Top 20 Pre-Season 2010 Texas Rangers Prospects in Review
2010 Texas Rangers Top 20 Prospects in Review
Here is a review of the 2010 Rangers prospect list, originally published January 6, 2010. THIS IS A REVIEW OF THE OLD LIST AND PRE-SEASON GRADES. THIS IS NOT A NEW LIST. The 2011 list and new grades won't be ready until the season is over and I start writing the book.
1) Neftali Feliz, RHP, Grade A: 29 saves, 3.50 ERA, 50/13 K/BB in 46 major league innings. Quite good, only question now is does he start or relieve in the long run?
2) Justin Smoak, 1B, Grade A-: .198/.288/.336 in 298 major league at-bats, traded to the Mariners. That's pretty ugly. I have been high on Smoak since his days at South Carolina, and while I have not given up on him yet, he really can't afford another season like this.
3) Martin Perez, LHP, Grade A-: 5.87 ERA, 88/44 K/BB in 87 innings for Double-A Frisco, 100 hits. Reports I have from Texas League sources say he just looks overmatched and has no real business at this level. Just 19 years old. Now on DL with a strained back.
4) Tanner Scheppers, RHP, Grade B+: 4.12 ERA in 55 innings for Triple-A Oklahoma City, 57/21 K/BB, 57 hits. Sharp splits in role: 2.70 ERA in 30 relief innings, 38/13 K/BB. 5.84 ERA in 25 starting innings, 19/8 K/BB. I'm not surprised by these splits.
5) Wilmer Font, RHP, Grade B: 4.35 ERA in 79 innings combined between Low-A Hickory and High-A Bakersfield, 85/45 K/BB, 73 hits. On disabled list with elbow problems. Strong K/IP ratios point to his plus stuff, but command and now health are issues.
6) Michael Main, RHP, Grade B: 3.45 ERA in 91 innings for Bakersfield, 72/21 K/BB, 87 hits. Traded to the Giants, has been murdered in Double-A, 13.83 ERA, 21 hits in 13.2 innings, awful 7/14 K/BB.
7) Mitch Moreland, 1B-OF, Grade B-: .289/.371/.484 for OKC, 47/63 BB/K in 353 at-bats. 7-for-25 in the majors so far. While he doesn't have the pure homer power of a classic corner player, his bat is polished and I think he will surprise people.
8) Kasey Kiker, LHP, Grade B-: 7.65 ERA, 42/46 K/BB in 40 innings for Frisco. Complete collapse in his command ratios is highly suspicious, and he's been on the disabled list twice this year with both elbow and shoulder problems. I thought he was underrated coming into the season, but he's really messed up right now.
9) Robbie Ross, LHP, Grade B-: 2.59 ERA, 62/20 K/BB in 94 innings for Low-A Hickory, 4.28 ERA, 25/9 K/BB in 27 innings for Bakersfield. 2.78 combined GO/AO ratio. I like him.
10) Danny Gutierrez, RHP, Grade C+: Just 22.1 innings of work between Hickory and Bakersfield, 4.43 ERA, 11/9 K/BB, 32 hits. Lost much of the season due to drug suspension because he didn't bother getting a waiver for his Adderall prescription.
11) Engel Beltre, OF, Grade C+: .331/.376/.460 for Bakersfield, .290/.346/.419 for Frisco. 13 steals on the year in 22 attempts, 17/39 BB/K in 356 at-bats. Still has remarkable tools, and has made some progress with his skills this year. Strikeout rate is low, but walk rate is even lower. His stock has risen with me but I'm not 100% sold yet.
12) Guillermo Moscoso, RHP, Grade C+: 5.46 ERA, 81/44 K/BB in 97 innings for OKC, 118 hits. He was much more effective at the same level in 2009. I think he would fit better as a reliever.
13) Max Ramirez, C, Grade C+: .268/.340/.331 in 36 games for OKC, .217/.341/.348 in 28 games in the majors. His power has completely vanished. If it doesn't come back, his status as a prospect is finished.
14) Miguel Velazquez, OF, Grade C+: .283/.350/.443 with 13 steals, 14 homers between Hickory and Bakersfield. Adapting well to full-season ball, tools are impressive but patience is a concern.
15) Omar Poveda, RHP, Grade C+: Tommy John surgery. Traded to Marlins.
16) Blake Beavan, RHP, Grade C+: 2.78 ERA in 110 innings for Frisco, 68/12 K/BB. Traded to Seattle, has pitched 29 innings between Double-A and Triple-A, with a 13/5 K/BB but 35 hits and 22 runs allowed. I love the control, but the low strikeout rate is very worrisome for me.
17) Carlos Pimentel, RHP, Grade C+: 4.82 ERA, 97/56 K/BB in 121 innings, 134 hits allowed for Bakersfield. Young at age 20. Sharp platoon splits, and much more effective on the road than at home. I think he can improve next year.
18) Robbie Erlin, LHP, Grade C+: 2.06 ERA, 100/15 K/BB in 96 innings for Hickory, 71 hits. I love this guy.
19) Tommy Mendonca, 3B, Grade C+: .233/.315/.348 in 97 games for Bakersfield. Unable to replicate college power production, fanned 105 times.
20) Vince DiFazio, C, Grade C+: Has been limited to 47 games by injury, split between AZL rehab, four games for Bakersfield, and 38 for Hickory. But they have been a good 47 games: .280/.391/.530. He's 24 but I still see him as an intriguing sleeper.
Feliz has been everything that could have reasonably been expected. I love Erlin, Beltre and Ross have made substantial progress, Moreland has been solid, and Scheppers has been excellent at times. But there are some serious disappointments here, too, and I don't like the pitching injuries. I'll be honest here and say I don't think the Rangers are really going to miss Beavan and Main all that much, but trades and injuries have thinned the system and some recharging is needed.

