2011 Rookies of the Year
Someone asked me in the comment thread for some 2011 Rookie of the Year candidates, but I always whiff on questions like that at this point, given the many variables involved on playing time, etc., and with my prospect lists not even started yet. Jeremy Hellickson is an obvious candidate. Who else do you guys see?

Moustakas may be the most talented but I wonder if he'll be up early enough, with Betemit most likely at 3rd base and Jennings starting with the Rays out of the gate most likely.

Mous
will start the season at 3B. the Royals need to give their fan base something positive and they need to sell tickets. Mous is the most ready.

Yeah, he really won't
What’s the point of rushing Moose to the majors in April when they can hold off his arb-status for a couple months, not to mention see if Wilson Betemit’s breakout is for real.
There’s no reason to have Moustakas up in the majors on Opening Day 2011.
Winning sells tickets, not the promotion of one nice young player.

not to mention
That the org likes the Hosmer/Mous playing together hype. I don’t know if there is any truth to that, but I’ve heard it…
Picks
NL: Domonic Brown
AL: Chris Carter
Usually I agree but Arcia could probably hit a bounced pitch out of the park right now. -KBR
Dom is a good one.
Not so sure about Carter. He seems far from polished.

Regardless
of which team he ends up this would be awesome. But I doubt it happens.
Freeman will have a shot simply due to playing time
I’m not sure he’ll hit all that great in his first season, but he’ll have a chance.
If he breaks camp
I like Nick Weglarz. Its rarely a top 10 prospect going into the season that wins.
I'm expecting a poor man's Matt LaPorta
It should be hilarious watching Cleveland try to play Weglarz, LaPorta and Hafner at the same time.
http://bullpenbanter.com/
ehh
I think Weglarz is underrated round here, but either way, .275-.280 with some power can win RoY most seasons
I think he's highly overrated around here
I’ve seen him listed as a top 50 guy on some lists.
http://bullpenbanter.com/
Tough crowd
A guy that is similar to Joey Votto IMO – knows how to get on base, nice lefty swing that should be able to add power… hard to call somebody crazy for saying he’s top 50. Jeremy Hellickson is another prospect many thought was over rated the last few years. I think a lot of people are sleeping on Weglarz like they did Votto/Hellickson.
even if they arent
its secondary guys who win those awards half of the time. For every Longoria and Braun you get a Soto, Bailey or Coghlan
picks
Jared Goedert in the AL
Yonder Alanso in the NL
"The key to winning baseball games is pitching, fundamentals, and three run homers."
Opportunity
ROY is about getting an opportunity to play early enough in the season to do enough to impress the voters. Look at holes/deficiencies on major league rosters and match up top prospects who could take over and you’ll have your best ROY candidates. This long before spring training it’s really a crapshoot as MLB holes could get filled in free agency killing the opportunity. I’ll throw out a couple long shots from Cleveland (team with lots of holes): Chisenhall and Kipnis.
Phelps and Goedert
I would be shocked if Chis breaks camp with the big league team and surprised if Kipnis does. It is much more likely for Phelps and Goedert to break camp. Chis and Kipnis I expect up early summer or all star break. They are not going to rush Chis. He has not played at AAA yet and in chats with exec and FO they want both of these guys to get some time in AAA.
Wow...
f*ckin n00b.
I’m going Dominic Brown, who is entering the temporary talented rookie heaven that is the Phillies.
AL I’m going Chris Carter. I think his athleticism, especially as a hitter, is hurt by his numbers. They scream “big un-athletic guy who just hits for power.” I buy the bat.
chris crter and his almost mlb record of going 27 at bats to start his career off hitless?

27 AB's makes a career
didn’t you know?

At the same time those 27 AB point to the exact same issue the scouting reports did
The biggest issue talked about for him is the holes in his swing that MLB pitchers will consistently take advantage of. He’s now stuck out in 39.3% of his PA at the major league level. Of course it doesn’t mean he can’t turn it around or anything, but I think it pretty clearly points to the fact that strikeouts are going to be a huge issue for him at the MLB level in the near future.
I considered him...
but I figured it’s easier for a hitter to do it.

