KC Royals (w/ cheese) Top 10
this is quite obviously one of the best groups in the minors --- with plenty of high profile bats/arms spread throughout the minors, the long suffering fans of KC have something to get excited about... rather drool about.
2. Eric Hosmer
3. Wil Myers
4. Mike Montgomery
5. John Lamb
6. Chris Dwyer
7. Christian Colon
8. Danny Duffy
9. Tim Melville
10. Aaron Crow
what do some of you guys think?

I love this group more than any other in baseball
Only thing that can keep them back is Moores poor grasp of a team
…they should send down Huntington & Nutting, because they aren’t ready, either. - royshowell

Absolutely ridiculous. Melville, Crow, Colon, Duffy and Dwyer might be a better top 5 than a few MLB teams and this is their 6-10.
the top 5
really, i think you could jumble around and any order ya spit out would be defend-able.
R.I.P. cwhitman412, Frederick0220, & Mets2k9
agreed
mine would be totally different (montegomery, moustakas, myers, lamb, hosmer)
Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson
Interesting
I was wondering if Lamb is getting close to passing Monty (due to the injury concern)…
I think mine would be:
Mous
Hosmer
Lamb
Montgomery (injury concerns)
Myers (position concerns)
Its damn close and I'd certainly consider it.
Especially with Montgomery having recurring elbow problems.

I like that list
Proud father of Mike Krukow (who is more than 3 times my age)
Grab Some Pine, Meat
Still cheering for Kevin Frandsen
John Bowker: One of the 3 best OF's on the Giants roster
Not to mention they have Arguello in the minors,
What’s the word on his progression?

Correction: Arguelles....

it's not good
i can’t really elaborate because i don’t know all the details. but Greg Schaum has said he’s heard some not so nice things about him. he’s also injured. yeah.
R.I.P. cwhitman412, Frederick0220, & Mets2k9
I understand he's injured...
From what I’ve read, he’s an impressive talent with room to grow into his stuff.

Thankfully
For other AL teams they will probably screw up some of those guys like Gordon and KK.
I'm waiting to see Brett Eibner sign.
idk what is taking so long. Suppose to have pretty good power and good in the field. Even though scouts say he is a better pitcher. I think him and Colon can add 2 advanced bats to go with Hos, Moose, and Myers.
We also have Argulles which is getting a lot of hate right now.
Also not really prospects but Kila and Gordon are both only 26 and i still see them contributing to the MLB team. Just need to be given a chance.
Also a couple interesting guys for me at least is next year Jeff Bianchi will be coming back from TJ surgery. He was making a name for himself before he got hurt. Paulo Orlando is another guy. He is smashing right now. Both are 23 so not extremely old but we will see.
Also im pretty excited about to Cheslor Cuthbert. I believe he is only 17 or 18. Also Shin Jin-ho. Couple really young prospects we got in the foreign market and could make a name for their selves a few years down the road.
Lots of talent in the minors. Should be top 5 IMO.
Eibner might sneak into my top 10
still not sure if he’s a guy that’ll take a while to develop or a guy who will just completely take off once he’s no longer pitching. i do think the sooner he got signed though, the better for him.
R.I.P. cwhitman412, Frederick0220, & Mets2k9
Also it is weird but we have a good amount of bullpen talent in our minors.
Luis Coleman is doing really well. We just drafted Chapman from Florida. Tyler Samplerseems like a hard throwing bullpen guy. Blaine Hardy looks good. There is probably a few other guys im forgetting.
Edgar Osuna is a 22 year old prospect who i think is underrated. 2.59 ERA in AA. Heard he only throws about 85 but his command is on point. Anyone else have an opinion on him?
not sure
He’s certainly one of the most intriguing prospects in this organization, and I’m expecting he’s going to get a lot of praise by the BA guys. While he doesn’t have the arm, I’d throw out a Dee Gordon in CF comp on him. Also similar to Denard Span. He’s just crazy raw, but he does show good feel for the strike zone.
I'm assuming Kila is not elligible, but I might have him as high as #5
Mine would be
1) Moustakas
2) Myers
3) Montgomery
4) Lamb
5) Hosmer
6) Duffy
7) Colon
8) Dwyer
9) Melville
10) Crow
I don't feel comfortable calling him a prospect at his age, and I didn't know if we were going with the under 25 thing.
Kila would probably then edge out Hosmer a bit for #5 and I would probably have him between 60-75 on a top 100.

just worth adding here
Hardy isn’t the best pitcher I’ve seen this year . . .but what a guy to watch pitch. He was clearly born in the wrong era.
Best top-10 in baseball right now.
I hate to say it, but there’s something that Dayton Moore has done really, really well.
There’s a chance that we could be wrong about Moore after all, if he really does build a contender in the next few years. I’m really excited to see how their 2013 lineup looks when I get to them in the series. Next up I’m doing Seattle, though, it’ll be up tomorrow at the latest for anyone that’s interested.

