There are few interesting guys on the board to open day two.

Stetson Allie, Brandon Workman, AJ Cole & Brett Eibner to name a few

BPAs

Brandon Workman is an obvious pick to the Nats; he’s got the highest combination of talent plus signability. I’ll be shocked if they don’t take him at 12:01 today.

After that, you have three guys who are going to be slight over-slot picks, but who (at least in my knowledge) have not been linked to any outrageous demands or signability issues: SS Yordy Cabrera, LHP James Paxton, and OF Reggie Golden. I’m honestly pretty indifferent as to what order those 3 guys go, but they strike me as the clear next tier unless there’s some info out there on signability to which I am not privy.

After those 4 players go, you have a bunch of high-upside, hard-signability guys like Allie, Cole, Austin Wilson and Brian Ragira. You could throw in questions about Brett Eibner’s signability/desire to play — I don’t fully know how to quantify that. I don’t really know where these guys will go (if at all), because I don’t know exactly how hard they are to sign. For example, everything I’ve read says that teams have no shot at signing Ragira away from Stanford, but IF a team had a deal (or semi-deal) in place, you’d expect them to keep it quiet, no?

Beyond those 8 guys, I think there’s still a lot of talent out there: Chad Bettis, DeAndre Smelter, Jesse Hahn, Jedd Gyorko, Jarrett Parker, Sammy Solis, Ryne Stanek, Austin Wates, A.J. Vanegas, Tony Wolters, Garin Cecchini, Rob Rasmussen all come to mind. But I think those guys are all in a distinctly different tier than the 8 guys listed above.

+1

He has some upside, but will probably look like a better draft prospect in three years, and he really wants to go to school. Seems best for everybody involved if he goes to Stanford.

I love what St. Louis has done thus far. I just hope they continue it. I am interested in seeing where Cole and Allie finally land.

Cards

I was also a big fan of the Cards Day 1. You knew they were taking 1 projectable college arm and I am higher on S. Blair than most other projectable arms and feel he fits the mold of the Cards style of pitchers. Then you got the trend we are starting to set in the 1st Rd of what to see who falls and snag him…Cox was our man in that regard. If the power comes around he could be a fixture in STL for some time and will move fairly quickly. Then you got the high upside athlete in Jenkins that will need extra dough and extra time in the minors to refine. But the upside is certainly there. Pleased all around.

Now to Day 2 – With 2 guys that will take overslot to sign from Day 1 I don’t see us going out on a limb to get a guy like Wilson and potentially not Allie or Cole either. But there is a ton of talent that fell to some degree and we have a shot at some solid picks in the next few rounds specifically. If Solis is there at #75 that is a solid pick. Dyson is an injury risk/high upside guy that interests me as well. It is just so hard to say who will be there. But I see us getting at least 1 more upside hitter and then a number of college starters and relievers in Rounds 2-8.

Cabrera

to the Braves @ 53. He’ll be slightly above slot, but not enough to make the Braves back off. He could move to 3B, allowing the Braves to draft some more upside arms and an OF or two in the later rounds.

Allie should be to Atlanta, but he wants TONS of cash. Cole could be nice, but I don’t want Eibner or Workman if I’m a Braves FO member.

I’m looking more and more at positional players in the next two picks. Cabrera at #53 and then Reggie Golden at #70 would allow the Braves to pick the up-side arms we so crave.

by apoxonbothyourhouses on Jun 8, 2010 8:23 AM EDT reply actions

I would be shocked

if Cabrera makes it past the next 3-5 picks. He and Workman are the two guys that really jump off the board as best players available without huge overslot demands (e.g., Wilson, Allie, Ragira).

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2010 9:57 AM EDT up reply actions

see above

I like Eibner a lot. I wonder if questions about his desire to hit (vs. teams’ desire to have him pitch) constitute “signability” issues. Hard to tell as an outsider. On talent alone, he’s obviously way up there.

Similar to Stock last year

I take him as a position player, give him some time to see if it works, and convert him back to the mound if it doesn’t.

Royals

I like the Colon pick; with no clear BPA and the available arms all having big questions getting a close to ML guy at a tough position was a smart draft pick, especially if it frees up money for later in the draft.

by BlueEyes_Austin on Jun 8, 2010 9:19 AM EDT reply actions

Agree

Even if he moves off SS to 2B and becomes a .340 OBA/.420 SLG type player, that’s a stable, not spectacular guy to have at that position. And I think he has a good chance to be better than that. Gives the Royals some stability, won’t bust the bank, and when there is no clear BPA, that’s not a bad move to make. Its not like past year where I was screaming for Justin Smoak or Matt Wieters or whoever. There just wasn’t anyone out there I was just dying to have at #4.

But many, there could be some good first round talent available to them at #54. They have a chance to grab someone good if they’re willing to spend money.

Mets

I would have preferred Sale (either one) or Whitson, but I can live with Harvey for the Mets. I am thrilled they did not use the pick on Cox who profiles as Bill Mueller/Blake DeWitt at best and the Mets have David Wright at 3B and Ruben Tejada/Reese Havens waiting in the wings at 2B. Havens is having some contact issues at AA, but he is absolutely raking the ball right now and could very well be the Mets starting 2B sometime in 2011

A's

About a month ago when Choice’s name was first tied to Oakland, I thought guy would be an overdraft at #10 and I still think he’s a late 1st/supplemental bat in a 2008 class or 2011 class, but in this class there aren’t really many stronger options once you’ve gone through Harper-Taillon-Machado. I hope Choice is a coachable guy who will clean up the mechanics over the next few years. His wrist strength and bat speed are amazing and if he can use them in an optimal way, he could be a star.

