Awesome outing, and it gives him just one walk in his last 2 starts. This guy looks really good save for an ugly start or two.
Let's just throw all the Astros guys in here
Delino DeShields, Jr. – 1 for 3, 2B, RBI
Austin Wates – 1 for 3, RBI (first pro hit?)
Lyles currently putting together a great outing too, I’ll post it when he comes out

Certainly not great. Not even good. 5 IP, 0 K, 1 BB, 2 R.

Well, things took a turn for the worse.
When I wrote that it was 4.2, 0 K , 0 BB, 3 H, 1 ER and 11/3 GO/FO
I’m assuming he’s done now- 6 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 1 BB, 11/6 GO/FO
Certainly better than his 2 prior AAA efforts.
Strasburg elbow
Maybe a big uh-oh. Haven’t seen video, but reportedly he was in serious pain.
wanted to stay in the game
couldn’t have been THAT serious. hope not.

Fair enough
First all I saw was this: http://twitter.com/injuryexpert/status/21789616974
But there’s also this: http://natsinsider.blogspot.com/2010/08/strasburg-pulled-in-5th-with-injury.html
He did?
Very encouraging. He’s on my fantasy keeper team :p

1B Tyler Moore Tonight 4 for 4 2HR 5RBI and a Double
Now I mention him about a week ago and most of you didn’t believe me when I said this dude is somebody to keep an eye on. On the season he’s hitting .264BA, 28HR, 102RBI, .315OBP, .564SLG, .875OPS. This guy keep getting better and better as the season goes along(big reason why the PNats are leading the playoff race). He has 4HR in the last 4 games and 7HR in his last 10 games. You guys better jump on Tyler Moore bandwagon before it’s to late.
Be real with yourself.
Tyler Moore
I’m pretty sure everyone very much appreciates a 23 year old 1B in High A who doesn’t walk and strikes out a lot.

I'd be wary of this line if he was doing it in the majors
let alone in high A.

Low OBP, High K's...old for his level.
I’d be a bit more interested if he wasn’t a 1b.
I think what's more peculiar about him is the gargantuan jump he's had to his season.
Before the all-star break his line was a pedestrian .197/.240/.398/.639 in 259 at bats. Since the all-star break his line is ridiculous: .356/.403/.764/1.167 in 191 at bats. I can understand the wariness about him as a prospect since lower than desirable contact (that first half .240 OBP had him completely off of my radar despite a solid season for Hagerstown last year) and a 1B position (that first half .240 OBP had him completely off of my radar despite a solid season for Hagerstown last year) raise red flags about how valuable he is at AA let alone MLB.
A more intriguing question for me is has he passed Marrero? Marrero’s been the highest 1B prospect by a wide margin in the system for years. Yet Marrero has completely cratered lately. He’s down to a .776 OPS. Over his last 10 games he’s managed a feeble .333 OPS. This is the time that he’s supposed to be cementing a warranted promotion to AAA for the start of next year. Instead, guys like Tyler Moore are busting out of nowhere. I’d be curious where a Moore vs. Marrero discussion would lead right now. 2 months ago, it would have been a joke. Morre’s strength and Marrero’s feeble might make it more interesting now.

Flexor Tendon
There saying he strained/tore his flexor tendon on MASN
by mwyche on Aug 21, 2010 10:30 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
In other words...
while you’d always prefer a young pitcher to not be injured at all, it shouldn’t be career threatening.
No, but a lot of times a flexor tendon injury is a precursor to major UCL injury
Its looking more and more likely that Strasburg will have arm problems in his career, however that doesn’t mean he can’t still be really good when he’s healthy. His best hope might be something along the lines of Smotlz’s career path.
The one good thing here is that they should be able to just shut him down for awhile now and hopefully he’s back at full strength next year. While this may point to future arm problems, if it completely heals before he pitches again he shouldn’t be any more likely to tear something next year than he was this year.
Project Prospect
I certainly respect them for putting themselves out there with a prediction like that, but to then rank him 4th (or whatever he was) are simply hedging their bets.

