Chance Ruffin
Anyone else see that K. Law thinks the Reds are ready to take him with the 12th pick? Seems like a big overdraft to me.
Ifs
What if Heyward and Stanton had decided to go to school, what would this draft look like then? Would Harper still be consensus #1?

Am I wrong to hope Oakland DOESN'T take one of O'Conner or Colon?
I want Whitson or Choice, myself. DeShields is intriguing.
"You seen my cell phone?" "What’s it look like?" "Like two horses f***ing. It’s a phone, son. It looks like a phone."
O'Conner wouldn't be a bad pick
I don’t like Colon much at all though, especially since the A’s just took 2 MIs in a row.
What is worth a top ten pick about O'Conner?
Everything I’ve seen says something like “I don’t think he can make good contact”. A no-contact catcher or SS doesn’t sound especially appealing. I like the power and arm though. I prefer O’Conner to Colon.

top ten, slight overdraft perhaps
Big power, great athlete, really impressive raw defensive tools with an awesome arm. I’m usually skeptical of prep catchers being picked early, but O’Connor’s raw power and athleticism gives me hope. If he moved to 3B, he’d probably be a good defender there with nice pop.
do not like deshields
He’s similar to Ben Revere, but you really need to project to get his hitting for average tool anywhere near what Revere is showing.
Might gamble if I had multiple early picks, would not want him as a top 10 overall pick.
Not saying he's my top choice
Just an interesting player. I really like Whitson, but I keep hearing the A’s aren’t on HS pitchers. I really don’t like Colon, but maybe that’s because he’s basically got Mark Ellis as a ceiling.

did you hear the laughter in the background?
They’ve definitely filled the studio compared to years past . . .normally, you could hear a pin drop in there.
This year, it would have to be a large pin.
I refuse to turn the sound on
Harold Reynold’s analysis is the last thing I want to hear.
you're missing some hilarious stuff
including Machado over Harper
wow, Harold Reynolds really needed to read the notes
Saying that Robbie Aviles could be taken today in the preshow was bad enough, but going on and on about how he thinks Harper is okay at 3B or OF, but that what makes him special is that he’s a catcher . . .
harper
Scott Boras is completely right about this. Move Harper to the outfield to spare his knees. Mauer is a once-in-50-years freak.

He didn’t say that Matt Wieters is retarded, he said he “was retarded”, the word used as a verb; his development was retarded due to him never calling games in college.

How does
Pomeranz compare to Sowers projection-wise?
Pomeranz has "less pitches"? Huh?!
Less pitches? Are you kidding, mrkupe? If not, I don’t see how – Pomeranz has a better fastball and a plus-plus curveball, plus a solid average changeup that could be above-average with more refinement.
Sowers, as mentioned, has less of a fastball (the velocities may be about the same depending on who you listen to, as Sowers was supposed to have around an 88-92 to 89-93 fastball when he was drafted out of Vanderbilt, but Pomeranz has considerably more movement, which is why it’s considered to be a plus, overpowering fastball, whereas Sowers’ never was).
Additionally, Sowers was never considered to have plus offspeed stuff of any type. He had essentially average offspeed stuff, possibly with the potential to be better, above-average, but that only describes Pomeranz’s changeup at most. The main difference is that Pomeranz has a plus-plus curveball – Sowers’ offspeed stuff wasn’t and isn’t even close to touching that pitch, thereby making your “less pitches” comment confusing and, in my opinion, incorrect – no offense.
As for the hair volume, I’ll take your word for it, since I haven’t actually seen Pomeranz’s hair up close. I have seen Bieber’s, however, especially when he rammed into that door a few weeks back, and if Pomeranz’s hair is anywhere close to that, that’s pretty impressive, maybe even a “plus” attribute. :-)
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
I do agree with the command comment, though!
Hello again mrkupe,
Sowers was considered to be a control pltcher coming out of Vanderbilt, whereas Pomeranz isn’t considered a control pitcher, though some speculate that his rising BB/9 IP rate throughout the season was due to that strained pectoral muscle he had.
Still, Sowers does have a bit of an edge there, but arguably, I think the Indians have reversed their philosophy in acquiring pitchers over the past few years, first with their trades, and now with their drafting. They are looking to acquire more power arms and mold them into pitchers, whereas they used to look for pitchability and then have them be pinpoint with average stuff (like Sowers and even Huff, etc.). That’s not just Pomeranz this year, but guys like RHP Austin Adams (5th Rd. 2009 Draft) last year, not to mention guys they’ve acquired in trades (Knapp, Hagadone, Price, Masterson, etc.).
That’s not to say they’re just looking for flamethrowers who can’t hit the side of a barn standing right in front of them, but they’re starting to look more for stuff and velocity and not necessarily looking for guys with pinpoint control and marginal to average stuff.
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
holy crap
Shocking (but not unpleasant) to see you around. :)
Pomeranz does have fewer pitches. Sowers had four solid average pitches (curveball was better though) – the fact that he was able to command them all was one of the reasons why he happened to be a good prospect. But as far as effectiveness (or the grades, if you will) of their respective pitches . . .yeah, Pomeranz is clearly superior. Better fastball (like I said), and a better curveball when it’s on, although that the consistency of that pitch has been questioned at times. I’d take Pomeranz’s three pitches over Sowers’ four, as would just about everybody else, so don’t sweat it.
Hard to say on the walks . . .we’ll see, but I think you’d acknowledge that he did walk quite a few guys this year, and that it’s something to be watched. It’s a pretty enticing package from the left side if he’s healthy, and he is definitely not a “low upside” type of player if things work out. He’s not Sowers v. 2.0.
Nice to see you too! ;-)
Hello mrkupe,
Yes, it’s been a while – good to see you and everyone else too! I’ve been busy, but try to stay informed and drop by when I can. :-)
After I wrote my initial post, I thought you might have been referring to Sowers’ 4 pitches (forgot for a bit that he had 4 pitches), whereas Pomeranz having 3 pitches – my bad. When I first read your title, I thought “pitches” meant “quality” pitches, not “pitches that are there, but that are not anything to really write home about” (which is referring more to Sowers’ arsenal).
As you mentioned, Sowers’ curveball was considered to be his best offspeed pitch, a little above-average if I remember correctly, but not really a plus pitch, which I thought was maybe the biggest difference between him and Pomeranz.
As for Pomeranz, yes, the walks are a little concerning – I’d be curious to know how his walk rate was before he suffered that pectoral muscle injury, though I don’t know exactly when he sustained that injury, nor what site would give his start-by-start stats to do a comparison to see if his BB rate was adversely affected after that pectoral muscle injury.
Regardless, if Pomeranz is healthy, I agree that he’s not Sowers v. 2.0, which again seems to indicate the Indians’ change in philosophy when it comes to acquiring/drafting pitchers – they are looking more at power and projectability and making pinpoint command and pitchability secondary (they’d still like pinpoint command and pitchability like any team would, but finding a power package with pinpoint command is like finding a needle in a haystack – perhaps Strasburg or Prior, and we know that Prior didn’t make it due to injuries).
Personally, I would give Pomeranz some time off, perhaps allowing him to pitch in a few games toward the end of the Rookie Level season (mid to late August), or perhaps not letting him pitch until next season. He might not sign until mid-August anyway, but even if he does sign earlier than that (it sounds like he would be more signable than the Top 3 in this draft), I’d still give him a few months before even considering him pitching in any games, just to ensure that that pectoral muscle is fully healed.
Also, perhaps cleaning up his motion (like many professional teams do when working with new pitching prospects) would also enable Pomeranz to have improved command and maybe even more consistent velocity (say, consistent 93-95).
Of course, only time will tell, but certainly, I like the pick, even with the caveat that most say that picks #4-44 are almost identical; it depends on the scouting of the individual organizations themselves to make the calls that will turn out best. I am happy that the Indians weren’t shy about taking Pomeranz after the last-minute buzz about Pomeranz’s falling down the draft boards, since it seems that Pomeranz was a guy they were really after pretty much from the beginning.
Again, good to talk with you, and thanks for clarifying your “pitches” comment – you’re right about Sowers having 4 pitches to Pomeranz’s 3 – my bad. :-)
Take care, keep up the great work, and have a good day!
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.

