JUly 27th Minor League Thread
Another great summer day for baseball. Take a day off from whatever you do to catch a game today, if you can. Here's some of the kids taking the hill around the minor leagues today.
AAA - The one, the only Charles Furbush, Vance Worley makes his AAA debut, in Scranton/WB tonight we have a battle of prospect "Zachs" Zach Britton v Zach McAlister, Brandon Beachy may or may not make his AAA debut for Gwinett after being rained out the other night - Chris Resop is listed as thier starter for tonight, Sean West, Jay Jackson
AA Ball- Bryan Morris returns for Altoona after missing a start - hope all goes well for him. He and the poor Pirates have enough problems, Kyle Drabek - love him, Martin Perez, Trevor Reckling
A+, A, and short season A - Nick Schmidt, Zeke Spruill, Danny Duffy, Jeurys Familia, Manny Banuelos, Trevor May
Take it easy folks.
Enjoy watching, posting, barbequeing, sipping a cold one or two or whatever you like.

Britton
talk of a possible call-up for weekend series vs. Royals.
might as well be undecided
on his developmental path too. Seems to be working for the rest of the Oriole’s young arms.

against the Royals?
Why would the Orioles demote him?

Nice, an early game day thread

Bryan Morris
I know he’s listed on MiLB.com, but this was just written yesterday:
Bryan Morris, the Pirates’ top pitching prospect and Class AA Altoona starter, has a tender, sore elbow that is part of the reason for shutting him down for a couple of starts. “He got out of his delivery a little bit. In this sense, it’s a good opportunity to take a couple of starts off, tweak his delivery and get him back to where he was.”
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10207/1075388-63.stm#ixzz0upinmIJi
I guess that could be read as a prelude to a return, but that’s not how I initially took it. And if he is back already, it seems like a pretty quick turn around from a sore elbow.
Morris is starting.
Through 3: 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K.

Hard work always beats talent if talent doesn't work hard.
Pulled after 5:
2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 K.
I’d imagine he was on a pitch/inning count.
Very nice start, though.

Morris is finished
Two hits, both singles, in five innings. Eight outs by strikeout, six outs by groundball.
It certainly seems that a little rest did Morris a lot of good.

Beachy
Keep an eye out for him tonight. His AAA debut was rained out last night, and Milb doesn’t have him starting, however that might have been the probable for a day ago. Beachy’s been off for awhile so I’m sure they aren’t going to skip him in the rotation.

What are people thinking about Beachy?
I’ve seen the BA write-up and some other things, but what kind of prospect is he, really? I feel like this is a bunch of late-bloomer hype and that makes an interesting story, but what kind of ceiling are we looking at? What kinda stuff does he have?

Depends
If Atlanta gives him an opportunity to start in the spring next year, he could make a case for the rotation. He seems to enjoy the routine of starting rather than relieving and it’s hard to argue with the results so far.
In terms of his stuff, his fast ball, low to mid-90’s, is his out pitch. Besides the pretty good heat, he more importantly is able to locate it. He adds two secondary plus offerings, curve ball and change-up, with a good feel for both. It’s hard to ignore the K/BB ratio and not get excited.
Now that he’s in AAA, if he continues to dominate, I’d love to see Atlanta give him a look in September with the chance that he can earn a spot in the rotation in the spring. Obviously, there’s not the same ceiling here as Teheran, Delgado or Vizcaino, but the floor could be solid 2-3 if given the opportunity, possibly a Shaun Marcum type.
Where would he fit?
Beachy interests me with the reports that he’s been getting, but that rotation is pretty full already with:
Hudson
Hanson
Lowe
Medlen
Jurrjens
Mike Minor is just about ready and Teheran/Delgado/Vizcaino aren’t too far behind. If Beachy is a starter, I’d bet on a different team.
I think you are right
The Braves are very deep in starting pitching both ML and MiL. It would make sense for them to showcase him for a deadline deal. He’d certainly be A LOT higher on some team’s minor league pitching depth charts.

