Update

I got two hours of sleep last night and am at my last legs here. I will have more commentary tomorrow. Love the Red Sox draft. I think the Blue Jays have done well too.

In the meantime, here is some fresh thread for you.

Disappointed in Reds Draft

1st RD
I would have passed on Grandal since Mesoraco has finally emerged as a legit prospect and selected the 2nd best LHP in the draft in Chris Sale.

2nd RD
As much as I like LaMarre and his upside, he’s not an organizational need. I personally would have selected Derek Dietrich (Ohio boy) here.

3rd RD
The Dietrich pick would of allowed the Reds to focus on talent here and I’m sure the Padres were very happy to see the Reds pass on Reed as he was picked right after.

So…
                     REDS REDS SHADOw
1St RD Y. Grandal © vs. C. Sale (LHP)
2nd RD R. LaMarre (OF) vs. D. Dietrich (SS)
3rd RD D. Lohman (SS) vs. A. Reed (RHP)
4th RD B. Greene (2B) vs. J. Paxton (LHP)

Which draft do you like better?

by Havok1517 on Jun 8, 2010 6:55 PM EDT reply actions

4th RD

I would of much rather had the lefty and former UK pitcher Paxton over a offensively lackluster Greene.

Grandal was the best get

for Walt’s preference of a polished college guy. And Mesoraco has struggled mightily (yes, SSS) since the promotion, so let’s not anoint him yet. Havok, I’m with you on the top of the draft after that. My only hope is that they’re down on the level of talent this year and are planning to go full bore in 2011. And lest we forget, Aroldis Chapman was not cheap…

What do you think of the Cards draft thus far, John?

1. Cox
1S. Blair
1S. Jenkins
2. Swaggerty
12. A. Wilson

I could very easily see 4 of the 5. Obviously Wilson is an extreme longshot. I also like Tuivailala.

Baseball makes the world go 'round, or at least in my world it does.

like it

I like it, although I doubt Wilson will sign

by John Sickels on Jun 8, 2010 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions

The funny thing is that...

Cox wants over 3 million more than Wilson from what I’ve heard. I’ve heard Pedro Alvarez money for Cox and 3 milion for Wilson. I’d have to imagine either that’s not true or Cox comes down quite a bit. Otherwise expect the Cardinals to sign Wilson and take the 26th pick next year.

As for the rest of the draft:
Nick Longmire is above average across the board except hitting ability. Kinda reminds me of another 5th round pick…Michael Taylor. It’s not likely we’ll get that lucky but he could be decent.

Bibona, Lyons and Gast are three decent college lefties that could be good against wood bats.

Then the Cardinals took 6 high schoolers between rounds 10 and 20 which will never happen again likely. Corderious Dodd looks so bad in his draft video it’s funny. But he has serious power potential. He needs a lot of coaching.
I think Anthony Bryant is the best of the bunch. He’s a good looking hitter.

Richard Mendoza looks like a decent high school arm. He’s got 90-92 heat though a loopy curve that will need tightening.

A very good draft for the Birds.

3 HS hitters in a row- surprising
Yordy Cabrera
Aaron Shipman
Chad Lewis

Tony Thompson and AJ Kirby Jones power college bats

Lot of Jays fans going ballistic over the lack of a headline pick

but i’m very much liking the all-in on HS pitching upside and athletic infielders. If we can sign 2 of Thon/Cotto/Bryant with the pitchers we’ll have had a great draft.

by TtD on Jun 8, 2010 8:17 PM EDT reply actions

I was among the mildly irritated...

…but it’s somewhat heartening to hear positive reactions from other quarters…Keith Law aside.

by royshowell on Jun 8, 2010 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions

It seems like there's a bit of a split of opinions...

As you mention, it seems like Andy Seiler and John Sickels really loved our draft, while Keith Law and I believe someone at Baseball America (just saw it mentioned, haven’t read the review) weren’t big fans.

