METS MOD #4 (If people don't stop copying the humorous parentheticals, I will shank them)

So, we've got our budget.  $5.2 Mil, as decided by both myself and the community at large.  It seemed to be a good average of the posts I got, so cool.  Now, since we only have two picks to worry about, why don't we look at the top 5 choices for #7 first.  I'll list my guys in no order, then state who, as of now, is my pick at #7.

-Brandon Workman

-Zach Cox

-Yasmani Grandal

-Karsten Whitson

-Alex Wimmers

And my pick is: Brandon Workman.  He's got very good upside, but as a college arm, he fits the Mets' general drafting strategy.  Throw in that his bonus demands don't seem to be too high, and he seems like a darn good pick here.  Not sure why he hasn't been thrown around this spot more, but for me, right now, he's the pick.  The following is the order I'd be inclined to go assuming Workman is not picked, or you guys just hate the choice:

1. Whitson

2. Grandall

3. Cox

4. Wimmers

So, in this MOD, I want you guys to chime in on both your thoughts on my current ranking, as well as your own rankings/thoughts in general about this #7 pick.  I'll post our MOD for the 3rd rounder tomorrow, but let's start with this.  And, as always, our mascot:

I would like Whitson, Brentz, or either Sale if Machado/Taillon is not there. The cheaper college pitchers just don’t do it for me in Round 1

My guess

My guess is the Mets actual board is something like:
Harper, Taillon, Machado, Cox, C Sale, Pomeranz

If those 6 are gone, they might go with Workman or Matt Harvey. I would probably go with Karsten Whitson. Next choices would be Michael Choice or Josh Sale.

I'd really be surprised if the Mets, or anyone, had cox that high

You’re name has 2k9 in it — what are you some 8 year-old who makes Pillsbury Doughboy cookies and jerks off to that bullshit video game with Tim Lincecum on the cover--

Cox rankings:

BA has him ranked at #6 link
[Harper, Taillon, Machado, Pomeranz, C Sale, Cox]
Law has him ranked #6 link
[Harper, Machado, Taillon, Pomeranz, Whitson, Cox]
Nick James has him at #7 link
[Harper, Taillon, Whitson, C Sale, Harvey, Castellanos, Cox]
Perfect Game has him at #8 link
[Harper, Taillon, Pomeranz, Machado, Sale, Grandal, Allie, Cox, McGuire, Covey]

And Jim Callis apparently likes him as the best bat after Harper, even ignoring position: link

Assume that’s J.Sale . . . Cox, J.Sale, Choice, Brentz. @MetsNetsJets: rank Sale, Brentz, Choice and Cox ignoring position? #mlbdraft

Well, maybe that's just my own perception

I really don’t like the kid, not exactly sure why, but he just doesn’t inspire a ton of confidence in me. Also, worth noting that although it may only be a few spot difference, that’s what I mean. I don’t think that most people would put Cox ahead of Pom, but that’s just me

Fair enough...

Yeah, maybe I shouldn’t have him ahead of Pomeranz and C Sale, I think most have those two first. But I’ve seen a ton of mocks connecting the Mets to Cox lately, and I think he’s probably in that top 6. Most would have Whitson ahead of him too, but the Mets apparently don’t.

I’m sort of coming around on him, though for awhile I really liked Colon better, and I also like Choice’s upside. If Chris Sale and Drew Pomeranz are gone though, I’d probably take any one of those bats (along with maybe Grandal or Brentz) over any of the remaining college arms.

My top 6 would be Harper, Taillon, C Sale, Machado, Whitson, Pomeranz

Those seem to be the obvious choices to me.

If those are gone though, then I think things get more debatable.

Agreed on the Top 6

Although I might have Josh Sale or Bryce Brentz at #6 if only because I am concerned that Pomeranz may end up as a reliever. Brentz I think will be fine if he gets back to the stroke he showed as a Sophomore. The power numbers I think caused him to press a bit much this year. Give him some pro coaching and I feel he will do just fine
