All three are lefties that don’t throw very hard and live off the effective use of cutters and curves. Furthermore, Buerhle & Pettitte are known to shut down the opposing running game, and similarly Niese has yet to allow a stolen base this year. I know that Buerhle & Pettitte have amazing pickoff moves. I honestly don’t know if Niese has a good one or not. The fact that Niese hasn’t allowed a stolen base makes believe that his pickoff move might be half decent (not saying its anywhere near Buerhle/Pettitte level).
Anyways, here is a statistical comparison of the three at their age 23 seasons in the majors:
Andy Pettitte:4.17 ERA, 4.01 FIP, 1.41 WHIP, 5.86 K/9, 3.24 BB/9, 1.81 K/BB
Mark Buehrle:3.58 ERA, 4.00 FIP, 1.24 WHIP, 5.05 K/9, 2.30 BB/9, 2.20 K/BB
Jonny! Niese: 3.50 ERA, 4.11 FIP, 1.35 WHIP, 7.14 K/9, 3.00 BB/9, 2.38 K/BB
So what do you guys think? Is it fair to compare Niese to Buerhle and/or Pettitte in terms of his long-term potential? I believe they all have similar approaches on the mound (relying heavily on cutters), and have posted comparable numbers at the same age at/near the beginning of their MLB careers.
I’d love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!
