potential 40 steal guys in the minors
what players in the minor leagues are top 200 prospects and potential 40 steal guys at the mlb level? off the top of my head i would say dee gordon, mike trout, hak ju-lee, delino deshields jr (not signed yet), ben revere, jared mitchell. maybe donavan tate? anybody else? i know there are some other guys like luis durango or anthony gose, but i am not sure if they are considered top 200 prospects right now (although gose might be)

Jay Austin
Don’t know if he’s a top 200 yet but he could steal 40.
Astros actually have a lot of guys with good speed. Austin Wates maybe (assuming he signs), Jose Altuve, Albert Cartwright.
None of them are top 200 except DeShields and maybe Austin.
If were going with unsigned draft picks
Gary Brown has that potential
Proud father of Mike Krukow (who is more than 3 times my age)
Grab Some Pine, Meat
Still cheering for Kevin Frandsen
John Bowker: One of the 3 best OF's on the Giants roster
He could end up being a really interesting player if he can get on base enough
The defense in center should be fantastic, and he’s got legitimate plus-plus speed, too. Could end up being an absolutely fantastic everyday center fielder.

He's not going to walk much
And I’m OK with that considering how rarely he strikes out. He’s a good pure hitter with elite speed and defense. He’s not anywhere near my favorite player in this class, but there were way too many people bashing that pick.
yes
Shockingly, players CAN be successful without drawing a lot of walks.
Really, I think they tend to be overvalued just about everywhere but the majors. While some discipline is a good thing, it seems to be forgotten that in the minors, you want your guys swinging those bats, not leaving them on their shoulders. Eventually they’re going to face pitchers who are going to make them hit to get on base, so they might as well start learning now.
I much prefer looking at the number of strikeouts that a hitter has. If a guy can make consistent contact, you can dream on just about anything. If he can’t, maybe he’ll end up developing some skills and becoming a useful player . . .but most likely, he won’t. You need seriously excellent skills to make up for a lack of pure hitting ability – go call Jeremy Hermida about that one.
see Juan Pierre in his 1st five years
everyone’s favorite whipping boy at this site was of this mold and very productive his 1st five MLB seasons.
Same goes for Jonathan Villar at Lakewood, who’s tied with Gose with 33 bags but 13 CS compared to Anthony’s 26.

Derrick Robinson
I know there are some questions about the bat but assuming he ever lands a starting position in the Royal outfield he has some pretty amazing speed, should be able to swipe 40.
Matt Lipka- Braves
maybe an outside chance, but I could see it happening
as do I
super fast with a good bat…not sure how much power is there but he’s still young…looks to be a top of the order hitter…hopefully takes big steps since Yunel is gone.

Starling Marte, maybe?
Hey, an out is an out - unless you're Mario, in which case it's probably two outs. -UtesFan89
Hard work always beats talent if talent doesn't work hard.
Eric Young Jr
If he can translate the high OBP to the MLB level.
He already started to
Before he broke his leg anyway. I still say Young is the best 2B in the Rockie organization.
Trayvon Robinson
Might not quite be a top 200 prospect, but I think he deserves mentioning. 29 SBs this yr so far and had about 47 last year, IIRC.
he is climbing into top 100 prospect right now

Yeah, he's top-200, I would say
He’s been hitting really well since the beginning of June: .351/.436/.486

Also...
He’s having a bad year, but Tyson Gillies is another candidate. He’s coming back from being injured. Dont know what his injury was but it must have affected his running because he only has 2 SBs so far. Had 50+ last year, IIRC.
He's a legit 80 runner

I would even go out on a limb and say
he has 60 SB potential
Mike Trout

LOL
absolutely shocked no one named him…that fool already has more right now…

Jake Marisnick has wheels and
a ton of potential. Ryan Kalish might have an outside chance as well.

The year is not over....
Lets look at his games played over his career:
2005-96
2006-95
2007-118
2008-129
2009-37
Rickie is a good player but he isn’t a good bet to ever remain healthy.

Corey Wimberly
Not an everyday player, but could fit on some roster as a utility type
He meant 40 steals in a season
Not in a career. ;)

of all guys listed here
ackley and trout are the most likely to steal 40+ bases in a season. A plus-plus hitter with plus speed equals SB galore.
by another know it all on Jul 20, 2010 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Is Ackley that fast?
I have never read that he was supposed to be a really big steals guy. He has 8 steals this year in 87 games so I don’t really see him being a 40 steal guy in the majors.
by King Billy Royal on Jul 20, 2010 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Yup, Ackley is very fast
Before the 2009 draft, Keith Law gave his speed a 70 on the 20-80 scouting scale.
It’s part of why people are so confident that Ackley can move to center field if the 2B experiment doesn’t work out.

On top of those mentioned
Desmond Jennings
Peter Bourjos
Jose Tabata
Brett Lawrie
Trayvon Robinson
Tim Beckham (if he’s still top 200 at this point)
Anthony Gose
Jay Austin
Non top-200 guys with a reasonable chance of being regular big leaguers who could get there if they get a starting job somewhere:
Fernando Perez
Jordan Danks
Derrick Robinson
Gorkys Hernandez
Jean Segura
Ty Morrison
Francisco Peguero
Bad Left Hook - The SB Nation boxing blog

Jordan Danks stealing 40+ bases? Huh?
Coming into this season, he was 13-for-17 in 113 games, and he’s 14-for-18 in 86 games this season.
I don’t see where 40 steals would come from.

no way
danks ever steals 40 bases. alot of the guys mentioned here have awful plate discipline, meaning they won’t get on base enough to steal 40+ bases.
by another know it all on Jul 20, 2010 4:36 PM EDT reply actions
That's not true.
Juan Pierre does a fantastic job of racking up stolen bases with crappy on-base skills.
From 2005-2009, he stole an average of 50 bases per season while batting .289/.334/.364.
Man, do I hate Juan Pierre..

Danny Espinosa
I could see him stealing 40 in a year in the majors. Deceptively fast + a smart runner.
A smart runner?
I don’t know how he is on getting from first-to-third or anything, but his SB success rates haven’t been fantastic.
I don’t see 40-steal seasons in the majors from a guy who’s 51-for-72 (70.8%) on SB attempts in 249 minor league games.

Espinosa is a 75% success player...
I don’t see where you are getting your numbers from?
Espinosa, over the last two years, is 59/78(75%) which is good. He should average 20-30 steals a year in the majors, and I could see him having one really good year where he steals 40.
Huh? Now I must ask you where you're getting your numbers from?
Because B-R, MiLB and First Inning all have Espinosa at 2-for-4 in 2008, 29-for-40 in 2009 and 20-for-28 in 2010, which comes out to 51-for-72.

Looked up the wrong player....UGH
Regardless, 70% isn’t too bad, especially for a player who isn’t known for his speed. Having watched him, I could see a 35-40 steal season in the majors.
Yeah, I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility because Espinosa is a very good runner
But he’s going to need to refine his approach and become more aggressive as a base-stealer, and he also needs to show that he can get on base enough at the MLB level to retain a job long enough to steal 40 bases.
Yeah, I suppose he’s a possibility though.
I like baseball.
