Freddie Freeman ETA...when will he come up? What to expect from him right away? Will he be more of a power hitter or a contact/average hitter? What do you expect him to hit (batting order) in 5 years?

My friend emailed me this question so i thought i'd get your opinion

i think

he will be James Loney with a bit more pop.

think:

.300 hitter with around 10-15 HR and 90-100 RBI.

10-15 seems a bit low even for freeman. The guy has hit more than that at two different levels now all at very young age relative to league. 20-25 seems more likely to me.

Freddie Freeman ETA…when will he come up?

April of ’11.

What to expect from him right away?

I’ll go .280/.320/.450.

Will he be more of a power hitter or a contact/average hitter?

He’s a really good hitter and has some pop. His approach is holding him back at this point. I’d say more of a contact guy, but I’m with yondaime4, 20-25 homers and lots of doubles.

What do you expect him to hit (batting order) in 5 years?

Fifth or sixth. He has the tools to hit in the middle of the order, but like I said, his approach is holding him back.

what is it specifically about his approach that’s holding him back

Also, not necessarily always ‘bad’ pitches, but he rarely waits for his pitch and often swings at pitchers’ pitches.

so if he can be as successful as he has with that bad approach, how much more successful can he be with a good or even decent approach? Would that take him from Overbay type production to Morneau type production. I have only seen him in Spring Training games, so don’t have a good read on his approach like you. I’ve seen you say this at your blog so I’m just curious.

I would expect him to struggle more at AAA with a bad approach. Are his contact skills just so good that he makes up for it?

Basically

He makes contact with a lot of pitchers’ pitches. I’m skeptical of his ability to get away with that sort of thing in MLB.