Is the Braves thing a joke?
Does he do this on purpose? I’m flabbergasted.
i dunno, this is just one game
he’s still got the time and raw talent to turn this around IMO

Strasburg isn't pitching
Anybody know what happened?
dont know but
jesseburkhart Strasburg scratched tonight: “It’s not known why, but Ivan Rodriguez could be seen consoling Strasburg in the bullpen.” http://bit.ly/chmBLQ
Great
According to a guy on the MLB gametracker, an announcer said “dead/tired arm”.
Puke
commence praying. I started a separate thread, if someone could update when they hear something it’s appreciated.
I suspect he’s going to miss his next start at least.
Precautionary MRI and X-Rays planed
Hopefully its nothing, but I won’t act like I’m not at least a little worried
For those interested (re. Mets prospects)
Mets Inside Pitch magazine is having a free Chat tonight (http://mets.scout.com/2/986756.html)

Furbush
Bombed as well. 4 HR allowed in 4 IP. 7 ER. At least he didn’t walk any.
by auclairkeithbc on Jul 27, 2010 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions
just guessing
When you’re giving up 4 HR in 4 IP, guys are probably not looking to take pitches against you.
Trevor May
Looking real good. 6 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 11K 0BB. He’s been pitching well since his demotion back to A ball. Walks are still a concern for him, but this is a nice showing. I bet a lot of the Ks are swinging though.
Why selfishly?
Because you enjoy watching him rack up nice numbers?
He’s one of your fantasy players?
Both?
Just guessin here Jar
I'm going to a couple Lakewood/West Virginia games in early August
If he continues to pitch on this schedule, I’ll get to see him in the first game. Sadly, Colvin will be pitching the game before (if the rotation holds).
Good, not great.

Ok
I guess I split the difference with “Very Good”. Better than good, less than great.
Rip Fredrick0220, cwhitman412, Mets2k9- mis you guys
Reckling
Also doing really well since his demotion…
5 IP, 1 R (HR), 7 K, 0 BB.
Well..
Looks like no harm no foul. Maybe in the long run, it will pay off.
by auclairkeithbc on Jul 28, 2010 9:14 AM EDT up reply actions
I'd slightly disagree
Reckling entered the season as a solid prospect but far from elite. He still had command issues that needed to be worked on as well as developing a better (or at least more consistent) fastball. The last thing the Angels should have done was to have him work on these things in one of the most offensive-friendly parks in one of the most offensive-friendly leagues in the minors.
It’s pretty much a lost season for him. Yeah, it was probably good experience to face better hitters in the PCL but when you’re struggling just to keep the score in single digits, you don’t really have the time to better the rest of your game.
I see your point
I think generally speaking it isn’t good, and certainly didn’t appear to be a good thing while he was there. But he is pitching really well now, so who knows? I’m saying maybe it was a bad idea that worked out. We’ll see.

I do.
I wasn’t being sarcastic….I am really impressed with his progress this year
Freddie Freeman
1-3, HR(14), K – I say so far his power looks OK to me.
What does this mean?
Am I the only one who associates Lex Luger with negative things?

Lex Luger = "The Total Package"
So I think he’s saying that Kalish is the Total Package.

Now I feel dumb
I never even thought of it that way. Makes perfect sense in that regard.

Don't feel dumb
I thought the Luger comment meant that Kalish was into, anabolic steroids, synthetic growth hormone, and testosterone.

See, I was thinking of:
Overhyped
Underachiever
May have killed Liz
Teamed up with Buff Bagwell
Lots of negative things came to mind
I will say though, if Kalish did something like this it might move him up my list even higher.

Twins rookie Danny Valencia
He has 4 straight 3 + hit games.
He was 4-4 last night with a grand slam, Tonight he’s 4-5 with a few rbi’s.
He’s now hitting .400. The thing I have noticed about him over the past couple weeks. Everything he hits is linedrives, you rarely see him with a bad pop up, or weak grounder. He’s right on it, just about every time.

I think he is already free...
but he is doing wonders for the chances that he gets to carve out a bit of a career as the Twins starting 3b. They had no place to go but up with Tolbert, Punto and the cast of thousands they had been putting out there these past few seasons.
Shout out to his former teammate Steve Tolleson
After a breakout 08 season in the twins system, struggled in 09, dfa’d. Now crushing the ball in 2010, he could carve out a decent career

no july 28th thread up yet, so I'll put this here
Do I go to SA to see Simon Castro face Corpus Christi tonight in spite of a solid chance of rain, or do I hold off? Opinions?
You gotta go
How far of a drive is it for you? I’d love to hear a current scouting report on Castro. He had that little hiccup in the futures game but has otherwise been pretty darn solid all year.
90-100 minutes each way. partially through Austin rush hour traffic, no less
I suffer for my art.
If you haven’t read my writeup on a previous Castro start, it can be found in the Fanpost archives. Still, he hasn’t been quite as good lately as he was earlier in the year, and I’m wondering if he’s getting tired and/or he’s having issues with repeating his delivery, which has a lot of moving parts.