I dont think
He opens with Baltimore. Matusz, Tillman, Jake and Guthrie should all have spots, and either a FA or BB will have the fifth slot to open the season I think
I'm not sure I expect him to crack the Opening Day rotation either
but i think he’s up soon enough, and sticks once he’s up, to be in the RoY conversation
More obvious player guesses:
AL – Montero/Moustakas
NL – Brown
Less obvious player guesses
AL – Arencibia/Alex Liddi
NL – Matt Carpenter/Jarrod Parker
is Parker going to pitch?
he’s yet to pitch in anything other than a simulated game. but i like the heart.

Alex Liddi
won’t see more than 100 PA this year in the big leagues … if that.
Carlos Santana +1

Because he's not ROY eligible
Passed the AB and service time marks
Top 5's
My AL top 5
1.Jeremy Hellickson(if he starts)
2.JP Arencibia
3.Mike Moustakas
4.Zach Britton
5.Chris Carter
Not sold on Montero getting the needed AB’s. Not because he can’t play, but because the Yankees won’t rush him into their lineup while they’re contenders.
My NL top 5
1.Domonic Brown
2.Freddie Freeman
3.Yonder Alonso
4.Mike Minor
5.Brett Jackson
Jackson would be higher but what will the Cubs do? Soriano and Fukudome are too expensive to move and Byrd’s not going to be easy to move. Chapman isn’t on the list because I see him back in AAA to work back into a starter role.
by mattp31 on Sep 18, 2010 12:37 PM EDT via mobile reply actions
Minor
Not sure what the Braves plans are with him, but he’s at 37 innings right now and scheduled to start on Tuesday. Unless they shut him down after that he should get at least one more start, possibly two. He could go over the 50 inning limit in just two starts, but would easily cross it if he gets three more starts.
http://bullpenbanter.com
If Minor is ROY eligible, he'd be one of my favorites for the award
I don’t think there’s a player I’ve changed my opinion on more drastically than Mike Minor.

AL
I like your NL guys but the sheer fact that you don’t have Jennings in your top 5 for AL is concerning. He will be up for the whole season and end up with a stat line that looks like this.
.280avg 85runs 10hrs 65rbi 40sb 5triples 35dbles as well as playing tremendous Defense.
He is my AL front runner but Hellickson will give him a run for his money.
I see JP and Mous as tier 2 and Britton and Carter as tier 3 in your above rankings for ROY

Is the bold prediction that Dom Brown will be traded to an AL team?
by TwoEyesForAnEye on Sep 18, 2010 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions
It’s more about Jayson Werth, and that I believe Phili will resign him … in which case Brown will end up in Tampa or Oakland for a stud pitcher. Just spitballing, though. Obviously.
No way Philly brings back Werth.
They’re already shoveling money to Howard, Utley, Halladay, Ibanez and a bunch of other guys for next season. They already have one of the best young players in the game, fully ready to replace him.
Amaro should be fired if he just keeps re-signing his veterans. They’re gonna be in trouble soon with that kind of strategy, if they aren’t already.

Brown in Oakland?
I’d like that. I’d like that a lot.

What you fail to understand in your joyless myopia is that baseball is the key to life-- the Rosetta Stone, if you will. If you just understood baseball better all your other questions your, your... the, uh... the aliens, the conspiracies they would all, in their way be answered by the baseball gods.

AL Darkhorse
Kyle Gibson maybe?
He could thrive in Target Field if they keep the same infield defense and he keeps those ground ball rates up.
Peyton's good but have you ever heard of Jeff George?
AL ROY
Not surprised based off the opinion of some … but I’ll throw out Dustin Ackley’s name for good mention. He is a sure fire lock (with the exception of injury) to be an everyday player in Seattle’s line-up by June 1st.
I’m going with Dustin Ackley of the Seattle Mariners because he’ll be the starting second baseman next year. He has adjusted very well to hitting in triple A and will be playing winter ball in preparation for next season.
