August 7th Minor League thread

Happy August 7th! I'm gonna get this thing started early - like my day. Happy birthday to Edgar Renteria, easily the greatest postion player ever born on August 7th. Here's some guys who will be dealin' or, not-so-dealin' today in the Bushes.

AAA- Carlos Carrasco, Brandon Beachy vs Vance Worley, Zach Britton takes on Louisville wrecking crew, Charlie Fur-Bush, Darek Holland, and Mike Moustakas and the rest of the Omaha Royals get to face Radhames Liz.

AA Ball - Bryan Morris, Kyle Drabek!, Brayan Villareal (19.2 IP, 1.83 ERA, 18Ks/6BB at AA), Danny Duffy takes his second turn for NW Arkaansas, and big Simon Castro takes the hill.

A+, A, and short-season A - Garrett Richards makes second start for Rancho Cucamonga, Matt Moore, Tyler Matzek, Trevor May, and the matchup of the day .  .  . Jenry Mejia  v  Delin Betances, thats two electric arms goin' in the FSL!

Have fun kids!

No team claimed Villarreal in the rule5? He has been real good all year, though I am not entirely familiar with what he works with…

i think he's quite underrated

iirc, fb can get up to the mid-90’s fairly consistently, along with a fairly solid slider, and a decent change.

Brackman

has a tendency to have one bad inning that makes an otherwise good outing look mediocre. Usually it’s in the 5th or 6th inning, so perhaps fatigue/conditioning is a factor.

I think last start doublestix was saying his velocity is significantly up, too.

May have been here… may have been on twitter… can’t remember. I havent been on the gamethreads much here recently. I love how busy they are… but sometimes I try to avoid them because I know I’m looking at like… a half hour of reading and responding if I open it.

Also, its sooooo easy to fall into that trap where you think all prospects who are performing well are better than all prospects who aren’t executing/performing well. Your instincts tell you strongly to take the guy with the better line, even though you know that what they’re doing now isn’t necessarily all that important.

Was at that game

TJ McFarland and Deolis Guerra were both utterly unwatchable. In McFarland’s case, it’s a brutal AA debut in which he had no stuff, no command, and demonstrated little sense that he knew what was going on on the mound. He should get extra credit for managing to give up that many runs to a Rock Cats lineup featuring three guys with a sub-500 OPS.
Guerra… just wow! He’s taken so many steps backward in the last year it’s unbelievable. First inning, he looked unhittable. Then he came back out for the second and from his first warm-up pitch, it was just obviously gone.

I am also curious to hear realitypolice’s opinion here. I live 20 minutes from the stadium so my kids and I catch probally 10-15 games a year. Chis is my favorite player and I watch him quite a bit. Just would be nice to get another scouting prospective from someone that has actually seen him in person.

by Pup Dog on Aug 8, 2010 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Not exactly a scouting trip this time...

I was with my 4-year-old daughter and about 200 coworkers, so it wasn’t the best chance to really watch mechanics. Kipnis does still have the nice, short path to the ball he had at ASU and Chisenhall took a good swing the first time up, but that’s the best I can give you from last night!

I ask again...

Gomez/Humber/Guerra/Mulvey.

Where is the accountability for Bill Smith? Wasn’t this by his own admission the trade that would make or break his career? Not to mention he’s compiled a $110mm flawed team that may miss the playoffs. & Garza and Bartlett for Delmon and Brendan Harris no longer looks terrible, but I’m still scoring that a win for Tampa.

by alskor on Aug 8, 2010 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions

agreed

I’m not sure how he got so hyped. I mean, mildly-decently intriguing, but the way some folks talk about him, you’d think he was an elite talent that was being held back. I think he can be a decent starter, but the rhetoric was ridiculous. Certainly, part of it was the fact that the Royals really didn’t have better players, so not playing him was debatable, but still.

by toonsterwu on Aug 8, 2010 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions

not playing him was debatable?

Where? in Dayton Moore land?

While a hitless game or two is a bit early to be writing his obit, I don’t recall reading anyone call him an “elite talent” — do you have a quote to back that up, or just talking out of your hat?

But keeping him in AAA while high-priced/low production free agents like Jacobs and Guillen took up ABs to no good end may be a debatable point to you, but I’d say for most it was a short and easy debate. That doesn’t mean people were saying he’d be “elite” or, really, even above average. I don’t understand why people need to caricature opposing arguments. You want to argue that Jacobs and Guillen were/are better than Kila, be my guest. But don’t tell me anyone called him elite.

by scooter on Aug 8, 2010 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions

But where has he been hyped?

I never saw him making top 50 lists either preseason or midseason. Sure there has been some talk around here, but none of the mainstream guys have hyped him.

To me, he is a low-Avg, high-OBP, above-avg power guy. That has value in the bigs, but I don’t see him winning any MVP awards or making many AS games. I think that is pretty much the consensus around here too.

6 shutout innings for Derek Holland in AAA tonight. Kind of a big start for a kid who missed 2 1/2 monthes with injuries and strugged his last start- now 6-2 1.49 down there and could be called up soon.

Big, Simon Castro 6IP – 5Hits – O Runs – 0 Bbs- 7 K’s . Some things were working tonight in San Antone. James darnell hit two longballs as well. He’s a player I still believe in. I think injuries derailed him early but, he can play.

That makes sense. I just haven’t heard anything on his “stuff” since he has gotten back, but he certainly seems to be able to outmatch AAA competition. I have to assume he is part of next year’s TX rotation. Is he a bullpen guy later this year?

Might be, in the playoffs

I suspect he gets called up within a couple of weeks if Harden keeps sucking. He should get a few starts in the last month of the season and then maybe be a bullpen option in the playoffs. The playoff rotation looks like Lee-Lewis-Wilson-Hunter at the moment.

It sounds like he isn't throwing his slider much yet.

He’s mostly throwing his 4 seam FB, 2 seam FB, and a CU. He only threw a couple slider’s last night.

Desmond Jennings

0/5

Anyone else kind of down on him? It’s been a pretty disappointing year. He’s not really forcing the Ray’s hand at this point. The only thing he’s doing as well as last year is working those stolen bases. Average down, walk rate down, power down, K’s up. Not encouraging :(

I'm cutting him some slack for now

He has had wrist and shoulder injuries this year.

Wrist

Injuries are god awful for hitters. Look at Derek Norris.

This

While the performance is disappointing and his stock may be a bit down, the fact that he is back on the field playing is the most important thing with a relatively polished guy with his kind of tools.

6 innings

They even allowed him to go 6 innings tonight. He was a 5 inning guy forever.

Jenrry

4.1 IP 2 HA 0R/ER 2BB 4K’s, 8.00 GO/AO

…at three different stops thru the minors he has 19K’s in 14 IP with a 11.0 GO/AO.

How terribly short sighted of the Mets brass [Omar] to allow him to begin in the pen this year, at least they finally got it right and he continue his development properly.

Benefit

The benefit – of course – has been limiting Mejia´s innings this year and also giving him valuable experience in the majors that could well help his development, making him understand the game and what he needs to work on better.
