Sim League Prospect Draft
Meant to post this before, but here is a look at how 30 owners in a sim league valued the amateurs and unowned players available for drafting. The unowned crop was pretty strong IMO, while it's been widely publicized that the Amateur crop was a bit lackluster this year. Sorry in advance for the long post. Any thoughts on which teams did well?

I’m trying to remember who all from the league posts here from time to time.
Obviously you and I do. BobbyS and ShaneS have accounts but don’t post that often. Marlin and Ben used to post on here a good bit but I haven’t seen them much lately. Then some of the newer guys saw the want ads here in Sickel’s site so they may have accounts but I don’t know what they would be.
I’m still not as high on Cosart and Singleton as you are but I still think you did a really good job. I’m sort of kicking myself that I took O’Connor that high but I still like the way he sounds in the reports. We will see what happens.
Some good value picks that stand out to me
Singleton at 26 I thought was very nice value
Salcedo in the 2nd round and Arcia in the 4th are really nice too. Those guys could have been 1st rounders or supplemental rounders and I wouldn’t have blinked
Chris Archer at the end of the 3rd is a steal
Christian Colon at #19 is a nice value pick
-1 and only member of the Nick Weglarz fan club!
Arcia
Didn’t have as much press at the time as he didn’t have the nice stats behind him. That said, he’s looking like a nice pick.
When was your draft held?
I like what KC did, getting Lamb that late seems like a steal. Other picks that seem like good value are: Hak-Ju Lee at 36, Garrett Richards at 46, Brandon Belt at 81, and Trayvon Robinson at 138.

Started
Same day as real draft (June 4?), but lasted a few weeks. I was KC, and tried to draft Trayvon at 135/136, before realizing I didn’t have the pick. Put him on the radar by announcing my intentions though.
Do the amateurs
have to sign, or do you retain the rights thru college if they don’t?
http://milbprospects.blogspot.com/
Retain them thru college...
Thus Zach Lee and Austin Wilson types could still have value if not signed this year…
Minnesota
got a lot of polished pitching.
Viciedo, Hak Ju Lee, AJ Cole, Gausman in the 6th is a steal.
http://milbprospects.blogspot.com/
I like Colorado’s picks of Marisnick and Wilson at the top. Not a fan of the Florida draft though.

COL
I have shied away from the really young toolsy types in the past,,,,but my farm is/was VERY thin on potential impact players, so I figured those two were both worth the risk…and then tried to mix in a few more higher level guys (Rizzo, Doubront, etc) to even out my draft.
Most of my best prospects right now…are from this draft….which could either say good things about this year’s selections, or horrible things about my farm leading into it! haha
We had to change GMs for Florida in the middle of the draft.
I think his pick of Segura at 3.12 was his first. I thought he reached on Collins but I’m not sold he can be a high leverage RP. Milligan is pretty toolsy but having a horrible year. I like Corban Joseph actually.
So I think they Marlins could have done better but there were some extenuating circumstances. I believe he said he would have taken Colon where the previous GM took Skole, can’t remember who he would have taken instead of Sanchez.
I also
Like the Minnesota, with Gyorko being one of my favorite selection to add to the arms acquired

John Lamb, Garrett Richards, Carlos Perez, Adrian Salcedo, Wilking Rodriguez, Brad Emaus, Kevin Gasuman, Brandon Belt are some good values
some curious picks in there too, but in a league like this you gotta take risks, I think there might have been too much of a focus on guys who were just drafted, though. I don’t know if I’d take a guy like Kyle Parker, or even Jake Skole in the first 3 rounds, especially with names like that available. Wilking is a top 100 guy and he is going behind pretty much the entire first round of the draft. I don’t know about that.
Overall very interesting o see results of something so deep like this.
Definitely different strategies in terms of how the teams approach the draft. Some of the GMs just took whoever the next highest drafted player was unfortunately. Some GMs just don’t seem to put much focus on the minors and I think it will really hurt their teams in the long run unfortunately. The different strategies definitely make it interesting though.
You have to keep in mind...
…there are NO lists to go off of…So you have basically 30 different scouting departments working without ANY shared knowledge of what each other like. We all have access to BA and the like, but each team has different needs that you can’t see as well. Not defending anyone necessarily, just saying…Even thought the majors league teams have wayyy more resources, there were also plenty of non-consensus picks. On the selfish side, I love to see a Skole or Parker taken, because my guy moves up a notch. That said, we’ve got different levels of owners, as guys below have said, as well as different levels of need.
All in all, I agree that you have named a few nice picks (keeping in mind that the draft started almost 2 months ago).
You could tell each GM was going off completely different lists the longer the draft went on. After Archer, I don’t really think I took anyone that was on anyone else’s radar. Honestly, Colome seemed like the only pick I made where someone right after me had said they were hoping he fell to their next pick.
I'm confused by what this means. I mean, is it run any differently than what a normal fantasy baseball draft would be run?
These are the kind of leagues..
I’m trying to give information too at my site. Even after all the picks you guys made, I bet I could find a ton of guys I’d be psyched to take. Yes, I’m that big of a nerd about this stuff.
If any of you guys could offer me insight as to how my efforts could help you guys, let me know. I want to offer a product that could be another opinion and help you find the kind of players you are looking for.
My database has over 5000 players from the big leagues down to international guys from this season to a few players not eligible until the 2015 draft. I can sort it to find whatever you are looking for.
Someday I’d like to get this online but I don’t have the knowledge or the cash flow at this point so for now, it’s in a spreadsheet and I’m putting it into an access database to be a little more aesthetically appealing.

