Carlos Matis news

Apparently they are shutting him down for the season due to innings.

BJ Rains tweeted that Lunhow said they completed a “bug hurdle” last week in regards to getting him to the states, so I guess he should show up here next year?

Good pick-up for the Cubs; one of the Braves’ sleepers. Young, live arm, demonstrates some pitching aptitude.

live arm that has some problems with control. Excelled earlier in the year in relief role, was moved to starter, couldn’t make the adjustment, was moved back to relief. They were really trying to ease him into starting, and it didn’t go well. Even when he went back to the pen he still struggled with his control.

Scouting The Sally LOVED Lopez, thought he looked better than Arodys Vizcaino.

by mrkupe on Aug 18, 2010 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

High praise indeed.

Still, with the current rotation for the Braves and the bluechippers they have ahead of him, they can afford to get aggressive to give Bobby his ring. But like the Rangers, they better get to the playoffs and make some noise when they get there because stuff like losing Escobar and giving way arms with ceiling are the things that you say “what if” down the road if it doesn’t work out. I’m glad they are going all-in to go after Philadelphia and I’m glad that prospects are going out of the division to do it.

Counterpoint to the counterpoint

I saw that report earlier in the year and it was a very glowing report, so I went back to Mike’s site, and found a new report that is more up to date. He basically says that Lopez has some maturing to do mentally and needs quite a bit of refinement with his secondary offerings. He can definitely improve on those things, so good luck to him, I think it was a fair price for Lee and cash.

But if the Braves think he’s significantly better than Freeman is right now, it can be justified. I wouldn’t do that deal (I really like Lopez), but I understand why they did.

Manny Banuelos

hit 97 in the 1st inning, sitting 93-94 (according to Frankie Piliere). Could be a juiced gun, but that’s some nice velocity regardless even if it’s an mph or 2 fast.

http://www.theyankeeu.com

by lemonjello on Aug 18, 2010 7:16 PM EDT reply actions

last year at a game in Charleston scouts were saying that he had a 40 fastball, he was sitting 88-89. that’s a pretty crazy jump in velocity for a guy his size.

by SouthAtlanticLeagueFan on Aug 18, 2010 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

!

Multiple scouts (multiple guns) have him touching 97 according to Frankie P’s Twitter feed.

by anjichpa on Aug 18, 2010 9:44 PM EDT up reply actions

His stuff is very inconsistent; one scout noted when, seeing him twice in a week, Banuelos was around 87-90 mph in one start, and then never went below 90 the next. He has a tendency to flatten out his curveball.

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=9872

He’s small and unathletic… and mechanics are somewhat inconsistent. These are some of the reasons many think he profiles better in relief. When he has pitched in relief he’s been untouchable.

by alskor on Aug 18, 2010 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Talking to guys charting here. Theyre saying this is hardest Banuelos has thrown. Been sitting 92-94, 95 but the 96s 97s are new territory

by alskor on Aug 19, 2010 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions

do you know who else was 'small'?

Pedro Martinez

and things can happen physically in growth between a year for someone who’s born 1991. for pitchers, velocity certainly can jump as a result of natural growth, weight training, improved mechanics, etc. that’s why i want to stay away from earlier reports of a teenage pitcher because things might have changed. and even with ‘inconsistent mechanics’ last year, he put up great numbers and this year, he’s put up much better numbers as a 19 year old in A+; he will be 20 in AA next year, which is definitely young for league.

It IS possible for pitcher to have games that would result in better velocity spike than other games, but unless if Manny is overthrowing his arm out, it does seem to point that there’s a good velocity increase; there have been words that his avg. velocity went uptick to late80’s to early 90’s and has hit 94, 95.

I know you're not comparing them

but Pedro was a once in a generation type of pitcher. I just feel it’s a long shot for Manny, or someone else that size to handle a 200+ inning workload. It can happen, but the odds are against it.

This has been his best start since his promotion to AAA, where he’s been hit really REALLY hard (8 HR in 26.2 IP before this start). Other than the HRs, he’s been decent, so this is a good sign. He did give up 3 doubles though.

I'm listening to this game right now.

I can see why he’s not listed as a great prospect. The one time they gave fastball velocity that I heard he’s around 88-90MPH. Sound like he’s got some kind of tailing offspeed stuff that is getting righties out while he’s also pounding the strike zone relentlessly and getting more quick outs. The lower walk rate and slightly improved stuff may be helping him to fool the young guys at AA. It will be interesting to see what the vets at AAA do with his stuff.

He wasn't listed by Sickels as a serious prospect before this year.

Based on the season he’s had and Meyers’ injuries you have to consider putting him above Meyers now. I still think the ceiling is 3/4, though.

