Change of Pace
Discuss the distruction of the minor league baseball experience by teams increasingly placing netting accross the entire field and at the very least obstructing the view of the entire infield. What are the associated cost savings acheived by teams and is minor league baseball so succesfull now that it can alienate an ever increasing minority: those individuals who attend to actually watch baseball and evaluate prospects. Your thoughts?

destruction?
I usually sit behind a netted area in minor league stadiums, and I’ve had occasions where a foul ball has slammed into the net right in front of me. I’ve also seen people get hit by foul balls – not pretty.
Netting doesn’t interfere with my ability to evaluate at all. Care to explain?
Yeah
I’m confused by this as well. My regular seats at Camden yards are behind the netting, and I hardly notice it.
I haven’t noticed extensive netting at the local parks either, but I don’t blame teams. In this increasingly litigious society, and a political climate that is very pro trial lawyer I am not surprised if teams are trying to be more proactive in avoiding lawsuits. Especially after the June death in California, which, while a one-off event, will surely result in a massive lawsuit.
most people
go to games to enjoy them, not to evaluate prospects. i don’t really feel like weighing in on whether or not the nets are less pleasurable than the open air, but the fact that the nets don’t hurt prospect evaluation, isn’t necessarily a comfort to people that simply enjoy watching baseball.

Just wondering what you think. Five years after he was part of DVD, through injuries, it seems he is back: 1.217 WHIP, 3.8 BB/9, 8.8 K/9, 2.32 K/BB in AAA. However, he is also 27. What’s his future? Can he be a solid MLB starter? Thanks for your work, John.

Trades
As trades start coming in I would love to get your impression of those deals, unless thats more of a Rotowire thing.

I was wondering what your thoughts are on him since his second callup.

Ryan Lavarnway
Mine is more of a question to you than a suggestion. I am a life long Red Sox fan and follow the minor leagues closely. I have heard the constant rumblings that the Red Sox lack the “Catcher of the Future” in their system. I was very excited when they drafted Ryan Lavarnway, but since have had many questions and few avenues for information. His first year he played the DH position primarily which told me that the Sox know his bat will play one day, but do they see his defense improving to the point where he may be able to assume the daily backstop duties or are they convinced that his development is too little too late and he will end up a DH/1B type player?
Thank you,
Jimmy
Braves pitching
Maybe an in depth look at the Braves pitching from the under 25’s already excelling at the big league level to the rising prospects in the minors.
Are you still doing the AA Transition Monitors?
I don’t remember if they are in-season or postseason pieces but I always enjoyed those.
With the deadline looming, maybe it’s time for a “You’re The GM” piece or two.
Maybe an off-topic piece? I know in one of the last suggestion threads there was a television discussion that took place towards the end, so maybe something along those lines.

Maybe a "Crystal Ball Smackdown?"
Where we compare Crystal Balls for comparable players — J.Upton and Heyward, for example.
it may take too much time
but maybe a prospect smackdown segment for every team (take 2 prospects from the same team) you can spread it out across the rest of the season. One for instance for TB could be Jake Mcgee and Alex Torres
AAAA
I’m not sure how easily it would fit into this format, but I would be very interested to see anything you might write about the phenomenon of the AAAA hitter, and if there are any general rules that would explain why the performance of players with that tag fdoesn’t translate well to the major leagues.
Crystal Ball: Neil Walker
Assuming it hasn’t already been done (I’m a rather new fella here).

Hard work always beats talent if talent doesn't work hard.
There were a few questions you said would be good for larger pieces
during the July 7th AQA thread, including:
- A piece on the development of the Royals’ system
- Prospects who could use a change of scenery
- Something on BJ Upton
And then there are a few things I’d like to see:
- A piece comparing young latin SS’s Profar, Sano, Hechaverria, Salcedo, and any others I’m missing.
- A piece on the progress (or lack thereof) on catchers from the 2009 draft including Stassi, Myers, Bailey, and others
- I swear I remember someone asking about this in one of the last two AQA threads but can’t find it. Anyway, something on some of the best relievers in the minor leagues
- Prospect Smackdown: Robbie Ross vs Ian Krol
- Some names to watch in short-season ball
- Something on the Brewers group of young pitchers (Odorizzi, Peralta, Heckathorn) would be awesome
- Something on young OF’ers in the NL Central (Rasmus, McCutchen, Stubbs, Colvin)
Just throwing stuff out there. Any of this would be very much appreciated, John. Love your work.

Future Aces
Take a look at 4-5 minor league starters you feel will develop into true ‘aces’ based on current skill set and projection.
Midseason updates
I recall you used to do a midseason snapshot on each team’s top 20 with a new grade for each player. That was always a good read.

Alonso
Something on Alonso would be good. Has been on fire lately but they seem to have halted his LF exposure. What is his story?
Maybe take a look at sleepers or under-the-radar prospects
I’m kind of trolling for Tigers coverage here- I’d love to see something on Brayan Villareal, but I’d be happy with some of the non-big name coverage too.

What To Watch For
This probably wouldn’t be easy or quick to do, but it may be very interesting and helpful to your readers…. Take a handful of mid-tier prospects (graded in the C range) and do a “What To Watch For” crystal ball-type write up on each player. Let us know what would make that C/C+ player turn into a B/B+ player. What statisicaly anomalies would trigger you to give a player a higher grade

Prospect retro
I would love a look back at the development of Andres Torres. He is having a breakout season and at age 32, I really like these late bloomer stories.