I agree...
that this is the best top 10. Maybe Atlanta and Seattle come pretty close, but I still have to say the Royals have the best. I would change a few things on the list though. I would go:
1. Moustakas
2. Montgomery
3. Myers
4. Lamb
5. Hosmer
6. Colon
7. Dwyer
8. Crow
9. Duffy
10. Melville
Sick top ten.
ETHAN MARTIN!!!!
I don't know..
Seattle’s would be what, assuming that Smoak and Saunders are up? Ackley, Pineda, Franklin, Noriega, Liddi, Triunfel, Jones, Moore and… Mario Martinez? Greg Halman? Blake Beavan? Julio Morban? Dennis Raben? Johermyn Chavez? Mauricio Robles? Maikel Cleto? Carlos Peguero? Taijuan Walker? Maybe James Paxton if they sign him?
And how about Atlanta? Teheran, Delgado, Vizcaino, Freeman, Minor, Lopez and… who?
I really like their systems now, but I don’t think they come close to KC’s top ten.
Kansas City’s ten best prospects are truly an impressive group from top to bottom, their best five prospects (Moustakas, Montgomery, Lamb, Myers, Hosmer) are a freaking awesome group.

I think you basically said it yourself with Seattle.
Its hard for anyone to compete with KC’s top TEN, but certainly Seattle has given themself a very deep farm in which you have a lot of breakout candidates. Whereas Atlanta is super top-heavy with that pitching and hard not to fall in love with. Same with Texas.
KC-Ro is clearly ahead of the pack, they just need to stop poaching Seattle castaways that keep blocking the real future of that team. Free Kila and Gordon!

this...
and i think that KC has the best top-10 in baseball ahead of Boston, Atlanta and Seattle.
i like Montgomery more than Hosmer (where’s his slugging?) and i think Myers could be Mauer-lite (less % more power).

How much credit does Moore deserve?
1) He hasn’t handled the drafts personally. That’s not his job description. He certainly deserves some “buck stops here” credit, though.
2) They’ve spent a TON of money. Lots of smart farm directors and GMs could do well with the budget they have had the last few years. They broke the record.
3) He hasn’t translated any of it into MLB wins – which is, after all, the ultimate goal.
Does he deserve some credit? Absolutely. I just don’t think he deserves the accolades he’s getting in some quarters.

I think he definitely deserves a good deal of credit
It certainly doesn’t make up for his downfalls at the major league level, but convincing ownership to spend that kind of money on amateur talent is a pretty great move, and they’ve done a good job of executing it.
It’s not like it makes him one of the best GM’s in the game, or even a good GM, but it’s a pretty great farm system and he deserves some credit for that.

I think people mostly think of him as the guy that keeps signing and trading for bad players that block the good youngsters.
Jason Kendall, Yuniesky Betancourt, Scott Podsednik, Rick Ankiel, Jose Guillen, Willie Bloomquist, Mike Jacobs. And I don’t know that you can blame Moore for Olivo and John Buck for having career years elsewhere, but you can certainly say that choosing to go with Kendall instead of them is ridiculous. The average age of their hitters, on a “Rebuilding” team is 30. And I’m not saying you can play all your youngsters at once (look at the disaster in Pittsburgh) but certainly there could have been a mix in there.
It’s frustrating to watch KC run their system. By next season they have to be playing Gordon, Kila, and probably Moustakas full-time. All of whom are OPSing above 1.000 incredibly.

Man...
this is far from directed at only you… but I can’t wait to see Kila come up and hit .264/.340/.440 as a 27 year old rookie with so-so defense at 1B so I don’t have to hear about what a incredible tragedy it is that he hasn’t gotten a shot.
Yeah, he’s a useful player who has sat behind some pretty crappy 1B. He’s just not that good a prospect/player.

