Felix Pie

Batlimore outfielder Felix Pie will be activated either tomorrow or Tuesday by the Orioles.  After a strong spring training, Pie was off to a good start thru 8 games in April before tearing a muscle in his upper back.  It appears that he is finally healthy and ready to return.  Orioles MASN broadcaster Gary Thorne believe he will be playing LF everyday and take over the leadoff spot.  I am a little surprised by this becasue Corey Patterson has done quite well at the top of the Os lineup.  Once upon a time, Felix Pie was a highly regarded prospect and even John preferred him over Jacoby Ellsbury a few years ago in a prospect smackdown.  Obviously, things played out differently, but I'm wondering if some of you believe that Pie still has the potential to be an impact player.  In the second half last year (48 games, 145 ABs), Pie hit 7 homers and put up a line of .290/.346/.497/.842.

Assuming Pie has recovered from the injury, what are your thoughts on him for this year and the future?

Impact player? No

I don’t see him being an all-star caliber player. I do see him as a major lead off hitter though. I think he can be a valuable long term bat for the right team, preferably in the 8th-9th spot.

I've always liked Pie

He is a top flight defender in a corner, with some good power. Has flashed plate discipline and speed, so as long as contact issues don’t eat him up, I could see him being fairly valuable.

I think he could be a pretty valuable piece. However, even though I know his name is pronounced pea-AYY, I always read it as…well…pie.

I could still see him being an impact player

If you saw him this spring he was pretty exciting to watch. He also put in a very solid season last year.

Still, the outlook is murky right now because of the injury…

pie

if he gets a shot, he will be an impact player…..for fantasy purposes, get him on your team now before it’s too late (like Tyler Colvin)

Felix Pie

It’s amazing to me that Felix Pie is only 25 — it seems like he has been a top prospect for ages.

It is hard to see Pie as a regular, let alone an impact player. For his career in 88 at bats, Pie is hitting .170/.227/.216 against left-handed pitching. This is light years from where he would need to be to hold a full-time job. I can’t find his minor league splits, but the fact that he has played so little against lefties suggests these splits are not anecdotal.

One might argue that 88 at bats is a small sample size. However, these numbers are horrible so he will have to show an ability to hit Major League lefties at least a little before he fairly projects to anything other than a spare part.

He showed a similar platoon in the minors, with a .249/.310/.357 against lefties in 471 AB.

I was thinking Granderson type upside

Before Grandy started sacrificing contact for power.

Pie

I personally see him as more of a Corey Patterson type with more discipline.

Nice

I never knew that he was so big. For some reason I viewed him with more of a Fred Lewis type build.

Felix Pie is not big by any stretch

He’s slightly bigger in build than Patterson.

height? sure he’s taller than Patterson. Build? Pie isn’t jacked by any stretch.

That is what I thought.

Sure...

I probably overstated this, but he’s not a small kid and I think he’s going to hit for power. His swing certainly has a lot more power than Patterson…

was just on MLB.COM videos to see some of his HRs and 2Bs

I really like Pie’s swing. It seems effortless and gets good loft. If he can improve his contact ability, I really do think he can be an impact player.

Its a great swing...

and he’s got a good approach at the plate – and an excellent glove.

There’s a lot to like here.

Which is why I keep trying to figure out where the Cubs screwed him up

Pretty disappointing, a lot of people in Chicago really thought that the Cubs were going to end up with a great player in Pie.

I like baseball.

I’m a poor case who watches a lot of Orioles games. He’s not particularly tall, above average height sure. But certainly in terms of build, the guy is closer to skinny than built/muscular. He’s definitely toned, but I can say the same thing about Corey Patterson who has a small build for a MLB player.

Pie has a more balanced approach, more balanced swing, a beautiful swing in fact. I really like Pie as a player, one of my favorite Orioles. Surprisingly I like him more than Adam Jones now.

He should start at CF

It’s hard to watch the mistake prone Adam Jones play there right now.

Very good player

He’s a legit CF who’s bat is very good there. All-star? No. But he’d be an upgrade for a lot of teams.
