strats looks

pretty filthy…fastball sitting 96-100 and a wipe out curve

by miraclemets on Jun 8, 2010 8:24 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed

Watching the game on MLB.tv and he’s hitting 101 mph in the 6th. His curve is sitting around 82 mph. LaRoche almost jumped out of the box on one of them. I’m very impressed with how he has handled everything.

Strasburg's pitch breakdown thru 6

He’s throwing 3 pitches: the fastball, the curve, and the changeup.

His FB is sitting 96-99, has hit 101 once, command has improved as the game has gone on. Throwing this about 2/3 of the time.

He’s thrown the curve throughout the count, about 1/4 of the time, and it is every bit as good as advertised, about 79 mph with a true 12-6 break, not quite at the Gregg Olson/Bert Blyleven level but damn impressive and I have no idea how on earth you can sit on it.

Finally, he’s thrown about 8-9 changeups, which are just ridiculous: 91 mph with wicked downward movement. A 91 mph change. I have nothing more to say on this.

Command

Perhaps he was a bit nervous at the start of the game …

Nolan Ryan's 5714 K's

I think Strasburg breaks Ryans K record by the All Star Break next year!

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.

by Savoy on Jun 8, 2010 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

11 ks through 6

Only the third SP to k 11 in 6 innings or less this year. Sounds like it should be an impressive list to be in their company

The other two? Max Scherzer and Chuck Haeger.

Dunn HR

Hope that’s enough to give Stras the win. He deserves it.

by TFelsmaier on Jun 8, 2010 8:35 PM EDT reply actions

I should add

that the Delwyn Young HR was on a good pitch, one of those changeups low in the zone.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2010 8:36 PM EDT reply actions

yeah, that was good hitting.

by JP_Frost on Jun 8, 2010 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

1 more inning??

i think they should with the 2 run lead

by miraclemets on Jun 8, 2010 8:38 PM EDT reply actions

I wouldn't.

If the team blows the lead, they blow the lead. No sense being anything other than uber-cautious.

nobody

warming up in the pen for the nats right now

Pitch limit

He’s supposed to go somewhere between 90-95 pitches.

by TFelsmaier on Jun 8, 2010 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions

i read 100

but storen just got up and started to throw

by miraclemets on Jun 8, 2010 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions

The gun just showed

103 MPH

http://sportingballs.blogspot.com/

by TFelsmaier on Jun 8, 2010 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions

the MASN gun

just clocked Strasburg at 103.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2010 8:48 PM EDT reply actions

He's good, but he ain't that good

Touched 100 twice according to Pitch f/x and had a bunch of 99 readings, which is still unheard of for a starter. His FB looks a lot like Ubaldo’s except with 2 extra MPH on it. Should be a lot of fun to watch.

i mean WOW

words cannot describe this outing

by miraclemets on Jun 8, 2010 8:52 PM EDT reply actions

Re:

I’ve never seen anything like him. Kerry Wood in the beginning when he was on was really really good. Strasburg is like Kerry + 2-3 MPH and a better changeup. It’s sick.

by Dfarth on Jun 8, 2010 8:52 PM EDT reply actions

if I were a hitting coach

The only thing I can think of to do is to treat Strasburg’s changeup as if it were a sinking, heavy, 2SFB and tell my hitters to sit on that, because it’s at least possible to hit. The problem is that the fastball and curve are unhittable and so he’s thrown the change like <10% of the time.

So yeah. Wow.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2010 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions

but other than that

I would preach 1) keep the bat on your shoulders and 2) bunt a lot

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2010 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions

i would sit one pitch, one location

and then just take anything else. If nothing else, it’ll at least make him throw a lot of pitches and could create a situation where instead of facing him for 7-8 innings, you get him for 5-6 and the Nats pen for 3-4

by biggentleben on Jun 8, 2010 8:53 PM EDT reply actions

maybe curt schilling

was right when he said the moment stratsburg steps on the field he will be the best pitcher in baseball

by miraclemets on Jun 8, 2010 8:54 PM EDT reply actions

ummm, that's a little preemptive

there are still guys I’d take (U-baldy, Halladay, Lincecum, etc.) but I could see Stras being the best by midseason next year if he’s still doing what he’s doing now. I want to wait and see if he can still put up these numbers after hitters have adjusted to him, and if he is able to consistently pitch deep into games, and if his health looks aiight

by gore51 on Jun 8, 2010 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

semantics

Schilling didn’t say he’d take Strasburg over any of them, but that it’s possible he could be the best the moment he steps on the field.

