I really hope Brackman does well at Trenton.
The Yankees system has so many bright spots right now and they seem like a top 10 system for sure ATM.

Question
Why are there ever 6 recs on a daily thread? You only need 3 to hit the recommended area. Is 6 doing anything other than guaranteeing clutter?
Recs=clutter?

It just knocks really interesting things like Kupe’s reports and some of the better top 50’s that I could imagine would be better than a 3 day old daily thread! :)
Out of curiosity
How does more than the necessary 3 rec’s to put the daily thread on the rec’d list=more readers per story? Are there people here who won’t read the daily thread if only 3 people rec it?

I almost said the same thing, but thought I had said enough as it was.

New minorleague site coming soon, with contributions from those who were not seen fit for this site
To a degree
A daily thread from 4 days ago doesn’t have much business on the rec. section, at least in my opinion. But, even if it did, I still can’t fathom the logic behind the person who decides to be the 6th recommender. What does that serve? It isn’t a gripe, just a curiosity!
Fair point.
For the record I don’t believe I’ve ever rec’d one since the draft, nor have I rec’d one after it’s been bumped. It’s not that hard to find em without out the mods.
"I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day."

Speaking of clutter
Maybe we should start a “Madison Bumgarner gameday thread”, every time he pitches. Keep the dead horse beating off of this thread.
"I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day."
-Frank Sinatra
But...
We have to decide whether or not Bumgarner is the best prospect in baseball, or a fringe top 200 arm! I mean, God knows there are no other possibilities.
Yeah
Left-handed specialist or best pitcher in baseball, seem like the only possible outcomes for his career.

I don't think these should be recommended anymore
I agree with a previous poster that these minor league gameday posts no longer should be recommended. From what I understand, the recommend option should be reserved for outstanding content, and while these are great, I don’t think they really qualify.
These were originally recommended to bump them up on the page because of all of the manager on duty posts, but that is no longer a problem. I think that things should return to the way were, reserving the recommend option for special content. Otherwise, it just becomes a tool to bump stuff up, which is not the appropriate use.
I agree in spirit,
but not in fact. We should rec these. For one day only. And there should never be any more than 3 recs – 4 is foolish. Anybody who rec’s a daily thread should immediately un-rec the following day. This way we get it to the front, where it needs to be, but it doesn’t become an issue.
I will be honest. The daily pages make this site unbeatable for me. It has the great content by Sickels, the enlightening commentary and posts by users, and then an unmatched (to my knowledge) daily thread that allows people to keep up with all of the top minor leaguers (and some gems).
By no means should these not be rec’ed, but we just have to stop being so foolish about how we do it.
What do you all think of him
as a prospect?
too early to tell
More than anything else I’ll be curious to read scouting reports to see whether he looks likely to stay behind the plate. It’s certainly encouraging that he’s showing some in-game power already.
Well, he obviously has some impressive tools
The power is obviously there, but whether he’s actually a catcher or not would seem to be a significant question mark.

Brackman is done
5 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 8 H (1 HR), 1 BB, 5 K, 8/2 GB/FB outs ratio. Mike Ashmore provided some updates on his twitter page:
Saw 90-94 on the FB, 85 on the slider, 76-77 on the curve. His curveball is pretty nasty…slider’s all right. Fastball is heavy, but not a ton of life on it…again, velo was 94-95 on FB. Brackman has been as high as 96 MPH, now…sitting low 90’s, though. Like the curveball a lot…command’s been better than I expected.
that's a pretty confusing report
So is he 90-94, 94-95, sitting low 90s and touching 96 . . .? Could be a little more clear.
In any case, that’s a respectable AA debut.

I think he'll be fine
Just the latest reminder that AAA is hard and is the best training any player can get for the major leagues.
frankly
Everybody that’s good going straight from AA to the majors could be EVEN BETTER with AAA time. And a lot of guys who really struggle wouldn’t struggle nearly as much if they got even a couple of months there. I know it’s tempting when you have really talented kids in AA, but lots of the arms that you’ll find in AAA have a big league approach even if they don’t quite have the stuff. I still have a lot of confidence in Stanton and am not too worried about his long-term prognosis, but they’re certainly making it hard on him.
i agree
thats why i loved what the indians did with santana, and what the phills will most likely do with dom brown
brown
This is just my personal belief and I haven’t subjected it to serious inquiry, but AAA is usually the level where the really elite tools guys really get tested and are forced to develop their skills. It seems to be the “get off here” point for those truly rare athletes who can coast on their athleticism through the lower minors. So yeah, I’m glad to see that Brown is in AAA, and hopefully the Phillies will have the good sense to keep him there through June of next year, giving him a full season’s worth of AAA at bats and saving themselves more than a few bucks in the process.
That's the difference
Between a team desperate for production and a team that can afford to wait and develop properly.
Not really
Teams spend a lot of time short changing themselves to avoid Super 2 status. They could certainly afford to short change themselves a little bit now to get better production for the next 6 years.