That is part of their goal though and they are clear on that point. They weigh floor more than the other analysts and are looking for the most valuable big league players over the course of their careers. If Strasburg’s career is cut short, or his stuff diminishes, due to injuries, a low ceiling/high floor guy who settles in as a #3/#4 could conceivably have more total value at the end of their careers.
I think the biggest reason why PP gets so much flack is people expect BA/BP type rankings but not everyone does this the same way. Not saying you are one of those people but it’s clear reading the negative comments directed towards them on various sites that many people aren’t trying to understand their approach.
Or they think he'll be injured a good bit but dominate when he's healthy
Let’s say he goes through a few amazing healthy seasons, misses a season or two because of injury, spends some time in the bullpen, then settles in as a good starter that doesn’t ever throw 200 innings. That’d still be more valuable than most prospects in spite of the injury problems.
Lyles
Weird line in his third AAA start.
6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 0 K. However, 11/6 GO/AO. He seems to be getting a lot more groundballs lately, as he also had a similar number in his last start (when he got blown up). I wonder if he is working on that part of his game or if it’s just random variation?
Eh.
Chavez cranked it up pretty well when in Pittsburgh. Can’t be that far off.

I remember hearing that the gun was definatley hot when, early in the year Hochevar was sitting nearly at 94 at home
and like 92 to 92.5 on the road. It died down a bit, but I think I remember one of the Rays starters seeing a velo boost when they were there. Still, 98-99 from sale is good =p

exactly, I just hope that Chicago fall so in love with him that they keep him up as an RP to start next year. They better be moving him back to starting after this season.

probably wasn’t 98, but he has hit 98 at his absolute max this year and once or twice last year.

Moores been on fire during the second half he had another 2 HRs today. Hopefully Moore and Norris can help carry them to the playoffs. It’d be really interesting if B. Harper made his Minor League debut in the Carolina League playoffs.

Jaff Decker done
Madfriars tweeted that Decker went on the DL with a broken hand. Hasn’t been a good week for Padre prospects.
Mixed information
The SD Union-Tribune today reported “Jaff Decker will miss the rest of the season with a fractured middle finger after being hit by a pitch.”
I had pulled the info on his wrist from a game story on 8/15 where Jaff said:
“Decker flied out in the sixth and felt something pull in his left hand. He left for a defensive replacement an inning later.
“When I made my second out I felt a tweak in my left wrist and because we were up by so much the coach didn’t want to risk anything else happening,” he explained. “It was just precautionary.”
Obviously, I screwed up in part b/c he came back after that injury and hit in a few more games. That said, Jaff’s last game was 8/18 and he wasn’t hit by a pitch in that contest. (Cody Decker was, but he was back in the lineup this weekend). So, I think my post was wrong, but I’m not sure that the other information is right…

Watched Montero catch tonight
Perhapes the worst defensive catcher I have ever seen, well perhapes to the level Lavernhand (Boston Pros) was and he was moved. Two passed ball in one inning led to one guy getting to third and then the 2nd one the runner scored on it. He looked pissed off with the mask off after. I missed the homer he hit but his stance is back to where it was.

