Still early in the game, but it’s worth noting Jiwan James has extended his hit streak to 23 games. He is 2/2 with a 2B, a SB, and 2 runs.

Make that 3/3. Added another single.

Check that…a 3B. He’s a HR away from the cycle through 5 innings.

I love JJ
An OF of James, Brown, and somebody else (Victorino/Werth/Ibanez/Singleton) would be pretty huge for Philly
Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson
Gose?
I think he’s forgotten in all of it…he’s the second most exciting bat in the system after Singleton
Although it's disturbing...
…how many times he’s been caught stealing this year.
How does he compare to a guy like Aaron Hicks (who is seen as a consensus top 20 prospect)? Obviously he is walking a lot less, but he’s apparently showing more speed as well. They are also about the same age, with Jiwan being a few months older.

just to be clear
Just because Player A steals more bases than Player B does not mean that Player A is faster than Player B. Aaron Hicks is plenty fast.
Hence why I said “apparently” (which really doesn’t mean much either in the context, but point taken).

Lowrie
AAA rehab game. 3-3, with a HR and a 2B.
lowrie
thoughts on Lowrie as a fantasy b ball investment? Is there still hope? Will he be up in the bigs this year? Future w/ sox?
by Rupert Pupkin on Jul 17, 2010 1:18 AM EDT up reply actions
Debates on Lowrie
raged around here a couple years ago. Regardless of how you interpreted it, the fact is that he had enough potential to stir up some real controversy.
Now he’s lost 2 yrs of development time. Seems like that could cut his ceiling way back…but then again, Josh Hamilton and Rick Ankiel made decent players despite severe stunts (understatement in Hamilton’s case)….He intrigues me still, but I don’t know what to think..
Plenty of hope
He’s a quality bat at shortstop and his limited time in the field yielded pretty interesting results (his UZR/Plus Minus figures were pretty sick albeit SSS). Big caveat is the status of his wrist and who knows if it can hold up to the rigors of a full season of baseball.
As for expectations for this year? Pedroia’s timeline and Bill Hall’s recent results (.800+ OPS in Jun/July) might not give Lowrie much of a chance to earn significant playing time should he prove himself capable. But a healthy Lowrie could find significant use as something of a IF supersub by the end of the year and if the health carries over to 2011, I could see him threatening Scutaro’s job security.
Agreed. Also, not sure how open the Red Sox would be to moving him, but if I were a major league team with a gaping hole at shortstop, I’d certainly inquire.
I happen to know of one team
with a GAPING hole at SS whose GM drafted Lowrie.

I think Molina was crying when he got to third
His triple would have been an inside the park homerun for any other player in MLB.

He’s not striking out much at all though. 11% K rate is very, very good for a young player showing so much game power.
Agreed
But, that doesn’t mean he isn’t swinging and missing, it means he isn’t striking out. We’ll see how it effects him at higher levels.

Andy (PA): Any thoughts on Aderlin Rodriguez? Hes just mashing in the Appy League right now.
Ben Badler: His value is mostly in his bat, but he can hit and hit for power. Jefry Marte did the same thing in Rookie ball though, so I’d like to see him do it in the South Atlantic League before getting too excited, but there’s reasons to be optimistic.
Jorge Alfaro scouting report
Despite being one of the youngest and most unseasoned prospects in the system, Alfaro represents one of the biggest payoffs, with the tools (on paper) to emerge as a perennial All-Star-level player. However, this isn’t a player that is going to explode through the minors with accelerated development. Alfaro is so raw that it might take him three seasons to reach full-season ball and to start showing actualized tools in game action, assuming, of course, that his raw tools can make the transition to live game action. Tool-based grade: 61; first-division starter at the major league level; All-Star-level talent.
Freude schöner Götterfunken, Tochter aus Elysium, Freude!
Jerry Sands
2-4 hr (7) bb
Leads the minors with 25 homeruns, TSL in AA is 71 AB 310/419/634 18k.
obviously, only blemish is the K rate is a bit high but he looks like a slugger. BTW this is his age 22 season.
Yep.
No homers tonight but did extend his hitting streak to 20 games. (Arencibia)

Seems very optimistic to me
I’m not sure how well his bat will play, but as a first baseman it’s going to have to be VERY good. I’m not ready to say that it will be.
He plays 1b because the dodgers have excess OF prospects
His arm plays in RF and he is athletic now. Most likely, he’ll end up in LF and will be average there with range with a solid to above average arm. I don’t see how these comps are unrealistic. Look at Reynolds and Gomes minor league path, Sands compares positively.
to compare
Mark Reynolds age 22 season (A+ & AA)
449 PA 318/401/633 31HR 11.58 bb% 24.28 k% 6.90 hr%
Jerry Sands age 22 season so far (A & AA)
373 PA 328/429/643 25hr 13.67 bb% 21.18 k% 6.70 hr%
Or he's just terrible at defense:
When Sands was demolishing the Midwest League to the tune of .333/.432/.646, it was easy to take it with a grain of salt, as he was a 22-year-old beating up on a level he had no right to be in. Moved up two levels to the Southern League, he’s now bashed four home runs in five games, and we don’t have that grain of salt anymore. He’s a bad outfielder and even worse first baseman, so he has to keep mashing. But just one week against more reasonable competition has done wonders for his prospect status.
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=11352
As far as comparing stats, that’s not a great practice. Prospects don’t follow pre-established lines.
I've read that too from Goldstein...
and I’ve read conflicting reports from other articles, from people who have actually seen him play. Sickels, Keith Law, Goldstein, no disrespect to them, but they can’t see every prospect live.
Here is an interview with Hugh Bernreuter, who is the Great Lakes Loons local beat wrier who has probably seen every game Sands has played in Great Lakes.
http://www.truebluela.com/2010/7/1/1547585/great-lake-loons-update-with-hugh
He talks postiviely about Sands and his defensive capabilities.
Also, as for comparing stats. Sure comparing statistical lines of two players who physical characteristics are vastly different is not a great practice. But Reynolds and Sands have extremely similar physical traits and even baseball background (both low round college draft picks). Also, what else do we have to go off of? He’s been destroying the baseball and we need to see a precedent for these sorts of players to see how they have done in the majors.
Right, but they talk to scouts
I trust the consensus scouting opinion more than a beat writer’s.
Mark Reynolds is one of the few players ever to strike out at such a ridiculous rate and still manage to be a productive player. I would not bet on anyone to follow that kind of path.

tullis vs mier
3 of those Ks were Jiovanni Mier.
Don’t have a good feeling about Mier at this point. People try to remind me of ARL, of scouting vs. stats at this point . . .but everybody who has actually seen this guy seems to think he looks awful with poor projection for the future.
random notes of interest
J.D. Martinez has been promoted to AA Corpus Christi from Lexington in the Sally League.
Thinking about going to see the Martin Perez vs. Douglas Arguello rematch in Frisco tomorrow, although that’s unlikely at present.
Kentrail Davis
2-4, 2 2B. Hitting .357/.465/.571 since the demotion to low-A, with 10 BBs and 5 K’s.
He’s a little old for the league, but the K’s are great to see. That was a big problem for him.
If he keeps hitting like this the rest of the year he’ll be back in my good graces as a prospect.
