Around SBN: Roy Nelson Willing to Pay for His Next Opponent's Drug Test

The 2010 Futures Game Thread

Posted for your enjoyment . . .batting practice is now over, and Frankie Piliere tweeted that he was most impressed by "Hosmer, Alonso, Moustakas, Brown, Trout, Lawrie, Romine".

Starting lineups for the teams this evening, ruthlessly stolen from Baseball America:

World Team

2b Brett Lawrie
ss Ozzie Martinez
1b Yonder Alonso
3b Alex Liddi
lf Carlos Peguero
rf Wilkin Ramirez
c Wilin Rosario
cf Gorkys Hernandez
dh Francisco Peguero

Starting Pitcher: Simon Castro

U.S. Team
lf Desmond Jennings
ss Dee Gordon
3b Mike Moustakas
rf Domonic Brown
dh Eric Hosmer
c Hank Conger
cf Brett Jackson
1b Logan Morrison (well, I guess that's why he wasn't in Iowa City after John drove 250 miles . . .)
2b Drew Cumberland

Starting Pitcher: Jeremy Hellickson

So, who are we most looking forward to seeing, if only for a few blissful ABs or a couple of innings?

did you guys see how fast Ben Revere was?

by mrkupe on Jul 11, 2010 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

The ESPN gun was slow

GameDay had all of Lyles’ fastballs at 91-92mph. I noticed the TV gun was slower than expected on other prospects too.

Lyles looked great IMO and could add more velocity with some tweaks to his mechanics + simply maturing and getting stronger.

by OremLK on Jul 11, 2010 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Also, his changeup was fantastic

Plus pitch IMO. Curve was inconsistent but flashed above avg. with ability to spot for strikes.

by OremLK on Jul 11, 2010 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

k

Now I need somebody to tell me that Lyles was sitting 87 MPH with terrible secondary stuff to balance this opinion out.

by mrkupe on Jul 11, 2010 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm inclined to believe the GameDay gun

Considering the ESPN gun looked slow on every prospect.

What did you not like about the secondary stuff? Particularly the change. The curve was inconsistent but showed a lot of potential with a couple of good ones.

by OremLK on Jul 11, 2010 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I was joking

Change looks good. Curve was decent all things put together, skeptical of going anywhere near a plus on that for now though. I just don’t see enough here to go more than No. 3 starter for the moment, maybe a good one, but yeah. Just a lot of solid-but-not great stuff across the board, although he has an out pitch which is good to see. I’m going to make it a point to see at least one of his starts before too long, might grade up from there based on what I see. I want more looks over more innings.

Not much fun to watch most of the rest of that team, although I wouldn’t mind some more looks at Koby Clemens and J.B. Shuck.

by mrkupe on Jul 11, 2010 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Fair enough

I see Lyles as a borderline no. 2 so we’re not that far apart in our opinion.

Anyway, as for CC players of interest… well, the bullpen has some guys to watch. Villar and Meszaros are my favorites but Lo and Nevarez have the best stuff.

I also think Gaston is an underrated athlete… he’s pretty good out in RF from what I’ve seen. I think that CC ballpark is disguising his power a little; the wind conditions make it tough on LHB. I predict he’ll do better when he hits the PCL.

by OremLK on Jul 11, 2010 10:25 PM EDT up reply actions

various Hooks

I had Meszaros noted as a nice arm, 92-94, touched 98 once but that might have been a gun fluke. Would need to check my notes on Villar but wasn’t all that impressed from what I remember.

Gaston’s power is probably being a little suppressed, as he has a very solid physical build and loft in his swing. The problem is that he doesn’t appear to be much of a pure hitter, and his power isn’t good enough to make up for that.

The really interesting thing about Gaston? He has an absolute cannon in RF, just an awesome arm. If the hitting doesn’t pick up for him, I’d think about turning him around.

by mrkupe on Jul 11, 2010 11:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Gaston

Interesting thought on turning him around. You were implying catcher, right?

