2010 all-rookie team
Clearly, we're in the midst of an historic year for rookies. It's pretty astonishing to consider just how strong of a team you could put together with just rookies. I'll try to put together a 25 man roster of the rookies I'd most want on my squad; current year performance is weighted, though preference is given to long term potential. I'm looking for the squad that'll win the most games the rest of the year, with an eye towards giving more playing time to those I think would be long term answers. I'm sure I'll miss some guys, especially in the bullpen.
Lineup:
CF Tyler Colvin
DH Ike Davis
RF Jason Heyward
C Carlos Santana
1B Justin Smoak
LF Michael Stanton
3B Pedro Alvarez
2B Reid Brignac
SS Starlin Castro
Bench: Buster Posey, Brennan Boesch, Austin Jackson, Gaby Sanchez, Alcides Escobar
SP Stephen Strasburg
SP Jaime Garcia
SP Mike Leake
SP Brian Matusz
SP Jake Arrieta
CL Neftali Feliz
RP Sergio Santos
RP Alexi Ogando
RP Jonathan Venters
RP Jenrry Mejia
SW Jonathon Niese
Is this a 2010 playoff team?

I think I'd put Austin Jackson in center
He hasn’t shown much power, but I love the defense that he’s providing. Colvin has been a complete shock this year, and I’m not really sure if I truly believe it
Of Course
Because as everyone on this website knows there is no such thing as a Cubs prospect.
Colvin only has 2 fewer XBH in half the PA. Sure, Jackson’s ISO is about 1/3 of Colvin’s.
Yup, everybody here knew Colvin was a wasted draft pick much like Hayden Simpson because everybody here is smarter than Tim Wilken.
BTW, I find it much, much easier to believe in Colvin’s power than Jackson’s rediculously high .423 BABIP. Once you take away that inflated BA, AJ is a big zero.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

Cool?
I mentioned the lack of power, and said my opinion is based mostly on how well he’s playing CF. I know his BABIP is high, but I don’t think he’s anywhere near finished offensively. Colvin has played what, about 7 games in CF this year? And his track record certainly doesn’t support a .287 ISO.
Colvin's HR Rate is just as ridiculous....
…maybe more so. 28% of his FBs are leaving the yard. The best power hitters in the game are in the low 20s. A sustainable rate is probably half of what he’s putting up.
I'm not buying on Colvin yet, either
And I’m trying to be as optimistic as anyone. I mean, I did watch the kid play a decent center at Wrigley last night, but at the same time he was never really challenged by any play.
The fact of the matter is that if scouts and evaluators believed that Colvin could stick in center field in the first place, he would’ve been regarded as a significantly better prospect. But most viewed him as an eventual corner outfielder, and given his offensive profile, it just wasn’t totally clear that his bat would play if he was a right or left fielder.
Obviously, the bat has come along better than expected, as he’s showing more patience and power, but at the same time he’s having serious issues making contact and as others noted his HR/FB is absolutely unsustainble.
Colvin is having a nice stretch and maybe he’ll emerge from this as a future regular instead of a future fourth outfielder like many had pegged him, but I think that Jackson is far more likely to be a solid everyday CF when everything is said and done.

Ike Davis should be first base
Davis is a better defender than Smoak is

I agree Smoak is a good defender
But i believe Davis is alot better

Smoak
Smoak appears to have the hands to be a good defender, but he isn’t there yet. A lot of Ranger’s fans have been frustrated by his defense while he struggled to hit because Chris Davis was very good defensively.
Meh
After the 1st 2 weeks he’s been really good

This
Davis is overrated by most Rangers fans defensively. He’s good, but not that good.
If you’re picking a rookie all-star team for first half play I guess Davis is a good pick. I’d favor Smoak in the 2d half, and he’s having a much better June but he did start awfully slow.

The rookie needs to stop hitting the ball
right at people.
Thank you Houston for drafting Jason Castro.
Honestly
I’ve never seen someone SO unlucky. He absolutely rips the ball and it will be right at someone consistently. It is hard for anyone who doesn’t watch him play every day to understand how unlucky he has been.
after smoak's first 200 at bats
he was 8 homers, 34 rbi, .340 on base%, 35 walks…and this is with his slow (ie. batting average) start.
So is Daric Barton's
Would you want him as your starting 1B (insert legions of A’s fans responding in rage)?