Blasphemy
Don’t listen to him, he is talking crazy lol.
I think he is a good prospect and Royal fans including myself have fell in love with him but he sees the ball well, has power and can talk a shit ton of walks. I think that is why we like him the most, and cause he is Hawaiian.
Is Myers over Hosmer as obvious as every makes it.
Hosmer is really good and has great plate discipline, can go to opposite field with it and his power is coming along. Some people like him more than Moustakas.
I think a lot of people are underrating Hosmer based on last year.
This season he’s exactly the guy that deserved to be taken No. 3 overall in the draft.
Not only is his overall line insane for someone playing in Wilmington (.345/.422/.532), but he’s been really consistent, and I don’t think it’s fair to complain about a guy’s power when he’s got 27 doubles, 5 triples and 7 homers in 308 plate appearances as a 20-year-old, I think it’s entirely fair to project some of those doubles to turn into home runs.
I’m surprised by how much people on this site have downgraded Hosmer, to be honest.
I like baseball.

Myers
people who like Myers more (including me) value what he’ll do for ya on the defensive side. he might still be able to catch, and if not he could be a plus corner outfielder. Hosmer is definitely a better pure hitter at this point (very few in the minors are better, and that’s if there are any), but I prefer Myers all around game. and that does absolutely nothing to diminish Hosmer as a prospect. he’s really good too.
R.I.P. cwhitman412, Frederick0220, & Mets2k9
I don't know if Hosmer could really be a decent defensive right fielder
But I know that Keith Law has speculated that he could possibly play it given his arm strength, although presumably he’d have to move to first base if his range declined at all.
Although obviously Myers projects much better defensively.

Uh...
I’m not comfortable in the slightest with the claim that Myers “could be” a plus corner outfielder. By that logic, any prospect could potentially be a plus corner outfielder if they are even slightly athletic with a good arm.
by Franchise887 on Jul 12, 2010 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't know
CF has been mentioned as a destination for Myers if he doesn’t stick behind the plate, scouts like the athleticism that much. Maybe doublestix should have said “above average COF”, but I’m not sure what he said is much of a stretch.
http://bullpenbanter.com
Well, let me ask you this
They both appear to have special bats. Myers is very athletic and should be a good defender even if he doesn’t stick at catcher… which is why giving him a major discout because of positional concerns isn’t warranted. Even if Myers moves, he’s not your typical catcher who can only go to 1B and not be a defensive asset. Hosmer, OTOH, was clearly a 1B only at 18 yo.
How much more confident can you be in Hosmer’s bat over Myers than you think its will surpass the surplus value Myers will bring…?

Personally, I might even like Myers more just as a hitter right now.

Me too
I’m glad I’m not nuts, but Myer’s plate discipline and isoP are both better than Hosmer’s. The hit tool is important for Hosmer and a big advantage, for sure, but I love seeing my young prospects working lots of walks and with a high XBH%.
Myers fits just about everything I look for in a young prospect. I’m not sure I could like him any more than I do now, except for the defensive questions. He’s the first guy I look up on my Milb.com bookmarks every evening, and I always expect to see a 1/3, 2b, BB line (and I almost always get it!)

Anyone have a quick 11-20?
11.Kila
12.Brett Eibner
13.Noel Argulles
14. Paulo Orlando
15. Jeff Bianchi(have hope, may be too high)
16.Derrick Robinson
17.Edgar Osuna
18.Tyler Sample
19.Johnny Giavotella
20.Slavador Perez/Cheslor Cuthbert/ Jin-ho shin/Kelvin Herrera
im not really sure on #20 lol.
Don’t judge me by this list lol, but that is some pretty good depth IMO.
probably needs Clint Robinson
Might have gotten more notice this year if not for Moustakas being in the same lineup, but I was relatively impressed with what I saw out of him. He’s a little old for AA but he can hit, and I thought he had solid mobility around first base.
I didn't want to add him because he is already 25 even though i put Kila on there but he is an exception because he is awesome lol.
Clint is kinda taking the same road as Kila.
I forgot Luis Coleman who has been great this year.
Also i am excited for draft picks Micheal Antonio(SS),Kevin Champ(LHP), and Jason Adam(RHP).
Our top 30 looks good IMO.
Isn’t next years draft class suppose to be loaded?
