Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Suggestion Thread

I am traveling today and don't know if I will get back home in time to get any writing done. Use this as a suggestion thread. We are almost done with the Top 20 reviews. After that, we will do an AQA thread and get back to minor league notes as the season begins drawing to an end. What else would you like to see?

Sorry, just realized that came off a bit douchey (douchy?) and obnoxious

If Tabata can drastically improve his walk rate or power production, as well as improve his base-stealing efficiency, he could become a pretty damn good player though.

Something along the lines of how you develop prospects

Maybe pick some teams that routinely produce good players and some teams that don’t. Break down their conditioning, strengthening, mental conditioning, philosophies… ect.

How would you pick minor leaguers for a fantasy league?

My fantasy league allows us to hold 10 (soon to be 15) players in the minor leagues. Would you go after high-ceiling players in the low minors? Top prospects in the high minors? New draft picks? International signings?

by MEF on Aug 20, 2010 2:14 PM EDT reply actions

I’d imagine a mix of everything, as that is what succeeds for the pros. Some high-upside guys pan out, and some don’t. Same with high-floor, lower ceiling type players (more likely to succeed, less likely to be stars). It obviously depends on how many teams are in your league too and how big rosters are, because some high-floor guys might not break into your lineup, if you see what I mean. I’d also focus primarily on guys closest to the bigs, as they have shown that they have worked things out and are more likely to pan out.

Also

If you can only hold on to 15 guys, the ones closest to the majors will graduate and you can get new guys. So if you have a top 100 prospect whose ETA is 2013, he’s worth holding onto to. But it is probably better to have on whose ETA is 2011, because once he graduates, you can replace him with another prospect. I could easily see a team focused on more MLB ready prospects pumping out 1 or 2 additional prospects per season compared to a team that doesn’t care about ETA. The league I most care has huge unlimited minor league rosters, so the ETA thing is a non-factor over time (I still have Matt Walker of the Rays on my roster).

I think it would be cool to see “A Typical Day in the Life of John Sickels.” You don’t have to get into specifics (what type of cereal you eat, how long it takes you to brush your teeth, etc.) but tell us how you go about your day analyzing baseball.

by Dorn on Aug 20, 2010 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

I just started brushing my teeth routinely for 3 minutes at a time

a minute for the front, tops, and inside…. within two weeks my teeth are like 900 shades whiter. And used to brush for about a minute three times a day…. try it.

After the minor league season is over

I wouldn’t mind a recap/review of each section of the draft (how players are performing, stock up/down, etc…). Not of every player but pick maybe 10-20 from each area. Say round 1, than 2-5, 6-10, 11-20, 21-30, etc….

Another post along the lines of developing prospects...

…but I’d love your opinion on the top 5 organizations who deal with and develop prospects the best and the bottom 5 organizations. I’d love to hear your reasoning and how you think the best way to bring along young talent. Thx

Say Scheppers, Jake McGee, Teheran, etc…

Other notable-players review

When you did your preseason Top 20s, you followed up with a list of other notable players. It would be cool if you could write a review for them.

Under-radar prospects most likely to make an impact in 2011

Which minor leaguers who aren’t household names (at least here), guys who aren’t named Desmond Jennings or Jesus Montero, for example, are most likely to contribute in 2011?

A good example would be Mitch Moreland, who is getting a real audition now and is hitting well, small sample size noted. Moreland may not have the upside of the top-echelon prospects but he doesn’t have a lot standing between him and a starting job in a great hitters’ park – Cantu isn’t showing much and is in his final year of a contract and it appears the Rangers have given up on Chris Davis.
