Is it just me?

Or does Boston have one HELL of a minor league system? I am by no meens a Boston guy but, I look at a guy like Lavarnway and that looks like a pretty good ballplayer – and he’s 14th!

The guy who really impressed – and surprised – me when I was looking at EL prospects was Yamaico Navarro? Some pop, draws some walks, and defense is supposed to be his strong suit

Nice list Bud. You must REALLY love the Sox!

Agreed

I actually despise the Redsox but Theo and company always seem to do a good job of restocking their system. I really like Oscar Tejada and could see him shoot up the rankings next year.

KBR

Is shooting up the Analyst rankings ‘round here as well ! :-)
Hey, I’m goin to see Micheal Pineda vs Jordan Lyles tomorrow! Pretty cool huh?

That is a sick matchup

I am more of a Pineda believer, but Lyles keeps on proving people wrong.

It's not just you....

I think they’re years ahead of most teams in player development….the Yankees have been trying to catch up for 4-5 years in that area but Boston just gets player development….obviously money helps them take risks (Younginer was one of my favorites from the ‘09 draft) but any other team can take those same risks…they just don’t.

by SenorGato on Aug 14, 2010 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, Boston just realized that they can sign like 8-10 overslot guys

And by doing so their farm system will essentially always have solid depth and see a couple of those overslot guys emerge as top prospects each year.

Every big-market team (ahem, Mets, Cubs, etc.) should be spending huge on the draft.

I like baseball.

by Satchel Price on Aug 14, 2010 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah but for various reasons (injuries, terrible luck) the overslot deals haven't had as much of an impact as you would expect

Rizzo, Westmoreland, and Austin Bailey have all had career-threatening injuries. I can’t think of any overslot picks that have had significant impacts in the last few years (was Kalish overslot?). That the farm is still solid is pretty impressive.

by Hillstop on Aug 14, 2010 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Kalish was overslot

The overslot picks could have had an impact by now. Kelly and Anderson both received huge signing bonuses and could have been the centerpieces of trades to bring in major league talent (although Anderson’s value has been dinged).

6 of the top 10 prospects listed here were drafted. Of those 6, 5 were overslot. Without those players, the system isn’t nearly as pretty.

by mrkupe on Aug 14, 2010 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Ok, but that’s to their credit – they’re willing to spend and it’s proven to be effective. Good for them for being aggressive.

I don't think I said it wasn't

I was merely responding to the suggestion that the opposite was true, that the overslot deals haven’t had a major impact on the system.

Thanks!

I do this list for my website every so often, so I just post it here too

..I think this system is really overrated, speaking as a Red Sox fan.

Kelly’s upside is MOR, and Kalish, while perhaps moving in as a first division corner outfielder, certainly isn’t the prototype.

Rizzo and Iglesias are both, IMO, pretty overrated, given one plays a bat-first position without a premium bat and the other just doesn’t have much bat projection.

I do like the bonus babies that are stashed in the system but there’s not a ton here right now..

by WrenFGun on Aug 14, 2010 2:46 PM EDT reply actions

Not sure on iglesias

have not seen him much.
But Rizzo is far from over-rated

Talk about a pessimist

Rizzo has hit 16 home runs in AA mostly as a 20 year who missed a development year. Iglesias is hard to get a read on since he missed so much time but he did pretty well in his short time playing and is raking for Lowell in his rehab stint.

Ive seen

Rizzo about a gazillion times now, and to not be optimistic about this kid you have to be a Yankee fan in denial.
Seriously, this kid is the farm system’s best

Beacuse

Kelly and Kalish have higer upsides.
I believ Rizzo will be the best, but right now those tow guys rank higher

Some guys get over rated

I do think some guys individually get over rated (though the guys you mentioned I mostly like). The top ten here I think is just OK. But the next 20 are pretty impressive for depth.

I think I disagree with everything stated here, and disagree strongly with most.

Umm...

In the top 10, maybe 8. I heard today that he may have more upside than Kelly, but I havnt seen him pitch yet.
Not sure completely.

Easily Top 5

I’m not enamored with most of the players in the system right now and there’s no way I’d rank Anderson above Ranaudo.

Agree on that

Im not a Lars guy, I ranked him higher than I wanted too

thirty-one isn’t THAT close to top 20. I hear you, though. The guy is on fire right now.

I really don't understand

Why he isn’t in Salem. I hate to be that fan who always bitches about promotions but he more than deserves a shot.

Well, he has just heated up as of late. The good news is, he’s got a Trayvon Robinson line going right now. The bad news is, this includes the strikeout rate. They may want him to refine his contact before promoting him. Even now that he’s heated up, he’s still on the cusp of one strikeout every 3.5 at bats. That’s too many, even if he is slugging over .600 in the second half.

I like Rizzo a lot

Worried about his k:bb rate, but he is only 20. I like the competition with Anderson. Should be interesting to see.

Westmoreland

I realize he’s nearly impossible to project at this point, but with the best tools in the system (even acknowledging a low probability) I think you have to find a place for Westy on this list.

by FI2 on Aug 15, 2010 1:57 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

If not for his situation

Id have him at #2

i understand

I’m just saying the upside alone, however long the odds, justifies putting him on the list somewhere, even if it’s 50.

It’s a minor point.

by FI2 on Aug 16, 2010 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Lin-Ibarra vs Fuentes-Vitek-Brentz

Excellent list. Just a few minor beefs. I have Lin and Ibarra about 10 spots higher and Vitek-Fuentes-Brentz about 8-10 spots lower. I guess I put more weight on a 4+ million dollar signing bonus then I do a late first round draft choice.

Brentz has been awful with the bat this year and that was all he had going for him. I am concerned about Fuentes lack of walks. Vitek is OK, but doesn’t seem to have a lot of upside or a position. And he is striking out a lot.

Ibarra stats in Cuba were very pretty. I like Ibarra.

Lin may be their best defensive prospect. Great strike zone management. Young for every league he has played in. Coming on strong latelly in AA. Only power is lacking and since he is a defensive CF, that isn’t that important.

The Red Sox top 20 are as strong as any in baseball.

by KMav on Aug 15, 2010 5:26 PM EDT reply actions

I really, really like

Vitek after seeing him a few times. Brentz has not looked good, but I like his raw talent and his tools, so Im not terribly worried about him.
I like Lin a lot, but not as much as you do. I need a little more offense and discipline

if Vitek, Fuentes, and Brentz are all 8-10 spots lower than they're represented on this list

That’s a sign that the Red Sox have REALLY botched their last two drafts. Of course, I don’t think too many people feel that way, and all three are pretty good prospects.

by mrkupe on Aug 15, 2010 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Missing

Were is Henry Ramos and Xander Bogaerts?

Henry is racking down in the GCL and deserves to be at least in the lower have of the top 50 and Xander is racking over in the DSL and should be state side next year. I would definetly take them over anyone ranked under Junichi Tazwa on this list.

I like but I want to see a little more of him
