he has dominated beloit and fort myers this year
might be time to test him soon in AA.
He’s a top 10 twins prospect I would think as of now.

just heard there is absolutely no plans to take him off catcher. said he started catching his senior year playing two times a week and is now playing it every day, and they knew there would be some bad games. Myers wants to catch too, for what that’s worth. said his bat could probably play anywhere but behind the plate he could be a superstar.

Quick rundown if you don’t wanna waste 30 minutes of the life:
considering a promotion for Hosmer - Moose working the count better, gets into better hitting counts to help utilize power — Montgomery out for 2-3 weeks, being careful but he’s checked out besides the soreness — Crow’s stuff awesome, command sucks — Lamb does everything well, won’t consider AA until August at earliest — Would have taken Chris Dwyer at #4 in this past draft — Melville needs more consistency, everything falls into place when pace of delivery is good — Duffy’s ETA to AA is mid-July, will pitch in some rookie ball games first.

good stuff to hear
I believe NW Arkansas is visiting San Antonio in the first couple weeks of July, would love it if Hosmer is on the roster at that point.
Thanks

Catcher
Again, there is no reason for a team like the Royals to move him off catcher. While his defense is currently raw (whose wouldn’t be after just taking over a new position) there isn’t any reason why he can’t be a plus catcher similar to Buster Posey who has a similar athletic profile and wasn’t always committed to being behind the dish because he played a ton of positions. Great news for Royals fans.

Can I ask a slightly stupid question?
When we’re talking about catcher’s defense, I’m assuming we’re really talking about framing pitches, calling games, and blocking passed balls, correct? All this talk about catchers who are butchers behind the dish somewhat confuses me. If anyone wants to clarify this for me, I’ll give you a bent Edgardo Alfonzo card circa 1998

Defense
Those are all really important elements (though I would argue calling games is probably overrated unless its for a rookie.)
I don’t think your question is for me (because I’m not talking about butchers). However, there is also a great deal made about funneling the ball and pop times on throwing runners out. With his arm I’m convinced he can be an above average defender.

Who has a better rest of 2010 season offensively?
Carlos Santana or Buster Posey?
I would vote Carlos Santana
Heyward’s HR/FB rate was really high early in the season and he’s not as hot. He’s also only 20 compared to Sanatana’s 24, and Santana’s extra experience in the high minors will let him adjust quicker. At least, that’s hot I see it.
Wouldn’t be surprised if I was wrong, though.
Depends what your lookings for
They each have a very different hitting profile. I’ll still take Santana’s combination of power and plate discipline, but Posey is fantastic line drive hitter. Additionally, if this is a fantasy question (which it seems like) I’d give extra consideration to Posey because he playing first and will get more AB then Santana (unless of of course Santana will be DH’d on his non-catcher days)

Two Cubs pitchers of note pitching tonight
Chris Archer is scheduled to start for Daytona against Lakeland. Since May 1st, he’s been averaging around 11.3 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9. In June, those numbers have been a ridiculous 13.22 K/9 and 1.65 BB/9.
Austin Kirk is also starting for Boise.
Didn't want to create a fanpost on this
But Matt Davidson is someone who has completely shot up my personal list this year.
What is the consensus on him? What kind of player can he ultimately be?
Matty D
As Fredrick has called him,
Is huge kid with a wide base and even wider shoulders.6-3 225 with room to grow.
Maintains a solid 2 handed grip through his swing, using a lot of his lower body with a smooth head and hip rotation. Gets his hands inside on the ball . Is a strait away hitter routinely drives the ball well to CF/RCF.
He has a very solid build that hampers his lateral movement, this along with questionable arm strength and accuracy could make him destined for 1st base.

Nobody ever gets banned for having an opinion.
They do get banned for violating the clearly-stated rules. Especially when they’ve had more than one warning. And especially when they try to violate the rules specifically when they think I’m not looking.

John, why don’t you go ahead and just delete me from this site? I’m pretty certain I’m not one to be told shut up for voicing my opinion. Clearly, in your view, the “detracting” posts I write with only humor and levity intended far outweigh my analytical posts, comments, and contributions to this site. I’m not the kind of person who is going to say, “oh, I’m the reason people come to this site.” But I’m a damn good contributor, and I’d like to think a valued member of this community. However, clearly, this is not the case in your eyes. While I do enjoy the content on this website, the politics of being a member of a community where there exists an obvious clash between people who try not to take all of this stuff to seriously and those who find anything other than strict prospect discussion to be detrimental is not for me anymore. It’s the internet John, but then again, it is your site, and far be it for me to tell you how to run it.

Fred is a bright guy with good baseball insights, but he rejected/ignored multiple warnings to follow the forum rules and avoid vulgarity. It ramped up again after I told you guys I was taking a bit of time off. That was clearly deliberate, weiner and choad comments and other violations showing up when people thought I was not looking.
A quality troll mixes good posts with ones designed to disrupt the website. I have been too lenient with trolls in the past, and it hurt the site. My priority is to protect the interests of the site by enforcing the rules, so I did so. The decision was mine and mine alone.

Starts to build?
Kevin Goldstein was championing Ynoa as a once in a generation talent upon signing with the A’s. This was the year that he ranked him as the 15th (I believe) best prospect in baseball, and a year before Ynoa didn’t even show up on his top 100.
I believe the kid will be good, but the hype machine started long ago and has just been lying dormant for the past year or so.
Compare him to the 2010 prep class
As I stated below his peer group was just drafted out of HS. He does not have a “head start” at all on his peer group, which is usually the case for Latin players who are signed at age 16 and usually by the time they are Ynoa’s age the top end of that class is playing in Low A ball.
Velo of 92-94 doesn’t stand out per say within the 2010 prep draft class, although he still has a lot of “projection” left in him.

Well, depends on what “X” is, I suppose. Not sure I agree.
I use this line a lot, but there’s way too much made of what Ynoa hasn’t done/what he isn’t rather than what he is and can do. He’s still remarkably advanced with an extremely projectable frame & the makings of a real plus repertoire.
If we had never had heard of him before he’d be generating a lot of excitement based on reports out of extended spring training and instructionals. I feel Ynoa is now underrated, a victim of his own hype.

He'll be 19 in September
So his “peer group” is now Taillon, Cole, Allie, Whiston, Covey, etc.
is he really “advanced” vis-a-vis this peer group who have spent the last 18 months pitching in HS games, AAU games, AFLAC All-Star games, Team USA 18U teams???
Ynoa and his peer group will all be at similar levels to start the 2011 season.
Ynoa may still be a great pitcher but his development path will trail that of the elite young Latin arms like Felix, Teheran, Martin Perez, etc who were toiling at much higher levels during their age 19 seasons.

It happens a lot with these latin signees. We hear about them when they sign 7 figure deals, but then they lie low in rookie leagues for 2+ years. Yorman Rodriguez is another guy suffering a similar fate.

always good to see the top preps in rookie ball
With the stupid deadline, the top prep players all routinely hold out as long as possible now, which I hate to see. Pro ball is a major adjustment for these guys, and a lot of them end up signing late and getting their first exposure in full season ball, or end up getting their development clocks pushed back by forcing them to start in short season ball the next year. The track record of players who really struggled through rookie ball only to take off the next year is quite good. Nothing quite like getting introduced to the pro lifestyle and wood bats sooner rather than later.
I have a theory that the "signability" trend this year
from many teams had at least a little bit to do with getting guys on the field that much sooner in addition to finances. Get a player whose potential you believe in, sign him quickly and start developing.