frisco guys
Love Engel Beltre. Love him.
Perez has had some bad stretches, but I wouldn’t call him “overmatched”. I think he’d probably be working the Cal League pretty well if he was there. The problem is that they sent him to Frisco for the whole year rather than sending him to the Cal and THEN promoting him to Frisco later.
Yep
last I checked he had a 4.01 FIP. That’s very respectable for a 19 year old in AA.

Big decision on Feliz
What they do with him will be a major move. They must feel like they’ve got some starting pitching depth, with wilson, hunter, feldman, lewis, and holland (and maybe cliff lee), which would lead me to think they keep Neftali in the closer role, where he has been pretty good. The old “don’t fix it if it ain’t broke” theory.
I’d be disappointed to never see if he could be a dominant front end guy though, his stuff is fun to watch.
Feliz
I would love to see what he could do as a starter as well. My guess would be, they let him try to win a rotation spot in spring.

Jon Daniels said Feliz might close in 2011 and 2012
and then get a chance to be in the rotation after that. I think they wanna make sure he’s well adjusted before making the transition to the rotation.

Hmm
That seems like a long time. I don’t think they’d have anything to lose by letting him go for it next spring.

Especially with Ogando
starting to solidify himself as a shut down reliever

Matt Thompson
John, what info do you have on Matt Thompson. He has great K rates but gives up a lot of hits at the same time. Is he a a borderline top 10 guy in this system?
A new Dallas Sports Blog- http://thebigdsports.blogspot.com/
I think Feliz settles in the pen long term eventually. Maybe they give him a chance to start but I think he ends up back in the pen. With some of the other arms they have, I think his chances are better now of sticking as a SP but we will see.
I think Smoak should get some slack for the season he has had. While it is pretty bad, he has showed periods of pretty good play which makes me think he has the ability, just needs to put it together. Hopefully he doesn’t perceive the trade as the Rangers losing confidence in him. I tend to think such things don’t affect athletes on this level but who knows.
Perez deserves a pass, still has everything you want in a SP in terms of ability.
I think Scheppers definitely ends up in the pen but he is one of those guys who may help get Feliz back into the rotation.
I don’t know a ton about the rest. Velazquez is a guy people seem to be split on. I’ll have to keep an eye on him.
We will see how the system looks after the signing deadline but is this system even close to what it was last year? I know there are an awful lot of Ranger fans that come through this site any time John posts a piece on their organization, some of them are definitely biased but you will get that. Will be interesting to see their placement on organizational rankings.
Beat me to it...
If Brad Pitt is playing Beane who do you want playing you?
JD: Eddie Guardado.