What the hell? Another college arm? Ghosts of Ricciardi…so much for the dawning of a new era.
Focusing on player type in the draft
was JP’s mistake. Let’s not replicate it here.
I would have prefered J Sale or Cox (I mean, where are the hitters for this team), but they did just get Adeiny for SS (or a good position), and this pitcher does help the rotation. Clearly, the Jays know pitching, and if they ever figure out pitcher health, they might even trade an arm or three for 3B/CF/C help a la the Roy deal.

I’m a bit stunned right now, admittedly. No other way around it. This isn’t even a Colvin case – Colvin was rumored to be sneaking up late first.
That said, his stuff compares relatively well to the college arms in that range. And I’ll give Wilken some BOD – he’s been solid at picking some college arms with the Cubs.
No doubt I’m stunned. Sulking in sorrow? Sorry. low-mid 90’s with 2 good breaking balls is an intriguing enough package that I wouldn’t be sulking in sorrow.

Lack of an effective breaking ball is a concern for a prep RHP getting drafted that high, but he does have an excellent arm and a good feel for his changeup.

he was a good value here
He wasn’t a top of the draft hitter, but in most drafts, this is the tail end of the range in which he’d go.
He has his flaws, but I think he’s been unfairly criticized . . .wasn’t his fault that there aren’t many good college bats this year.

Conspiracy theory: make an offer to Lee. When he turns it down, pocket the pick for next year and save the money for when ownership is more clear next year.
And

That Simpson card still so shiny
on that draft board :D.
Cannot believe that Brentz is still there
with a little coaching he has a really good bat
Supposedly
The Astros have a decent sized budget this year. Castellanos?
If Houston passes on Allie..
the Jays better put that supposed big budget to use!

yeah, I think we're about to learn just how much money they've got
Potential of overslot deals later in the draft or not, they’re not going to find guys as talented as Castellanos or Allie later.
Terrible Pick
There is no way that he wouldn’t be available in second round.

i hate this line of thinking
chances are, your wrong. they aren’t just picking that guy for the hell of it. he’d probably have been gone by their next pick, and they liked him enough that they didn’t want to take that risk.
baseball rules.
It's not they could trade down
to max the value of the pick. This ain’t the NFL. This ain’t Isiah taking Balkman in the first.

I just realized
A.J. Cole is still out there, too
DAMN!!
Are the Jays gonna take ANY bats in this mofo?
Adeiny
does buy them a bit of a pass for a hint. And they did just turf some Roy fellow for hitting prospects.