I think he'd be okay
Castro likes to keep the ball low in the zone, so he should manage okay unless he starts making some mistakes with other parts of his game.
Maybe he makes a big jump next spring, but right now I’d project him to need a good dose of AAA time. He needs some time to work on putting the whole package together. Castro has good stuff, but it’s not a truly elite package.
Good to see the strikeouts are still up

I liked Valle coming into the year too
And I still think his bat can be quite good. His defense though, that’s what moves him to the bottom for me. I haven’t quite figured out what any of these guys are just yet. The only thing I can really say is that Carlos Perez has the best arm of the bunch and Stassi is probably the best defensively.
I think you've noted before that Bailey was more highly regarded than Stassi going into last year.
Stassi hasn’t really raised his stock for me (though I did like him alot). .247/.319/.436 on the year with a frightening 76 K/20 BB ratio in 59 games.
All those guys are pretty close for me. Probably fall in the 80-130 range with some upside.

Yeah
But the arm is a question mark right now, and he’s lost a year of development time. I like Bailey quite a bit, but I’m going to need some positive scouting reports on him to move him back ahead of Stassi.
The Ks are a big concern, but he’s been praised defensively and is showing good power for a teenager in the Midwest League.

would be hard for Britton not to be atop that list
Britton, Cosart, Withrow, Crosby in that order.
I don't know
I think I’d rather have Cosart. If Crosby’s healthy, he’s at the top, but as it is:
Cosart
Britton
Crosby
Withrow
maybe
Crosby is pretty much never healthy, though.
Have to take Britton over Cosart, comparable upsides and Britton is two levels higher.
Perhaps, but I think Cosart has a bit more K potential than Britton
All of these guys are fairly close for me.
control
Britton’s walked 28 guys in 87 innings, in AA no less. That’s just fine and he’s made good strides there in the last year.
Cosart has walked 15 in 70 innings
At the same age/level Britton walked 49 in 147 innings. Cosart has shown advanced command compared to Britton at the same stage of development. It doesn’t mean he’ll make the same strides as Britton did, but I really do like the combo of stuff and control Cosart has at this point. I think his ceiling exceeds that of Britton, though Britton is closer to the majors and has the higher floor.
http://bullpenbanter.com
yeah, Cosart has the higher ceiling
But it’s not like we’re comparing frontline starter potential to end of the rotation starter potential here. Considering that one guy has a higher floor AND is pitching with success two levels higher, right now I couldn’t not go with Britton.
Agreed, Cosart's advantage in potential is outweighed by Britton's likeliness to reach his potential as well as the fact that he's closer to reaching his respective ceiling
Cosart could end up being one of the best pitchers in the league. With Britton’s ability to induce groundballs and his command, if he can miss some bats then he’ll likely end up being a pretty damn good starter.
I’m very bullish on Britton at the very least becoming a solid No. 4, with a good defense behind him he could be a really effective guy.

Like, if you wanted to assign probabilities, I’d probably give Cosart an edge in being a No. 1 starter . . .but for every other slot in a rotation, I think Britton has a better chance.
Britton’s really had a fine year and he’s certainly on the rise. Now that he’s cut the walks, it’s really not that easy to do much against him.

Not minor leagues
Chris Johnson: 4/5, two doubles, no strikeouts with the Astros big league club.
I’m really impressed with what I’m seeing from him. He appears to have made some significant adjustments since the beginning of the year. His plate approach is much better; he’s not swinging at pitches outside the zone. Furthermore, his swing used to be pretty long and he’d tried to pull everything. Now, it’s much quicker and simpler, and he’s willing to go with the ball.
All this is supported by his reduced strikeout this season at AAA: He struck out in just 14.1% of his plate appearances, as compared to 21.8% in 2009.
Don’t be too surprised if he turns out to stick as an everyday starter, maybe even an above average major leaguer.

hmm
Corner OF who hammers AA at age 22 . . .if the scouting reports come back solid, then he’s probably a grade B prospect for me, which means he’d be in contention for slots 85-100, typically.
If things don’t go like that for him, I’d have to think about it.
