Starting vs. relieving in terms of injury risk
I’d like to gather some opinions on this. It’s a question that comes up in regards to Scheppers often, and over at Lone Star Ball we’ve thrown it around a bit concerning CJ Wilson as he went into the rotation this year.
Which is more stressful on the arm?
Starting – you’re throwing more pitches/innings, but you are on a regular and predictable schedule of rest and work.
Relieving – fewer innings/pitches, but especially for late innings guys the innings are higher leverage, more stressful, and the work is irregular, pitching 2, 3 days in a row, warming up perhaps even more often.
I’d think that you’d want to treat pitchers as individuals on this, of course, regardless of their repertoire. What is the nature of their health questions? How repeatable is their delivery/how sound are their mechanics? etc. etc. etc.
Freude schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Freude!
One opinion
I seem to remember John Smoltz always complaining that relieving was more taxing on his arm.

Interesting
since he logged so many innings doing both. My inclination is to think the starter’s regular schedule and less hanging it all out in high leverage situations mostly mitigates the number of innings/pitches.
Freude schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Freude!
That's strange
Because the consensus since forever is that if you have a guy that develops arm trouble year-in-and-year-out as a starter that you move him to the pen to ease the strain.
Also, I would take whatever Smoltz said about closing with a huge grain of salt. Remember, he hated closing because he never knew what days he’s be pitching. He always wanted to get back to starting so that he could play golf 5-6 days a week on the days he wasn’t pitching.

Jordan Zimmerman
Is making his second rehab start today.
Good start
He struck out the side in the first with 1 hit.
Another walk for Norris...
Ackley at catcher with power? :)
Norris
0-2, 2BB, 1K, 3R
Appears Frederick wasn’t too moved to pitch to him.
So Burgess, the man who only hits in Frederick raked.

On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
Finished
3 innings, 1 hit, 0 bbs and 5 k’s
Excited about Zimmerman...
I really like him, and am happy to see his rehab is going so well. Having Zim pitch as the #2 behind Stras is really good for the Nats.
now if they could score some runs.

Zimmermann sounded real, real solid. Hopefully, they'll give some more specific data during the Nats broadcast.
30strikes, 15balls in 45 pitches today.
I think they’ll be able to score by the time their plan comes to fruition. 3-4-5 is fine. It’s Nyjer Morgan possibly being swapped out, Guzman going out to pasture, and Desmond growing up that will help them out. RF is still kind of question mark as well. Bring up Espinosa and Norris by 2012, resign Dunn and extend Hammer, and add one more piece or an ahead of schedule Bryce Harper and 2012 for respectability and 2013 for contention is possible. They’ve got to get it done in that window, though. Zimmerman (3B)’s only signed through 2013.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
I hope the Nats make the right moves...
to compete in a couple of years…
Here’s more on Zim’s start, love the velocity!
News: Nationals SP Jordan Zimmermann, who recorded five strikeouts and allowed just one hit in three innings in his second rehab start for Class A Potomac on Thursday, told MASNSports.com he’s aiming to return by September. Zimmermann, who’s recovering from Tommy John surgery, felt great in the rehab outing, consistently hitting the mid-90s with his fastball and topping out at 96 miles per hour, but he’s still a few starts away. “I felt ten times better today than I did in my last start,” he said. “The location was way better today than my last start. I was locating for the most part all day long. I was coming inside and it was pretty much there all the time. I felt the off speed stuff and everything else was working well too.”

This makes me happy
Both for Zimmermann and for the fantasy teams I’ve stashed him on the DL all year long.

no injury
scratched so he can pitch in the futures game this weekend
Anyone think Ronald Uviedo is a 'prospect'?
If so, why?
If not, why not?
Also, what is the board consensus on what an appropriate GB/FB ratio is in terms of a reliever? And, what is generally considered ‘too old’ for High-A, ‘just right’, and ‘young for his level’?
I am having a discussion with a pretty knowledgeable guy on Bucs Dugout but I think he is overselling Uviedo as a prospect, while using some pretty dubious GB/FB ratio-numbers to state his case, along with K/IP.
Just searching for some consensus/information…..
Thanks, fellas.

Fringe prospect who should have never ever been dealt for a guy about to be DFA'd
Probably won’t be a starter long term, but should be a solid out of the bullpen. He’s a C+ for me. Deplorable trade.
Fabio Martinez
Anybody have any idea what kind of stuff he throws? I noticed he is striking out 12.6 per 9 innings but also walking a tonne.