There aren’t a lot of positives about his offensive performance this year, but one thing I really like is that’s he’s cut down on the strikeouts. He struck out too much last year, 27%, but his strikeout rate is down under 22% this season.

by OremLK on Jul 11, 2010 11:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I was thinking possibly pitching, actually

He’s not tall but I think his upper body strength and athleticism would serve him well there. You could think about him as a C, but I’d rather give him a season in Round Rock in the OF before I started doing anything drastic.

I’m thinking he might have made some adjustments to make more contact at the expense of power, as the power numbers shouldn’t have fallen off THAT much, Lancaster or not. He makes for an interesting comparison with Koby Clemens, who obviously is having a pretty decent go of it in transitioning to AA level competition.

by mrkupe on Jul 12, 2010 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Pitching, huh?

Interesting… would be a pretty big change for a guy of his age. I assume you were just thinking as a relief arm?

by OremLK on Jul 12, 2010 12:50 AM EDT up reply actions

yep

Wouldn’t be unprecedented though. I just thought he looked pretty fringy and that he’d be more of an AAAA hitter even in the best case. Given that the arm is easily his best tool, it’s something to be considered. At the very least I’d be interested in seeing just how hard he can throw from a mound.

by limozeen on Jul 12, 2010 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

He will be better than that

Lyles will throw harder and will have better secondary stuff than Radke did. A rich man’s Radke, maybe.

by OremLK on Jul 12, 2010 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah Really

Radke threw between 89-91 consistently with a plus changeup(one of the best in baseball during his time), an average curveball and outstanding command. That’s pretty much what I saw out of Jordan Lyles except with more development needed all around.

Radke ended his career with 148 wins and a 4.22 ERA. He could have easily won a lot more games if he wasn’t for some awful Twins teams. If you’re expecting Lyles to be better than that then you should be prepared to be disappointed.

Lyles is a #3-4 type starter.

Fastball was right about average then, so not terrible. Stock holds.

by mrkupe on Jul 11, 2010 8:08 PM EDT up reply actions

That's ridiculous

You can say the velocity was average, 50 on the scouting scale, but you have to factor in movement and command as well.

The fastball plays as a 60-65ish pitch already when you factor in movement and command to both sides of the plate. Potential 70 pitch if the velocity develops.

Changeup 55 future 65, curve 40 future 60, slider 40 future 40.

Throw in plus pitchability and you have a future no. 2 starter IMO.

Really?

Here are some of the pitchers with velocity sitting below 92mph this year:

Below 92mph:
Chris Carpenter
Chad Billingsley
Tim Lincecum
Jake Peavy
Matt Cain
Adam Wainwright
Dan Haren

by OremLK on Jul 11, 2010 9:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Key phrase being "this year"

Lyles was also pitching in a relief appearance where velocity jumps about 2-3MPH. He’s a good prospect, but I don’t see an elite one.

by Jeff Reese on Jul 11, 2010 10:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Velocity doesn't jump 2-3mph in a relief appearance for starting pitchers.

That may be true for relief pitchers, but I think you’ll find that for most starters, first inning velocity doesn’t differ much from average velocity. Many starting pitchers take an inning or two to reach their peak velocity, in fact, then taper off again toward the end of their start. It just depends on the player.

So anyway, let’s explore the career average velocities of some no. 1/no. 2 starting pitchers. (I don’t think Lyles will be an ace without significant improvement to his fastball or secondary stuff, but I think a low end no. 2 is very possible.)

Roy Halladay: 92.1mph
Yovani Gallardo: 92.0mph
Chad Billingsley: 91.7mph
Chris Carpenter: 91.6mph
Jake Peavy: 91.6mph
Dan Haren: 91.3mph
Javier Vasquez: 91.1mph
John Lackey: 91.1mph
Tim Hudson: 90.9mph
Adam Wainwright: 90.5mph
James Shields: 90.4mph
Derek Lowe: 88.4mph

This is a skewed sample. That’s intentional; I’m just trying to make a point, not do a scientific study.