Personally, I’m one of those Jays fans really upset with the draft. It just seems to me like they didn’t take risks, didn’t get a lot of upside. The only one of the early picks I like is the Asher Woj pick, which was a steal at #41 I thought. In a bubble, I don’t really mind the Aaron Sanchez pick either. But as a package, I’m hugely disappointed. I’ll wait for the full reviews though, and hopefully they’ll change my mind.

by doron on Jun 9, 2010 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

they had a very solid draft

Lots of good arms, a couple of good prep position players in Hawkins and Sweeney, Marcus Knecht was a good bat for them to grab. It wasn’t filled with boom or bust players, but there is definitely some upside in the class. If they can get one of Thon or Bryant to sign (both are real longshots, IMO), the class will be truly excellent . . .but it’s a good start for the AA regime in any case.

by mrkupe on Jun 9, 2010 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Perhaps...

I definitely agree with you on some of the specifics in there. I like Marcus Knecht a ton – I was actually sitting in class with the draft-tracker on and did a huge fist pump when I saw his name pop-up, and I do like Kris Bryant a lot too, again, if he’s signable.

I think overall though, perhaps you’re exactly right calling it a “solid” draft, which I think is part of the issue. Jays fans had been prepared, through media reports here and even direct quotes from our high up baseball execs, that this draft was going to be a home run, a massive infusion of high ceiling talent to the system. Hopefully John and other experts and can prove me wrong, but I just don’t see that as being anywhere close to how the draft turned out.

by doron on Jun 9, 2010 12:34 AM EDT up reply actions

22 HS picks, 6 JUCO picks….and this draft doesn’t have enough “high upside” picks? I’m not sure how that makes much sense.

This was a weak draft. The Jays identified the HS pitching as the strength and attacked that.

by metafour on Jun 9, 2010 12:52 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah, I thought they did a fine job

A Wilson or even a Castellanos would not have been worth the effect that signing would have had on the rest of the class. They do have a couple of options to sink some money into if they’re so inclined, but nothing in a position that would make or break the class.

I’m quite fond of Aaron Sanchez and Griffin Murphy in particular. Sanchez needs to clean up the command but has a great combination of now stuff and projection to improve on that stuff. Griffin is a pitchability guy with solid velocity from the left side that is steadily rising. And what better way to anchor a prep-heavy class than a relatively safe guy at the top of the draft in McGuire?

by mrkupe on Jun 9, 2010 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions

no, that's legitimate

But it depends on your perspective. From the Jays’ perspective, they’re probably thrilled with what they’ve got, and I’m sure they’re really looking forward to all of the talent that they have to work with. They might not have gone for the really heavy hitters, but I don’t think I saw a single pick out of the Jays that I would have considered an overdraft – they did not skimp out, which is definitely to their credit with that many picks. When you see the final spending total, I think you’ll be amazed at how much they had to spend to get everything done this year.

by mrkupe on Jun 9, 2010 12:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I seriously think your under appreciating the draft Doron.

Yes you don’t have that blockbuster overslot signing but EVERY pick in the first 18 rounds has potential to improve on their projections if the coaching is right. All dropped for some assumed weakness (McGuire his lack of a true out pitch atm having lost 3mph on his fastball, Wod his control and lack of a quality changeup, Dyson his health concerns, Thon his signability and roughness) that the coaches have the chance to work out. With the number of HS picks we grabbed, we only need to get maybe 15-20% of them right and up to potential and you’ve had an amazing draft.

