Mitch Moreland = Lyle Overbay? Or +? Or -?
The comp I keep hearing since Moreland was called up is Lyle Overbay...is that fair? In saying that, I think people are saying he'll be okay, not bad and not great.
Superficially, looking at the numbers it makes sense, though Moreland put his numbers up generally being a year younger at each level. But accepting a generally comparable statistical profile, I just wonder if those who know Moreland better think this is a good comp and/or if Moreland will be better or worse than that comp.
Lord knows there are worse things than being Overbay, who has had a good career (very good from ages 27-29, and then dropped off).

Hand/wrist injury derailed Overbay
Never been the same since.

Worse.
Don’t really care for Moreland.
Overbay has had a good career… and people lose sight of that. He’s always cited as an example of a below average 1B but this only illustrates how hard it is to be even an average 1B. His career wOBA of .345 is the same as Torii Hunter’s. He’s actually quite a good hitter. I don’t think Moreland will be that good a hitter.

Overbay is a bit too high
I think Moreland’s peak would be about Overbay’s career avg (meaning Moreland’s career avg would obviously be a bit less.)

I know this is more of a comparison in terms of offensive stats but I want to put it out there since it usually doesn’t get very much play. Lyle Overbay is a great defensive first basemen, probably the best picking first basemen i’ve ever seen, even Overbay haters can begrudgingly attest to his great glove.
True
However, he has grounded into two doubleplays by the time I read your comment.