Really good stuff
In the off-season, the word was an “effortless” 93-96 mph FB with projection, a plus slider, and a potentially plus change up. BA just had a report which said, I believe (don’t have this with me): 93-94 mph FB, touching 98 with some movement, and a slider that at least flashes plus, and a changeup that isn’t there yet.
TheSouthWing.com - A Magazine of essays, prose and poems
Does Gio throw that hard?
Plus, isn’t Gio’s out pitch a curve?
R.I.P. cwhitman412, Frederick0220, & Mets2k9
by King Billy Royal on Jul 8, 2010 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions
at Gio's peak he was sitting around there
but yes, his out pitch was a curve ball that was always more refined when compared to FMB’s slider.
Yeah
Gio used to have more gas.
I meant the comparison more in terms of guys with wicked stuff but very limited command. Gio has sort of figured it out (it comes and goes) and I wonder if FMM will ever get to that point (decent #3 type with high Ks and BBs). I wonder if the control issues come from failing to repeat his mechanics, just not knowing where stuff is going, or something else.
Come to think of it, that’s an interesting question. How do pitchers develop command/control, what causes it to be poor, and how do they improve?
I think FMM's also comes and goes
If you want to be optimistic, you can look at the 5 or so games where he’s shown legitimately solid control. In those 5, he’s struck out 40 and walked only 9, in 31 IP. The obvious flip-side to that is that in his other 11 games, he’s struck out 75, and walked 50 in 51 IP.
Two things; first, obviously he’s still only 20, so there’s plenty of time for him to figure out where the plate is. Second, and I hesitate to even mention this because of SSS and all, but as it happens, three of those 5 starts with solid control have been his last three starts. (21:6 K:BB over 18 IP).
(BTW, I don’t know if Gio is your best comp here – his control was actually good in the lower minors. It took a significant step back in the past year or two. Also, with a few exceptions, he rarely showed the same stuff in the sense of a high K rate as FMM. In terms of stats, he looks a little bit more like Jeremy Jeffress to me)
TheSouthWing.com - A Magazine of essays, prose and poems
He’s basically something like a junior version of Carlos Marmol or Edinson Volquez, from what I’ve seen. One of my favorite prospects though.
I like him a lot too
I have no idea if he’ll ever turn into anything, but it’s kind of exciting to see a prospect with virtually unlimited potential.
TheSouthWing.com - A Magazine of essays, prose and poems
Could this be the final start in Montgomery for Alex Torres
he is gotta be due for a call up to Durham soon I would imagine.
still walks too many
and been trending the wrong way as the season has gone on. i would not approve of a promotion, FWIW (nothing).
R.I.P. cwhitman412, Frederick0220, & Mets2k9
Walks have been troublesome but he has only given up 1 HR in his last 53 innings
and 4 all season which is encouraging.
true
there are a lot of positives. i’d just like to see him improve on the free passes.

There’s a near-certain chance of heavy rain in San Antonio this evening, so that game might not happen and we might be looking at a double-header for tomorrow.
Whenever they play, I’ll be there, so feel free to add me on Twitter at @mr_kupe for some in- and post-game notes. I’ll also be in attendance in Round Rock on Sunday as Blake Beavan makes his AAA debut for Oklahoma City.

You shouldn't have
Montero and Alvarez don’t provide anywhere near as much defensive value. Now, if you ranked him ahead of Carlos Santana, then I’d disagree.
if your rankings were based on how well these players would do in the last three weeks, then you would be totally vindicated. however, you were more likely basing your rankings on your forecasts about their careers. and in that case, i will say it’s too soon to pat yourself on the back.

Death by small sample size. I like Posey and think he’ll be good, but thats a big claim to make based on this weeks games. The name Vin Mazzarro jumps to mind. Remember that jackass that made all those obnoxious threads last year…
i claimed it last year
why would i change my mind? and vin mazarro and buster posey are comparable talent-wise. [no]
Not saying
your a bandwagon jumper or anything like that – just saying that it’s too early to say you were absolutely right just yet. I know Mazarro and Posey aren’t the same level… it just reminded me of those threads was all.
How's Bengie Molina doing for Texas?
Just sayin’
Kind of the defintion of addition by subtraction.
On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.
Good description but your details are fuzzy. Posey didn’t actually replace Molina in the lineup, since he was already playing almost daily at 1B before the trade. What the trade did do was keep melon-head Bochy from starting Molina 6 times a week, and gave extra ABs to Pat Burrell and Nate Schierholtz. That’s where the addition by subtraction came in.
Now if they can just use the same formula to get rid of Rowand they’d be sitting real pretty. How about it Cubs fans – Rowand for Zambrano plus you send us some cash?