And while it may take a year before people are ready to annoint him as the best pitcher, with his arsenal of pitches, velocity, and control, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that we’ll look back at his numbers at the end of the season, and he will have put up the best numbers of any pitcher in baseball.

by Galt on Jun 8, 2010 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

ah, i see. misinterpreted that.

It could happen. I wouldn’t bank on it, and I don’t see it, but there’s maybe a 5% chance Schilling nailed it then.

by gore51 on Jun 8, 2010 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions

the only thing it appears that's going to stop him is himself

hopefully he has a healthy future, because that seems to be the only thing in his way to enshrining himself as one of the best pitchers in recent memory. His control is much much much better than I thought it would translate to professional baseball and even the major league level.

i’ve never really seen this type of stuff on anyone before. unreal.
he can pitch 128 mph but that breaking pitch is what sets him apart from almost anyone…breathtaking debut,.

by tigerpop on Jun 8, 2010 8:59 PM EDT reply actions

Watching the Yankees game at the same time as Stras

Phil Hughes has some great “stuff”, but compared to Starsburg, it looks like nothing

by nyy601 on Jun 8, 2010 9:02 PM EDT reply actions

okay, so what is more surprising

1) Strasburg strikes out 2 batters an inning in his debut

2) Strasburg walks no batters over 7 innings in his debut

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2010 9:03 PM EDT reply actions

+1

especially after some initial (understandable!) wildness in the first few innings.

Admittedly, this Pirates team is basically a AAA lineup, but… still.

the nerves, combines with the hype and no bb’s?? phenominal.

by miraclemets on Jun 8, 2010 9:12 PM EDT up reply actions

also, this isn't hyped at all

but Jeff Niemann is throwing a rather nifty 1-hit shutout thru 6. I believe he’s the last undefeated starter in the AL.

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2010 9:03 PM EDT reply actions

Niemann has really become a good MLB pitcher

I’m glad, too, because there was a time where I had nearly completely given up on him.

Hello.

by killa3312 on Jun 8, 2010 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

why?

The Rays kept him in the minors forever, but he’s always been a pretty decent pitcher at the very least, just a lot of nagging injuries.

by mrkupe on Jun 8, 2010 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I think the deal with Niemann

is that he’s 200 feet tall, and you look at his body type, and you expect him to be overpowering, and he’s not. In fact, Niemann hasn’t been a hard-thrower since before his Rice days; his FB sits 91. But he throws four above-average pitches for strikes, and he’s really become a complete pitcher.

He’ll probably always be underrated. Off the top of my head, he kind of reminds me of Andy Benes.

prediction

on WFAN tomorrow, at least one caller will say “Hey, the Yanks oughta trade for dis Strasburg guy, send Washington a coupla prospects.”

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2010 9:15 PM EDT reply actions

Too bad they don't have Melky anymore

Melky was always the catch-all lynchpin of every Yankee fan created trade.

don't forget Ian Kennedy...

between Kennedy and Melky, they could work a fantasy trade for anyone.

then he probably wouldn’t mind trading Jason Hirsh for him.

According to baseball-reference.com, no P has ever struck out 14+ batters on so few pitches. Javier Vazquez threw 96 pitches on 4/9/03.

hate to use a cliche adjective

but Strasburg was electricfying and terrifying at the same time. amazed at what he did…I’d like to see what he can do against the Phillies’ lineup when they are hitting….but even so, amazing. glad he’s a National. that franchise needs a lift and it looks like they might have gotten one.

Looking ahead ...

Stras plus a fully functional Jordan Zimmermann will be a very nice 1-2.
