July 23rd Minor Legue Thread

They are playin' ball today, July 23rd 2010. Here's some pitchers taking the mound by storm today.

AAA- Andy Oliver's first AAA start after getting mailed down from Detroit, Carlos Hernandez goes for Tampa (anybody old enough to remember when he was a real good prospect, with the Astros?), Esmil Rogers (very underrated arm)

AA Ball- Kyle Gibson, Mark Rogers, Aaron Miller looking for 1st win in AA (5th start), Ethan Hollingsworth (Who?) makes AA debut tonight, Simon Castro goes tonight - what an arm.

A+, A, and Short Season A- Maikel Cleto, Ethan Martin, Tim Alderson (and his 37.80 ERA in A+), Kyle Lobstein, Tyler Skaggs, Chad James, Kendal Volz,

Columbus beating Pawtucket 6-3 in the 9th in IL action. When did Mat LaPorta get sent back down? I thought he was playing regularily for The Tribe? He's 0-2 tonight so far , with a walk.

Have fun watching and chatting folks :-)

Jeremy Jeffress put on the 40 man roster

So he can avoid a lifetime ban for his pot problems? Can you do that?

loop hole

They had an article about it in the Milwaukee Journal a couple weeks ago, kind of interesting situation.

HGH

They added him to the 40 man roster so that he follows the MLB rules and cannot get in trouble for a positive HGH test.

i’m guessing it has more to do with weed than HGH.

weed

Then I find the timing weird. They could have put him on the 40 man awhile ago and saved his butt. Now that they are going to test MILB players for HGH all of a sudden they put him on the 40 man so that he is not able to get into any trouble if they find anything in his system. Could very well be for his weed problems but I just found the timing to be more of a concern of HGH.

by Pup Dog on Jul 23, 2010 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Its almost impossible to fail an HGH

There has literally been one ever and they already had anecdotal evidence before they tested him. You only test positive for 6-12 hours after injecting and they only draw blood after games. Take it before you go to bed and you’ll be completely safe.

a possibility

he smoked. he got surprised at the stadium by random testing. he tells the team immediate what happened so they just add him to the 40 to avoid suspension.

Robbie Erlin continues to dominate the Sallly league

5 IP | 5 H | 1 R | 1 ER | 0 BB | 8 SO

Season line:

81 IP | 57 H | 88 SO | 13 BB

His ERA and FIP coming in to todays game were 1.66 ERA and 2.57 FIP. 27.5% K and 4.5% BB coming in to todays game.

He gave up a solo HR to lead off the game.

He could handle a promotion here soon, but I think he’ll spend the rest of the season in Hickory. Here are a couple scouting reports on him, one by Jason Parks, and the other by Scouting the Sally.

LaPorta

Kind of funny. On MiLB.com he is in the lineup for Columbus. Then on espn.com he is in the lineup tonight for the Indians. He is a pretty busy man today. Also he is not listed in the Indians transactions as being sent down. I think just a mistake by milb.com.

Eury Perez

4/4 2 SB and 2 runs

He was GCL player of the year last year, already has 38 SB’s and has been raking the whole second half of the season. The only thing that concerns me is his K/BB ratio.

by mwyche on Jul 24, 2010 12:47 AM EDT reply actions

Very interested to see what Perez will do.

I was too tired to post his line last night. Surprised that he’s been the brightest star in Hagerstown’s outfield as of late. Another issue is can he play CF defensively well enough. Believe I’ve heard from Nats minor league sites that he’s raw there. Got a lot of tools though, and it seems like he’s responded well to the honor of being selected for the Futures Game.

by souldrummer on Jul 24, 2010 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions

Yea he had two hits that game I believe one was against Scheppers. Eury definitely has the speed to be a good CF as evident by his 38 SB’s so far. Just hope he’s taking good routes as well or someone is teaching him, has anyone seen Eury play?

2007: 1.21 K/BB
2008: 1.15 K/BB
2009: 1.33 K/BB
2010: 3.93 K/BB

His K/BB has more than doubled this year when he took the big jump from the GCL to SAL. I’m hoping he can show better plate discipline the rest of the way so he can be ready for A+ next year.

Another good Nat prospect who doesn’t get much love is D. Freitas dude has a 19 game hitting streak, .985 OPS and .387 BA in his professional debut.

by mwyche on Jul 24, 2010 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions

This is before his recent hot streak and the Futures game written on 7/2

Here’s the link that includes reviews on all Hagerstown prospects at midseason.

Here’s the quote:

Eury Perez (20)
Speed to burn, but bad breaks in the outfield and an average (to be generous) arm make me wonder what the hype from the fans is all about. Perez’s game (and future) will be all about his plate contact. Maybe he can be Nyjer Morgan but he could also be Pedro Powell. Either way, I think he was overrated before the season.

Russ Canzler - 3/5, 2 R, 1 3B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 1 K

On the season, he has a .312/.398/.599 line in 202 AB’s, with a 48K/28BB combination. He’s 24. Over the last two seasons, the Cubs have shifted the first baseman around, so he’s gotten experience at 3rd and corner OF. There was always some raw power, but you’d have to go back to 2006 and shortseason Boise to find the last time that he was swinging for this type of pop. May simply be one of those fluke years, but it definitely has gotten my attention. Even when you adjust for park and luck, he still has a very good line, according to minorleaguesplits.

He's also pitching on 3 days rest.

Atilano’s utter failure caught the Nationals off guard and the Brewers aren’t an easy introduction back to the big. 5IP, 3R, 7H, 2BB, 3K we would be a decent line if the hits are mostly singles. I’m real interested to see how he handles lefty Fielder.