sorry Kupe
I really respect your opinions, but I think wimmers will be incredibly pedestrian and I can’t get excited about his numbers in A+ vs a terrible pirates affiliate.
wimmers
I was just reporting the numbers. He was making his pro debut and while the Pirates affiliate may not have prospects of distinction, they’re still better players than the ones that Wimmers faced in college.
The only person I know who MIGHT like Wimmers more than me is John. Not sure what the Project Prospect POV is on him but I’d guess he’s a guy they really like too. There’s just not much to dislike about him . . .velocity is solid, out pitch in his change, curve is respectable, throws plenty of strikes, lots of pitchability. It’s an awesome package.
I absolutely love Wimmers
I have no idea how much I like him compared to you, but to me, the dude is going to be a really good pitcher. I’d easily give him a B grade, and I wouldn’t really argue throwing a B+ at him.
Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson
I'd have to think on B+
His stuff is good, but maybe not quite traditional frontline starter good. I might need more in the way of results for that. But if he continues to pitch well in the FSL right out of college, a B+ wouldn’t seem out of the question.
Grade
I’m pretty skeptical about throwing a solid B+ grade on a 21st overall pick with (essentially) no professional performance data. If there was that much consensus on his value, wouldn’t he have been picked sooner?
B, I can see the argument for, with a chance for B+ if he meets expectations.
Basically, need more data.
Yup, I'd agree with this, too.
I might even consider B a tad aggressive, but I’m definitely not ready to slap a B+ on Wimmers yet. Definitely a B- at least, probably closer to B.
I try to take the wait-and-see route with most draft picks, though, because you end up learning an awful lot of players in their first full season.
I like baseball.

on the other hand
I was never much of one for consensus. In fact, I actually refuse to look at any other top prospect lists for a couple weeks before I make my own, and never at the major publication lists . . .after all, if you guys wanted to see Baseball America’s top prospects, you wouldn’t come to me.
He’s easily a grade B. But most likely not more than that for the moment. We’ll see . . .handling the Florida State League out of college is pretty big.
I agree with you on Wimmers
He’ll be a high B for me. I couldn’t care less where he was drafted or how much money he got.
http://bullpenbanter.com/
Agreed. I’d need to see a lot out of Wimmers to get him higher than a B, probably more than he can do this year on a pitch count. But he’s a very nice looking pitcher who’s got a lot going for him, and I’m very comfortable with him in the B range. I don’t know if I like him as much as kupe, but I’m certainly a believer.
Adding to the intrigue is the fact that the Twins are very good at spotting and developing college pitchers in the range where they took Wimmers. You could construct a pretty good rotation of recent Twins college draftees from the late first to third rounds: Garza, Baker, Slowey, Duensing, and Perkins all fit the bill, and now they’ve got Gibson and Wimmers in the pipeline.
It really surprises me that the Twins continue to get Wimmers-like players in the draft for slot. You’d think someone would look at Baker, Slowey, Duensing, Blackburn, etc. and notice something going on. It’s tough to develop aces when your farm system is geared like the Twins’, but they’ve managed to find a couple in the scrapyard while filling out their rotation with cheap, effective control pitchers.
Wimmers will be pedestrian
If by Pedestrian you mean a #3 in a good rotation, when he has years where he has #2 type numbers.
because
that fits the twins’ M.O.? you hear the same thing with twins’ pitchers year after year, yet when is the last time they drafted and developed a pitcher into a #2? a #3? i hear twins fans resting their hats on kevin slowey as of late, but that guy has pedestrian stuff and, like all twins pitchers, has zero mound presence.
glen perkins was a first round pick from the big 10 too, AND he’s a lefty so his margin for error is way greater, yet where is he?
Yeah, seriously. The guy was just drafted.
His prospect status right now has nothing to do with the organization he is in.
hate to disagree
but how can you NOT take the organization into consideration? not doing that is just plain dumb
If anything, the organization will help him
They get a lot out of guys with poor stuff, and I don’t think Wimmers falls under that label. Using Glen Perkins as a negative for Alex Wimmers? I don’t see it.
Kyle Gibson certainly hasn’t been hurt by being drafted by the Twins.

He had 8 appearances for the Reds AZL team.
Including six starts, so he’s been throwing some this year, and fairly well for a guy just back from an injury. He’s still just 20 so he’s got time, but the control is still an issue and he can’t seem to string half a season of decent health together. I think he’ll make for a good bullpen arm down the road.

Another decent start, finally getting hitters out which is good to see. I was really questioning the reports about his secondary stuff but this is more like what I thought he could do. I still think he should be giving up less hits but it’s nice to see the BBs go down and the Ks go up.