Velocity matters, but some of you guys are overstating its importance, and overestimating the average velocity of starting pitchers in the majors leagues. Very few starters throw harder than 93mph on average; much fewer than there are teams in MLB.

by OremLK on Jul 11, 2010 11:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Lyles could be an exception

but generally speaking in these types of settings we see starters get an extra MPH or two on their fastball because they’re only throwing 1 inning so they don’t have to hold anything back.

http://bullpenbanter.com

by gatling on Jul 11, 2010 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Indeed

Here’s just one major league example:

John Smoltz:

2002: 95.1
2003: 95.2
2004: 95.3
2005: 92.3
2006: 92.7

Yes there are more things to pitching than velocity, but you have to one hell of a pitcher to be more than a mid-rotation guy and be sitting in the high 80s.

by mrkupe on Jul 11, 2010 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay, fine, please excuse my joking reference

Lyles is not a premium prospect because he doesn’t light up the gun. That said, he locates, he changes speeds, and he does it without a lot of effort, and as an Astros fan w/ very low expectations, I’ll take it.

yeah, awesome velocity

Curve showed promise. Some noted the lack of movement but 99 thrown for a strike works for me. Would be interested to see if as a starter he cuts the velocity and gets more life.

As for whether or not I’ll be able to see him . . .iffy, but you never know. I’m a long way from OKC. Texas League stuff is going to take priority though.

The best part about Scheppers

is he didn’t start pitching until late. He pitced his senior year of high school, then went to Fresno State as a shortstop. His freshman year there he ended up pitching 15 innings as a reliever. His sophomore year he threw 93 innings, then 70 innings as a junior, 19 for St. Paul, and 50 so far for the Rangers. So he has all of 247 innings at the collegiate level or higher. He really is just learning how to pitch. It is impressive how quickly he is improving, especially his curve.

because the 2009 version featured more impact pitching. I recall being pretty impressed with Kelly, Drabek, Bumgarner, Latos, Tillman and Parker on the U.S. and Chacin, Feliz and Mejia on the World. Finally getting a real chance to watch the game

Only the first two innings so far, but here is what I noticed:

Conger moves pretty well behind the plate and did a good job of blocking pitches. His arm looked pretty good too when he tried to catch Rosario straying off 1B. The throw to 2B on the SB attempt wasn’t good, but I figure Rosario’s interference had a lot to do with that.

Noesi’s curve didn’t look very sharp to me at all. I need to go back and look for his changeup, the announcers talked it up a good bit but off the top of my head I don’t remember seeing one. Velocity was solid on the FB.

Isn’t Castro a guy mentioned as not having a starter’s build? I didn’t really see that to be honest. I was expecting him to be smaller based on those comments. Does look like he could do some extra work strengthening his legs.

Can we get some announcers who know something about these guys next year? I know some people find KLaw to be pretentious, but he has knowledge about these guys. My favorite comments were the one about whether the Royals would play Moustakas at SS or 3B, Sutcliffe’s comment about Cumberland and Noesi facing each other since they’re both in AA(totally different leagues, not likely to face off again until the bigs), and finally the one about the Angels looking for more offense behind the plate. I don’t get to sit down and watch too many games anymore, and when I do I’m usually doing something else and tuning the announcers out. Today I was totally focused on the game and was so irritated by the commentary. One more hilarious comment, the 84 MPH “fastball” Castro threw…just wow.

Sure

I’m going to try and post as I get through the game. Probably by Saturday I’ll get all the way through it, lol.

castro

He’s just really gangly. I think his biggest problem starting-wise is that (as you’ve probably been able to tell) his delivery requires strong balance and coordination. I’m not sure the command is ever going to be consistently excellent with him.
