Santana LCL sprain
Via my boy Anthony Castrovince twitter.... High grade sprain of the LCL for Carlos Santana. No timetable for his return yet. #Indians training staff still gathering info.
No tears, no factures, only a high grade sprain. wow. This dude has a bionic leg. I'd guess he is done for the year, but should be more than ready for spring training. When the play happened, I thought it could be a career ending injury, now he'll only miss two months. Cleveland can breathe again.

Sprain
A sprain is a tear, isn’t it? And a high grade sprain doesn’t sound good at all. It’s good that he doesn’t have tears to multiple ligaments and they didn’t use the word ruptured, though.
A sprain
is an overextension of a ligament that can produce small tears. It’s not the same as a “tear.” To equate the two would be an error. A high grade sprain is less than a partial tear.
There’s not a lot of history on this, as knee injuries very rarely involve the LCL (ACL and MCL injuries are much, much more frequent), but this is fantastic news.
OK
Thanks for the clarification. The first site I had seen when I googled LCL sprain seemed to equate sprain and tear, with a grade 3 sprain being a complete tear.
I don’t even play a doctor on TV, so I don’t have any knowledge on the subject, but appreciate info.
I don't have much more...
my fiance tore her ACL, MCL, and Meniscus on the soccer field years ago. 90% of my info on knee injuries comes from her. (side note: she was still able to serve as the emergency catcher on her HS softball team, so that’s something).
Speaking of my fiance...
she’s a lawyer, but she’d be a damn good physical therapist. Her reaction to seeing the video last night, which she reminded me of this afternoon: “looks like he got his lateral, but i think he turned his leg before he caught anything else.”
That's pretty good on-the-spot diagnosing there.

Speaking of on-the-spot diagnosing, she sounds like a keeper.

seriously
Brains of a lawyer, a sports fan, and intimately familiar with contorted body positions.
Frankly, I’m confused as to why he even bothered with the whole engagement business.
I'm sure she'll be flattered
when I show this to her.
But yes, she’s a keeper.
As a Sox fan
this might have been good for the future division battles. But I am happy it hasn’t destroyed his career as I want to see how he pans out.
As a Red Sox fan
I’m SO happy to hear this, obviously it sucks that he’s injured at all but after seeing that play last night I was really upset. Carlos Santana was one of my favorite prospects and I would’ve felt terrible if his career was jeopardized by a player on my favorite team. Good luck Carlos

Good News
Here’s hoping Carlos makes a full recovery. Do any of you think he’ll be able to be healthy enough to play in the Arizona Fall League?
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Considering
Now that he is their ML starting catcher I would be shocked if he played in the AFL.
My left LCL
was partially torn in high school (triple jump injury) and I believe it took 3 weeks on crutches, 6 weeks with a knee brace, and roughly 10 weeks of solid physical therapy to really walk normally without pain or limping. No surgery was needed, since the ligament was, and this is the Dr.‘s words “only 20% torn”. Don’t know what that means, really, but that’s what he said.
After the 10 weeks, I could run at maybe 75% of my total ability, and that built up to around 95% in another 2 weeks. Landing my jumps, however, was just awful. It hurt like hell anytime I’d sqaut down, even without the added force of landing the jump. So, if Santana didn’t have any tearing at all, and considering he’s a professional athlete, with access to a high class medical staff, I’d assume his recovery could (should?) potentially be faster than mine.
Every injury is different, I suppose, but it’s been 11 years since that injury and it’s only acted up on me 2-3 times since it healed. Although, I don’t squat for a living, so adjust your sights accordingly, I suppose.
how did he not tear anything
what is he made of. Also I have a nick name for him, Gumby

Seriously.
Very, very happy. Even if he doesn’t catch for awhile (if at all), the chances of this hurting his offensive game are slim to none. With a bat like his, even at 1B he’s an elite player.
Latest...
Indians catcher Carlos Santana will have left knee surgery late Friday morning to repair his lateral collateral ligament and will miss the rest of the season.