Uhh.. yeah?
The guy has an OBP near .390 and at the very least he hits a good number of doubles.
I mean, he’s currently fifth among AL first basemen in WAR, so it’s not like this guy has been a problem so far.
Barton may not be a star, but he’s going to stick around this league for a long, long time with those on-base skills.

I actually kind of like Barton...
I was hyping this guy up for years. Unfortunately the power never came and that is what I like out of my first basemen. A .409 slugging doesn’t cut it in my opinion especially for a guy on pace to hit 9 homers. He is a serviceable player but nobody really WANTS Daric Barton as the starting first baseman…….well except for a team starting Casey Kotchman. ;)

I can get over the lack of power
when he’s batting over .280 with an OBP near .390 and he’s an above average defender.
Barton isn’t a star, but he’s better than a good number of guys that are playing everyday right now. He’s just not too prototypical.

Smoak is going to be a star, I thinks.
He’s been able to keep his head above water offensively despite having some truly awful luck, and once the power comes through more often combined with his approach at the plate he’s going to be one of the best hitters in the league.

4th in AL right now in both walk % and LD %
looking good. The walk rate is nearly historic for a rookie if he keeps it up.

Performance-wise at 3B
David Freese probably deserves the nod over Alvarez.

I'm looking mostly from here on out
and Freese has really regressed.
really?

The Pirates are always good for a laugh.
Because we all know 38 ABs is enough to tell if your star prospect is ready for the bigs.
well
Alvarez may be better in the long run, but shouldn’t be your 3B if you want your team to be playoff caliber this year. Unless his stellar defense offsets his sub-.400 OPS.

Sure
But there’s no debate that freese has produced more to this point, and it appears he’s a good bet to end up with better overall numbers from this pt forward, too. That’s not even factoring defense.
Would I rather have Alvarez? Of course. But that’s a different question.

I’m not sure I agree with that. Sure now that Alvarez is demoted, any production would be better. People need to keep in mind, as it was explained in other threads this week from other community members, Alvarez has struggled initially with every promotion before adjusting and then knocking the piss out of the ball.
Maybe he wouldn’t have adjusted this season but I think it was a poor move from management to demote him when he has been commended for his way of handling adversity and making adjustments on the field.
+1

Is this a playoff team?
NO. they could probably compete in the AL Westl They would have one of the best benches around though.
well, this team
is probably better than more than a handful right now….and not play-off bound for sure, but you never know.
I too, would take John Ely over Arreita.
"Fantasy, reality, science Fiction. Which is which? Who can tell?"
No. That is a 70-win team.
It’s a great rookie class though.

How about Sanchez playing third?
he’s been batting better than almost everyone on the list not called Santana and I believe (not sure) that he’s defense at third is not horrible. (I know he hasn’t played much third for the Marlins)
Tabata over Boesch, perhaps?
That might be due to my Pittsburgh homer-ism, though.
To answer the question in the OP, I don’t see that being a 2010 playoff team – the lineup really isn’t that good. Next year, however, that’d be a team to kill for.
Hey, an out is an out - unless you're Mario, in which case it's probably two outs. -UtesFan89
Hard work always beats talent if talent doesn't work hard.
I thought Pedro Alvarez was demoted?
He is in the lineup this afternoon. Last game to impress perhaps?

No worries bud, my hate mail is going to Ed Price.
Also, Pedro just struck out. Damn it.

The Boesch Bomber
If this year is weighted, and you want to try to win as much as possible this year, than this man needs to be in your lineup.
.333/.382/.609/.991
159 OPS+
12 HRs, 45 RBIs in 207 ABs
An astonishing .438 AVG vs lefties in 48 ABs.
I realize some of these guys have been bigger specs for much longer, but you can’t deny the production of Boesch at this point.
He’s well on his way to AL ROY, and soon will be on most of the leader boards when he gets enough ABs to qualify.
2010 Tigers contracts coming off the books:
Maggs (15M vesting option)
Willis (12M)
Bonderman (12.5M)
Robertson (9.5M still being paid this year)
Inge (6.6M)
Damon (8M)
Everett (1.5M)
Laird (3.9M)
2011 is the year of the Tiger!