Tom Milone final line.
6.2IP, 1R, 8H, 0BB, 13K Season high for a Senator, and yep that includes Strasburg.
His stats have certainly improved his prospect status. I haven’t gotten a chance to go to Harrisburg tonight, but if there’s one guy I’d like to see in person for Harrisburg, Milone’s it. I chose to listen to his game over listening to the Nats because I wanted to see what he’s up to. It’s not just results. It’s also about scouting and I’d have to see what somebody who has seen him in person says before I’m all in on Milone.

by Daggerrrrrr on Aug 18, 2010 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions

i've followed milone a bit

i think he can succeed in the bigs, but there’s a few more arms in the nats system that i prefer as a future 3 to stras/z. Milone’s best case seems to be a late career Ted Lilly, a lefty with average stuff, average velocity, that locates and attacks. On some years, that may mean “3” level performance, on others, it may be fringe starter. But to me, he’s more in that Andy Sonnanstine class – you could use him as a starter for awhile, but the chances are high that guys will eventually pass him.

by toonsterwu on Aug 18, 2010 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Who are the "few" you prefer over Milone?

Peacock? Meyers? Maybe Morris? Can’t think of anybody in AAA. Hagerstown doesn’t have much to me and the guys below that are very far away to me.

On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.

by souldrummer on Aug 18, 2010 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions

well, i wasn't speaking just of prospects, more young arms

Detwiler would be easily ehad for me. i’ve always liked Meyers a bit more than most, and unless there’s reports to tell me otherwise, I still like him more than Milone. I like Peacock more than Meyers.

John Lannan should be around for a couple more seasons, and I like him over Milone as of now, but both are similar end of the rotation lefties imo.

and then for the out of left field one … i think i still like jeff mandel more than tom milone. that one is probably limited to me.

this isn’t to say i don’t like tom milone – i think he can be a starter in the bigs.

as a total side note, half curious what their plan with chuck james is. wouldn’t mind seeing him get another shot in the rotation, as he did in syracuse earlier this year.

by toonsterwu on Aug 19, 2010 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Hard to compare Milone to guys like Detwiler, Meyers and Lannan to me until we see him in AAA. Milone does have the advantage of answering the bell consistently and pitching healthy this year. Meyers and Detwiler have not. I haven’t seen or listened to any of Peacock’s starts so I can’t comment too much on him outside of the high K rate but high ERA as well. They’ve had Mandel relieving mostly as of late in Syracuse. I don’t know if that’s an innings count issue of if that’s the role that they envision for him.

As far as Chuck James goes, I think they are serious about converting him to a reliever. He’s been very good in that role for Harrisburg. Syracuse’s rotation is probably going to be pretty full next year with guys like Millone deserving promotion at least Martis being likely to stay and some of the AAAA young guys like Atilano and Mock ending up in AAA. Nats have an abundance of back end talent and have to make wise decisions.

Milone’s to be commended for meeting all of the challenges this year. He’s kind of defied expectations to me this year, and I’ll be interested to see if he continues to defy expectations up a level next year.

On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.

by souldrummer on Aug 19, 2010 1:52 AM EDT up reply actions

fair enough

my initial comment was how i thought there were better options as the number 3 to stras/z, hence why i bring up guys like detwiler. but it isn’t really a fair comparison.

i like what i know of peacock. good arm, still working through some inconsistencies, but long run, i’d take a gamble on his stuff.

Always liked Mandel more than most.

The McNutter keeps rolling

6 shutout, 1 hit, 6 K’s. 6:5 GO/FO. There’s some concerns from small sample size in A+ (increased flyball rate), but if this control development is “real”, and if he can add an improved changeup in the winter, watch out. Heck, I think there’s a case that he’s the top arm in the Cubs system, and considering Archer’s season, that’s hard to imagine (still have Archer ahead, just think there’s a case).

LeMahieu, Flaherty, Ridling had big days for Daytona.

Heard anything on what the Cubs have planned for Cash$? I still believe he is the top starting pitcher in the system, but have no idea why he is still working in the pen, in what amounts as a lost season…I guess maybe an innings limit for him?

by St.Steve on Aug 18, 2010 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

well

the general indications are that they still plan on trying him as a starter next year (this year, probably an innings/days pitched/recent struggles issue), but I’ admit, I am somewhat worried on that front. they have 5 possible starters (not saying 5 better, just 5 possible) with Dempster, Wells, Gorzelanny, Silva, and Zambrano), and noticeably, Casey Coleman got a start today (granted, timing is everything). All the indications are that Cashner will be given a chance to win a job in spring, as of now, but … you never know, particularly if the pen has issues (granted, he has struggled out of the pen, so maybe that impacts their mind).