I suppose deep rankings that are up to date would help some people. killa already mentioned the lack of information that is out there on prospects in June. Most of the online publications are knee deep in their draft coverage so it is understandable that they aren’t doing updated lists/rankings (plus they have small samples to go off of and possibly very little new information in terms of reports).
I’m not sure what kinds of things would be helpful. I did purchase Seiler’s draft guide this year but it turned out to be more of a good read than a useful tool for the draft given so much of our draft pool was not in the guide because they had already turned pro.
Well...
You could start by being my personal volunteer draft consultant. :-p
Really though, I think it’s tough to cater to sim leagues because each is going to have a different set of draft rules and preowned players. So each leagues draft pool is going to be significantly different concerning international and minor league guys.
I suppose, it would be pretty sweet if there were resources that we could simply plug in a database of our ineligible and eligibility rules. BUT….I don’t know if i would like something that basically takes all of the work out of a GMs hands.
If i could just pull up a auto generated list of pre ranked guys, it wouldn’t be nearly as fun or rewarding. I enjoy having to research several different sites to get opinions, stats, updates, etc…..and then seeing how it all fits within my organizational needs.
Not that such a product couldn’t be useful, I’d just be hesitant to agree with one that took too much away from individual work .
Good point
Most of the fun is in the research, that’s why I do what I do, I really enjoy it. It’s fun to see video and read opinions and come up with your own opinion.
The main thing that my system could do is provide names and another opinion. It wouldn’t really take away the fun of research, it would just be another tool.
The rating systems used by John and Andy are very broad, mine is more specified and can be sorted more to however you want it. If you want a list of high ceiling OF’s within 2 years of the majors, you can scan it to see who is taken and who’s not. Take the top 5 names and let the research begin :)
As for the consultant position, if you want another another opinion, just ask.

Just to expand a bit...
…on what was said about Lists below. There are absolutely Zero lists that weigh Brett Eibner versus Miguel Valezaquez for example, amateurs versus unowned minor leaguers. That’s what makes it really tough. In the past, I was usually a bigger scouter of the amateur ranks. This year, with the widely perceived “weak” draft class, I scouted unowned minor leaguers, including amateur signings (which take a year to enter the draft pool), to try to grab some strength of past draft classes that were overlooked. I think the only amateur I grabbed was Gauntlett. It’s hard to judge what the owners 29 owners are looking at, with such a big pool. The depth also plays a large role, as anybody ever listed in a Top 100 or 150 in the past (i.e. Colome) is going to be nabbed very early.
Interest
I don’t know how to contact the original author privately, but what game/program do you use for the Sim? DMB, Strat, etc? Do you have a league site you can post or send to me?
Thanks.
We use DMB.
You can find some of the details from the fanshot I created earlier. I’m not sure why Toad sounded upset our base rules were framed off of their rules, we have made considerable changes since. DMBO is a great league as well though from everything I have heard. I tried to get a team there myself before deciding to create my own league.
whoever got Lamb and Cosart are huge winners. i’d take them before a majority of the guys they got taken in front of.
R.I.P. cwhitman412, Frederick0220, & Mets2k9
Well there are no openings but we keep a waiting list. While you wait, you are welcome to serve as an assistant GM for a team so you can get acclimated to the league and its rules. There are some more details in the fanshot I referenced earlier if you are truly interested. Just take a look and send me an e-mail.
revenue sharing?
how does that work exactly?
by auclairkeithbc on Aug 6, 2010 10:07 AM EDT up reply actions
We break all 30 teams into 6 tiers based on the previous years base payroll (we call it base revenue but it is essentially your cap minus the revenue sharing you received). Each tier gets 5% more than the previous so the poorest teams get the most RS, and the tiers actually change as their base revenue increases/decreases (your base revenue increases based on your team’s performance).
On the other end, I believe every team pays 20% into the RS pool. The smallest tier gets paid 5%, then it scales up from there.
Nice Depth
I commish a 26-team strat league, and we have prospect rosters 45-deep. These picks pretty much reflected our most recent draft.
From a KC Perspective
Guys I liked that went (closely) before my picks:
2.15-Yordy Cabrera-Strictly because I had no Org. 3B other than Moustakas, and I think he’ll hit. (Took Velazquez @ 2.19)
3.22-Yorman Rodriguez- Had him at maybe a 55-45 edge over Rafael Rodriguez (stats since probably widen that gap), but this pick forced my hand with Rafael at 4.01.
4.30 Trayvon Robinson- Had I thought he’d be taken, I would have selected him over Robinson Lopez in 3rd Rd. Gamble didn’t pay off. Eldemire has long been a favorite, and didn’t want to lose another guy I had my sights set on.
7.04-Jacob Petricka-Like the progress his velocity made at end of season, which has also been evident in pro results (despite ARL). Went with organizational depth with Mycal Jones, who provides insurance for Grant Green, Brandon Crawford, and Gustavo Pierre at an important position.
From a TB perspective, within 10 picks of mine:
Josh Sale at 1.21
Adrian Salcedo at 2.24
Pretty much from that point on, draft went really well for me. Because of those two picks though, I pushed O’Connor/Ramirez up. There were a few guys I had in front of Ramirez/Archer that went more than 10 picks before me but if I could have gotten those two guys and still nabbed Ramirez/Archer I would have been absolutely ecstatic with my draft.
