect that it won’t be) then Danny Valencia will start for however long he can be a valuable player. I’m hoping that he can.
The Twins have produced some solid regulars lately from unheralded ranks. Blackburn and Span weren’t high-profile, and this year Valencia and Duensing have joined those ranks. I wouldn’t count on Valencia as a long-term solution just yet, but he has earned the chance to hold down 3B out of spring training next year.

Ranking
I got him in the 12-20 range. The best pitching prospect the Cards have had since Ankiel…just hope the long term results are different!
Wainwright?
"If we hit that bull's eye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate"
not positive
and don’t feel like looking it up, but I thought Waino was a Braves prospect before coming over in a deal [maybe Drew?]…
Waino
As stated below we got him through a trade with ATL sending Drew and Marrero. Granted we did develop him thru the final stages of his minor league career but I am saying someone we drafted and developed. And Waino has well outperformed his projections from the minors…he was fairly highly touted but if me memory serves me right he was considered a ceiling of a #2.
I’m pretty impressed with Wainwright as well. I can remember vividly arguing with a Cardinals fan in one of my sim leagues over Wainwright in trade discussions. I was a rebuilding team trying to make my push after a couple years of losing and wanted a true ace. I put a lot of talent on the board but didn’t think Wainwright was worth it. If he keeps pitching like this, I was definitely wrong to pass it up.
brad hand AA debut
6 IP 3 H 2 ER 3 BB 4 K
I haven’t heard much about him this year. Year to date, between A+ and 1 AA outing, he has a 3.31 ERA and a 52/138 BB/K in 146.2 innings. For someone who doesn’t turn 21 until next March, that’s pretty good and worthy of more attention.

Jacob Turner
5 IP 2 H 1 R 0 ER 1 BB 7 K.
1.28 ERA in final 10 starts at high-A: 49.1 IP 41K / 10 BB.
I guess the only question would be the K-rate? It’s good but not great. Fewer walks than I thought he’d have for his first season.
I think even the K rate is fine
seeing as it’s his first year of pro ball and he’s in High A.
http://bullpenbanter.com
K rates can also be weird when a pitcher is on a limited pitch count, like Turner is. If I recall correctly, he has to come out when he’s at 75 pitches or after the fifth inning, whichever comes first. That really puts Ks at a disincentive.
I really like what Turner’s done this year. Shelby Miller has pitched himself to the front of the class, and Matzek still has a great future as well, but I have Turner comfortably second of the three. I would be hard-pressed to find thirty prospects I like more.
Pedrol Alvarez through 270 PA
.229/.311/.400
wOBA = .313
.171 ISOP, 10.7 BB%, 34.4 K% , .328 BABIP
even I didn’t think he’d be this bad… damn. KLaw is probably cracking a wry smile.
for comparison… the younger, more “raw” Mike Stanton through 284 PA
.239/.309/.486
.247 ISOP, 8.9 BB%, 31.6 K% , .305 BABIP
.363 is Valencia's wOBA ;)

rather have a guy who plays everyday than have a few months of Strasburg….

I still love Ack
I just keep looking at what Myers has done in his first full season and at his age… and I see RHB Joe Mauer.
and by that I mean a young Catcher/DH who is gonna OBP ~.390-.400 and have a couple power seasons where he just goes off for a .550+ SLG and looks like the best thing since sliced bread.
Bryce Harper could probably be Jason Heyward. maybe more power.

indeed
Mauer even had the same defensive problems. There was a lot of talk back in the day that he really didn’t have very good defensive skills and would likely be pushed to 3B or maybe even RF. When he was drafted, it was estimated that there was something like a 20 percent chance that Mauer would have the ability to stick at catcher . . .surprising that he has turned out to be a passable defensive player.
Mauer is way more than passable
If he fixed the concerns people had, it’s not a forgone conclusion that Myers can’t put it together too.
What I guess
Im really asking is whether or not he will stick at catcher with the Yankees….
With Sanchez and Montero in the system too, is there room for Romine? Do they waste his talent and use him as a backup catcher? Do they trade him?
Well
Montero is no great bet to catch, and Sanchez is 50 years away, so there should be a spot for him.
by auclairkeithbc on Sep 2, 2010 11:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Sanchez
I saw Sanchez recently at a Staten Island game and the best thing I can say about his defensive game is that he at least has some time to improve it.
4 passed balls and no accuracy with his throws to second. Granted, this was one game and he may have been off, but he really looked out of position back there.
Side note, they were playing Lowell and Bryce Brentz swing needs a major overhaul. Comes around the ball with a huge loop. Perfect whiffle ball swing, though.
Romine
Is probably the best defensive catcher out of the 3 Yankees catchers. I would hope they go with the defense and the potential for 275/15/75
75 what?

I guess he's never seen him then.
This year he’s allowed 84 SBs and only caught 24 runners (22%) in 97 games. Along with 5 errors and 6 passed balls.
He’s a pretty bad defender right now… the difference between Romine and the other bad defensive yankee catching prospects is there’s no reason Romine can’t become average-above average defensively. He has the defensive tools to do so. He’s not big and slow, either.

Im talking more long term
Sanchez is about 3 years away IMO, especially if he continues on his current path. I also think the yanks are determined to keep Montero at C for as long as possible because they dont wanna use a 23 yr old as a full time DH, and besides, Posada is gonna be their DH.

I'm honestly not sure
I heard conflicting reports about whether they wanted him to be a second baseman or an outfielder in the long term. He’s mostly been playing DH since signing at the deadline.
Hopefully his defensive skills will be good enough for him to play CF or 2B. He has the tools, like you said, but I’ve heard he’s raw.