by mrkupe on Aug 18, 2010 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

i know

some folks think that the cubs may give him a rotation shot in the spring, but i tend to think he’s going to be given a look in the pen. he seems to be settling down a tad, and they finally developed a solid 2nd offering, so a decent mlb career may still happen.

by toonsterwu on Aug 18, 2010 11:15 PM EDT up reply actions

the pen struggles

really amount to two awful performances, back-2-back I believe, when he was terribly ill and probably shouldn’t have been pitching-fwiw. Though the walks have been a little meh…

What he was doing to in AA and then AAA as a starter was plain awesome, and it was a very shortsighted move by the cubs to bring him up to help their pen…Not as bad as the Mejia situation, but the Cubs were damn near out of it [and not headed in the right way], and could have found somebody else instead of jerking with their best pitching prospect.

by St.Steve on Aug 18, 2010 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions

i don't disagree

i don’t like what happened, although it should be noted that cashner was racking up innings at such a fast rate that he would’ve likely had to move to the pen at some point anyways, but no, i hated that decision.

What made it worse was that they jerked two guys around in those few weeks, with the Jay Jackson moves.

Isn’t he still wielding a plus fastball? I thought that was what the last guy who’d seen him around here said. If so, he’s still got a floor as a solid reliever and he’ll probably regain either enough control or breaking ball command at some point to still be a solid prospect. I still believe too. I’m a Nats fan so I’m not rooting for the guy, but I still think he’ll be a solid pitcher.

heard the fastball is is good as ever. think kupe had him 92-95. and it’s got sink of course. i went against consensus opinion over the winter and had Crow as KC’s #1, i f’in loved him. really hope he can get back on track.

I was kind of bothered on the Federal Baseball today.

Wilson Ramos got a callup because Wil Nieves is on paternity leave. People are pronouncing him the second coming real early. He’s still not drawing walks. Likewise, people are really quick to just look at Crow’s stats an immediately proclaim us winners for letting him walk and picking up Storen. Personally, I feel the whole episode was a lose-lose for both sides regardless of how Crow and Storen end up. At best it’s bad process good results for the Nats, and I think that Crow will contribute for KC either as a reliever or a bounce back starter.

On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park. In Rizzo and Ramos we trust.

Command has been his issue

He fastball and slider have been plus pitches this year and his change-up is useable according to scouting reports, but his command has dogged him this year.

I wonder how much of that is related to just being rusty after not pitching for an entire year. He could be a big bounce back candidate in 2011.

I’m a Giants fan, and I like him more than most, but I’m pretty sure he doesn’t get as much love as you think he should for reasons other than the organization he plays for.

I’m sure people are skeptical of his rise from low round draft pick to a top prospect but he mashes, has hit for avg, walks, and was voted best defensive 1b in the midwest league. He also can stay in the OF ( most likely) left. He made the jump to AA and is continuing to mash with a minimal jump in k% (21.2 to 22.6).

Obviously he has some flaws but he just hits, and hits with homerun power.

by npurcell on Aug 19, 2010 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

exactly

people are skeptical of guys who have this sort of meteoric rise, whose entire value lies in their bat. I really like his bat, which is why I am somewhat high on Sands, but others haven’t bought into the kool aid yet, which is why he isn’t as highly touted as some other prospects

I know he doesn’t play a premium up the middle position and he’s relegated to the wrong end of the defensve spectrum, but he plays those positions well.

but he plays those positions well.

Really? Everything I’ve read put him as a below-average corner OF, and an average at best 1B. I’m not saying I disagree, that’s just not what I’ve read so far.

he was voted to be the best defensive 1b in the midwest league by BA (if you have the subscription)

as for the outfield, reports will come out at the end of the season. detailed responses from announcers and beat writers of his minor league teams who seem him every day all say he plays a good LF with a good arm.

Is that really a great accomplishment though?

I mean, it’s nice that he was voted the best defender at 1B, but it’s still the least valuable defensive position and it’s still Low A ball. I haven’t read the MWL writeup yet, so I’m not sure how glowing the reports on Sands but I’m not sure how great any of his competition would be for that honor.

right

It’s certainly better than being panned, but I’d be wary of letting him get TOO much mileage on that one distinction. Being one of the best (or maybe the best) defenders at a position in a league might mean you can be a true plus defender in the majors . . .or it might mean you’re just average.

Was decent enough in April/May, but has fallen apart since. Basically the total opposite of what you’d want to see in somebody who had so much to learn about pitching in the first place . . .you’d think the really awful stuff would come at the beginning.

He just seems so very, very raw. Wonder what he would look like right now had he gone as a 3B as originally anticipated.