3-5 double, run, rbi 1st game of DH.
Now batting .444 thru 14 games as an 18yr old in High A.
Darren Ford...I broke the law and the law won
Giants minor league outfielder Darren Ford surrendered to authorities in Vineland, New Jersey on Wednesday and was arrested on charges of theft and making a false police report.
Ford reported to police in November that he was robbed of a bank-deposit bag from the car dealership where he was employed. The 24-year-old outfielder impressed during spring training, but is batting just .233/.294/.346 with Double-A Richmond this season. The team announced that he will continue to play while his legal situation plays out.
Amazing
A Low-A pitcher walked someone. Amazing.

Totally unimpressive. With crappy Low-A pitchers giving him free passes and BB’s, and his totally inflated BABIP its like there is some conspiracy in the MWL to make him look better than he does. Unbelievable.

I wondered about the quick promotion. I think that it would have been best for him to just move up the coast to San Jose, instead of pushing him all the way to AA after the trade.

78 strikeouts
15 steals
7 caugt stealing
.222 average
.313 on base
.344 slugging

So are you recommending that we don’t debate whether a guy is going to be a good player or not? Isn’t that the point of this site; to debate the merits of certain prospects and whether they are likely to have future success?

c'mon
A daily updates thread about minor league prospects on a minor league prospects site is not the right place to debate whether or not a prospect appears to be fulfilling his initial potential, nor is it the place to speculate upon further development. I recommend we all step into cardboard boxes and wait there for three years, and then come back and pick up the conversation once most of the interesting variables have been put to rest. Until then: SILENCE!
Agreed on the first part
I will do a write up on Tim Beckham later.

I just spit up my milkshake reading that line — almost the cycle!
Cubs
Dewey already noted BJax night (he did have a CS). BJax 45 AB’s at AA – .356/.453/.578. So far, so good, but a long way to go. The positive thing for me is that, so far, it seems like AA pitching isn’t, for lack of a better word, fooling him, and that his solid eye is still there.
Other Cubs:
Rafael Dolis: 4.2 ip, 9 h, 4 bb, 6 K’s, 8:0 GO/FO, 2 run HR, 5 R’s given up, 2 unearned. Still believe he’s a potential late inning pen arm, so I take his inconsistent starts with a grain of salt.
Josh Vitters: 0/4, 2 K’s.
Casey Coleman: 7 ip, 4 h, 2 bb, 8:4 GO/FO, 6 K’s, 1 R.
Alberto Cabrera: 6 ip, 3 h, 2 bb, 4 R (3 unearned), 8:5 GO/FO. Electric arm righty (mid-90’s fb, solid slider, developing change) got off to a hot start but struggled in Tennessee. Got demoted when Archer was sent to AA. Little brother recently signed, I believe, with Atlanta.
DJ LeMahieu: 4/4, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI.
Ryan Flaherty (playing 3rd): 0/3, 1 RBI.
Kyler Burke: 2/4, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K. One of the bigger disappointments in the system this year.
Junior Lake: 1/3, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, E. Going to take some more time to make me a believer, but the toolsy kid has had a nice June/July run offensively.
Hak-Ju Lee: 0/3, 3 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP.
Logan Watkins: 1/3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 CS.
Jae-Hoon Ha: 2/5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 K, 1 SB. Had a nice homer at Wrigley yesterday. Has some power potential, and has some athleticism. Played CF tonight, but future is likely corner OF, so power development may be key.
Marcos Perez: 4.2 ip, 7 h (1 solo shot), 1 bb, 1 WP, 5:2 GO/FO, 6 K’s, 3 R, 1 ER. Don’t recall much right now on the young lefty’s arsenal, other than that he reportedly showed well at XST.
Kyung-Min Na: 1/3, 1 R, 1 2B. Speedy Korean got a fairly big bonus from the Cubs.
Micah Gibbs: 0/3, 1 RBI, 1 K. DH’d tonight.
Christian Friedrich
I think his elbow’s feeling better now after back to back dominant outings.

Lyles yes, MadBum no.
I can’t rationalize trading a 20 year old, who is pitching well in the majors and has pitched pretty well for his major league career for an A ball hitter with an unknown position. Sure, MadBum may only be a left-handed Hudson instead of the next Randy Johnson, but that’s still very valuable.

Fastball worked between 92-96 MPH, 93-95 MPH in 7th inning. Not sure if he threw a single changeup in the entire outing; I’ve heard it works in the high 70s-low 80s, and he didn’t throw anything in that range. Lots of things going on with him. Will make for an interesting report.
Also of random note, I saw Drew Cumberland bounce a throw to first base . . .while standing completely upright.

okay, I skimmed my notes
I saw a number of pitches that looked like CHs to me around 84-85 MPH, and I’ve seen some differing opinions as to how hard he throws the change. So I’m going to revise what I said above and go with my initial reaction – does throw a CH.