It’s a ‘potential’ draft, no existing semi-polished studs but all the rough diamonds a team could ever want from a draft. Following this draft class in the minors and watching the coaches develop them is going to be a true pleasure.

by TtD on Jun 9, 2010 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions

Should also throw in

that we grabbed Hechavarria and appear to be in on the top mexican prospect Heredia, and supposedly have Adonis Carmona locked up, another A talent. If we get one of those two with Hech to complement this draft it’s going to be a ridiculous year.

by TtD on Jun 9, 2010 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Sanchez

is one of the things to unequivocally like about this draft, imo, doron. Very interesting arm.

by blackoutyears on Jun 9, 2010 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Yankees

What were they thinking? How do you have a 200 million dollar payroll, yet refuse to pick the best available talent, and go for a cheap pick like Culver?
1. Culver
2. Gumbs – really?
3. Segedin – good pick

I am just struggling to find a reason to be excited by the draft as a Yankees fan. I mean, it would be nice to have a front office as committed to the draft as the Red Sox office is.

Sox killed it

I would be thrilled if I was up there. I might start following them anyway.

Astros kicked me in the balls again.

My first mistake was assuming you knew what I was talking about.

SHAMUS!

Long time dude. Good to see you still kicking around

My buddy and I were just laughing our butts off at the Astros these last two days. I cheer for them, I really do, but it’s hard to take them seriously these days. I’m really not a fan of Deshields Jr, not the kind of guy they should be targeting in that spot, IMO

Disappointed with the Mets

While I did not mind Harvey at #7 even though he was not my personal BPA, I would have liked to have seen the Mets be more aggressive with their picks. Forsythe, Vaughn, and Walters look like overdrafts early and with Forsythe in particular, the 3rd Round pick is protected so why not gamble on someone who may have floated 2nd Round or Supplemental bonus demands with that pick and try and get him signed. That being said, I did think they got a couple of guys yesterday that might turn out to be sleepers. Brian Harrison has battled a lot of injuries, but if healthy he would have gone much earlier. Sheppard and Goeddel both have good stuff, though I wonder if Goeddel will sign and a couple of others have higher upsides than you traditionally find in that area

by mtk52983 on Jun 9, 2010 7:03 AM EDT reply actions

This is their typical draft strategy: cheap out.

I’m not sure how Mets fans can stand a big-market team that drafts like they’re the Pirates of 4-5 years ago.

by metafour on Jun 9, 2010 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Indians

Really like their draft. They took some serious fliers in the late rounds and I wonder how many they will sign, but if they can get most of them, it’s a very strong draft. Love the Wolters, Aviles and Burch Smith picks. A lot of upside drafted this year, which is nice for a change.

by JP_Frost on Jun 9, 2010 8:29 AM EDT reply actions

Could be an A- Draft

Not only with the names you’ve said, but I think Lavisky, Cooper, and Gause could be great signings, as well. Besides for a few of the tired rhetoric of college filler, the Tribe went outside of their comfort zone and really attacked this draft with young, high-upside, potentially hard to sign athletes. Love that they did that, and hope to see that trend continue.

They’re going to need a good 7.5+ million to sign the guys they want, though.

by RogerDorn on Jun 9, 2010 10:00 AM EDT reply actions

Agreed. Hopefully they have an $8M draft budget this year.

by JP_Frost on Jun 9, 2010 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Rays

You can see my shadow Rays draft, made before each of the actual Rays picks. The only real objection I have is budgetary; I would have liked to have seen the team leverage their multiple protected picks into at least one high-upside overslot signing (e.g., Austin Wilson).

On the other hand, the Rays picked the consensus (or near-consensus) BPA at 1.17 (Josh Sale), 1.31 (Justin O’Conner, with whom they reportedly already have a deal), 2.42 (Drew Vettleson), 2.79 (Derek Dietrich), and 6.191 (Jesse Hahn). That’s pretty awesome by any stretch.

In the mid-rounds, they picked up HS OF Michael Lorenzen (7th) and OF Deshun Dixon (10th). In the late rounds, they grabbed a few interesting guys like Matt Spann, Kevin Patterson, Jimmy Patterson, and all-stathead, all-cool-name fave Phil Wunderlich.

I like what the team did. I wish they’d grabbed an Austin Wilson, or even a Garin Cecchini, but if they sign everyone in the top 6 rounds, this will be an impressive haul.