Lot of guys I thought would be gone after Day One are still there, and I think the A’s will be in a good position at #60.

“I thought guy would be an overdraft at #10.”

This isn’t the NFL; talking about “overdrafts” among guys who are basically ranked the same doesn’t make much sense. It isn’t an overdraft to pick a guy at 10 who might fall to 20 or 30.

by BlueEyes_Austin on Jun 8, 2010 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Interesting

The A’s draft of Weeks was seen as a “reach”. Is there much difference between a reach and an overdraft?

by asyouwish33 on Jun 8, 2010 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions

It doesn’t make sense to think about “reaches” either. Picking a guy who could realistically drop until your next pick—that’s a reach. Picking a guy you like who folks think will drop ten or 15 slots—not a reach.

Especially considering you can't trade picks.

Blue Jays

I was disappointed with how the first day went for the Jays, but reviews from people who know way more than me have lightened me up about it. I guess it comes down to the fact that drafting four RHP’s just isn’t very exciting.

Regardless, I think fans would go wild if the Jays could add a player like Austin Wilson or Yordy Cabrera today.

by doron on Jun 8, 2010 10:08 AM EDT reply actions

I'm completely shocked at the reaction from Blue Jays fans

I just don’t see what is wrong with the draft that they’ve had so far. I’m not a Deck McGuire guy, but the rest is very solid. RHP is the strength of this draft so why not take it?

by Jeff Reese on Jun 8, 2010 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions

I think the Deck pick has a lot to do with it

We were told the team was looking for “upside and athletes” all along, and then picking McGuire, one of the safest arms in the draft, seems to contradict that.

With me at least, when I look at each pick in a bubble, I don’t mind them at all. Woj at 41 is a great pick. I see the logic with McGurire, and I know they seem to think Aaron Sanchez has big upside. It’s just the total package seems a bit underwhelming.

It’s the definition of picking the best player available I suppose, not caring if they all play the same position, and if it’s a position you already have a surplus in.

by doron on Jun 8, 2010 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions

maybe it's the crazy rumor

that the Jays had $15MM to spend on the draft? I never saw a good source for that, it seemed insane, and it doesn’t seem true.

Of course, they could pop Wilson, Allie, and Ragira in the next 3 rounds and prove me wrong. :)

by AndrewTorrez on Jun 8, 2010 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions

they didn't really need to draft over slot

Sanchez and Wojo were excellent value for the supplemental round. #38 had to be a signable pick. Maguire was someone they liked over another signable pick in Sale.

by ayjackson on Jun 8, 2010 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

my reply was directed to the question "why are Jays fans unhappy?"

I think they had a perfectly fine draft yesterday. The only explanation I can offer for unhappiness is if a Blue Jays fan had wildly unrealistic expectations going into the draft.

I love Wojo. I like McGuire. Not totally sold on Aaron Sanchez but it’s no Homer Simpson. A solid day.

Wow

I really liked the Jays draft. I know Jays fans think they have too many middling arms, but you can always find a market for pitching, even mediocre pitching.

I certainly understand the logic...

That you can always trade young arms for a big bat but that’s something you do when you get into contention. The Jays are gonna need to find a way to find young bats that can lead them before any of that. I just think a lot of people expected this draft to be our chance to find those young, impact bats.

by doron on Jun 8, 2010 10:53 AM EDT up reply actions

In the Jays defense

They did just add a couple of nice bats for Roy and they did sign Adeiny. Sure, it’s 4 SP before the 2nd, but really, it’s ok.

And

To reply to myself, it’s not like this draft was swimming in hitters. That’s the hurt of Deck: J. Sale or even Grandal there might have been more what the team needed, but it’s not like teams should ever draft for need, esp. when this draft isn’t swimming in upside bats.

Agree

BPA! Go with the draft, not against it.

Astros

I don’t hate this draft so far, the same why I didn’t hate it last year, but it’s still just ok.

Delino Deshields Jr. – I talked myself into liking him. I would have preferred him at 19, but still he has considerable upside: .300 hitter with 10-15 HRs and 50+ SBs and plus defense at second… I seem to think Houston had a guy like that once… HOWEVER, my problem with Deshields at 8 is this: Houston has the eighth pick and the worst farm system in baseball. It seems to me that whoever they take at eight should then be their top prospect and Deshields won’t likely be.

Mike Foltynewicz – I like this pick. I loved in the supplemental, but still like it fifteen picks earlier. He’s got better stuff than Jordan Lyles and gives them a true power arm with #2 upside in the system.

Michael Kvasnicka – He’s still a bit of a mystery to be. However, from what I gather a lot of his stock is dependent uon him playing catcher… and he was drafted as a third basemen. I hear he has a good bat, but I’m not confident how good. Certainly not good enough to become an all-star at third… I guess at worst he’s insurance for Castro, which they do need with little depth at any position—particularly catcher, but did that really need to come at pick 33??

Workman

Apparently his slide is in part due to asking for true first round money, as he reportedly was turning down sandwich round money from teams.