The organization doesn't like him at catcher.
Pitchers don’t like throwing to him and FO doesn’t trust his defense.
Jurickson Profar?
I know he wasn’t on the list, but what is the consensus with this kid? Could he potentially be the Rangers’ #3 prospect behind Perez and Scheppers next year? Is he up there with guys like Font and Beltre?
I'd say Profar is right there in the top 5
I’d be interested in Sickels assessment of guys like Alfaro, Sardinas, Skole. Kirkman established himself in AAA and Matt Thompson, although getting hit a lot, has great stuff as seen in his 116 Ks/ 21 BBs in 114 IP in low A.
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Kirkman
will be an interesting one to rank. C+ prospect?

Potentially, but doubtful
I think he’ll be too young to beat out Beltre and maybe Font or Erlin. He’s in the discussion though…

I'd have him definitely top 4 and above Font
I have to think about Profar vs. Beltre… not sure what i’m going to do with Beltre… but definitely leaning Profar.

I love Font
but I agree. With the DL stint Font has to be considered a risk and Profar seems to be a special case. I’m not 100% sold on Beltre but he’s reworked his hitting mechanics and has done very well for himself in Double-A considering he doesn’t turn 21 until November. The walk rate is cautionary, but he’s become really tough to strike out this year. Tough guy to go for or against but I’ll lean Beltre over Profar to balance you. lol

I actually like Font more than most, too (I think)
Font was #99 on my top 100 this year… but Profar was #60. I was a huge Beltre guy but soured on him some in 09. Just not sure where to place him yet…

Cool
the Font Minority. lol
That’s an aggressive grade on Profar based on scant performance, but the scouting reports are glowing so I can see it. Nothing to complain about this year either. Spokane at 17? Impressive.
Have you seen Beltre’s new swing? I think it might sweeten things up again for you. I’m interested to see how the power develops.

I like Font
but I put Profar over Beltre since he has an advanced approach at the plate for his age compared to Beltre
A baseball game is simply a nervous breakdown divided into nine innings.
Before this year
I’d have agreed maybe, but mostly because Beltre had a lot of unnecessary movement at the plate and struggled to make contact. He’s reworked the stance and it shows, as he’s cut his strikeouts drastically and is hitting for average at levels where he’s quite young. Profar looks great, but Beltre’s improvements make it a competition imo. It’s hard to cite Profar’s ARL while ignoring Beltre’s. I think they’ve both got a lot of growing to do.

And of course
Profar doesn’t appear to have sparked any game-ending riots in his young career, so he’s got that going for him. lol

I'd probably have Beltre at No. 3
He is just so crazy talented that it’s hard not to have him that high. He could be an excellent, excellent player if he wants it.
You've seen him
in person, right? It seems like people who’ve watched him this year come away pretty impressed.

Ogando
@ John: Would you have slotted Ogando on this list had he been definitely America-eligible heading into the year? Kid’s looked nasty in the Rangers ’pen of late. Thanks!

hard to say

Smoak
Most of the ugliness in Smoak’s line is due to an unsustainably low BABIP. Other than that, his season to date looks very similar to Ike Davis’s. I don’t think 10 HR/43BB/80Ks in about a half season worth of games is a particularly discouraging line for someone in only their second full year of professional ball.
by Randolph314 on Aug 11, 2010 4:07 PM EDT reply actions 1 recs
Agreed
I really wish his BABIP had been at least reasonably normal. Then the Rangers wouldn’t have even thought about including him in the Lee trade.
I feel that the Rangers will live to regret the Lee trade a couple of years from now.
Scheppers assessment
He was working on specific pitches when he was starting, not just trying to get guys out, so I think that assessment of him as a starter is grossly premature.

+1
Beat writers have mentioned he was really trying to work on his changeup among other things – to get away from the fastball/slider mentality he had as a reliever.
Considering his inexperience, it’s much too soon to pigeonhole his role based on a such a small sample size anyways.

Neil Ramirez
Any thoughts on him? He’s always had good stuff, but this year, repeating lo-A, he’s slowly starting to put it all together. The ERA isn’t great and the hit-rate could improve, but his k/bb is right around 4. He’s shown an increase in K’s and a significant decrease in walks and while he’s 21, he’s not distinctly old for the league.
Does anyone have any recent scouting reports on him?
