On My Way To See Strasburg
Love having him in the home town.
My Guys: Gillies, Pacheco, Drabek, Verlander, Ozuna, A Salcedo, S Rodriguez, and others.
nice
Be sure to write up a report . . .I love hearing first-hand accounts. You catch so many little things watching in person that even the best video doesn’t quite catch.
I’ll be heading over to the ballpark here in San Antonio shortly, Cory Luebke for SA and Travis Banwart for Midland. I’ve been taking lots of notes and should have some good things to share on some Padres and A’s prospects.
Capra
I’ll post my notes on him later.
I made a mistake yesterday, one regular was missing, Matt Sulentic of Midland. Sulentic in the lineup tonight at 2B, Adrian Cardenas (who played 3B yesterday) is not in the lineup tonight.

My bad
He is actually in RF. Assuming that’s a developmental move as he doesn’t look like he has the arm to profile there.

Apparently fdls has been promoted
Just saw him pitch

How'd he look?
All FB’s?

no
Absolute death to RH batters. Fastball 94-96 MPH. Mixed in some sliders, 83-87 MPH, wipe out pitch. Couple of LH batters got good swings on him. Needs to bring up his control against LH batters, but generally speaking he looks great.
adding to this
I saw him warming up in the pen and was initially confused unsure of who he was, because he wasn’t listed on the most recent roster in the program. I could see he was throwing smoke, just had to wait to get a better look at him.
Not especially tall, but strong build. Pronounced leg kick in his delivery. He wasn’t just throwing mid-90s, he was throwing it pretty dang easy. Can’t wait to see where he’s going to be at two months from now.
Thanks Kupe, good to hear.
I actually emailed Callis about him yesterday morning, after I saw he got promoted. Here.
Hi Jim,
I was just wondering what you’ve heard of the A’s plans with FDLS, he’s obviously done quite well in a relief role since coming back, but do they still consider his future in the rotation? Also, I’m well aware of his FB, but how are his secondary offerings at this point?
-——————————————————————————————————————————-
I think they’re just trying to work him back slowly. Still has upside as a potential starter. Have not heard any recent reports on the slider, and he never had much of a changeup.

Chris Dwyer
this guy has me super excited.
Last Sunday he went 3 ip, 6 h, 0 r, 0 bb, 2 k before the game was suspended.
That game was finished today on perfect scheduling so Dwyer could retake the mound, and his final line was 9 ip, 10 h, 1 r, 0 bb, 13 k
47/5 K/BB in his last 40 innings.

MM
Royals prospect left-hander Mike Montgomery has been placed back on the minor league disabled list following a recurrence of elbow soreness.
Hardly a good sign, as the soreness originally surfaced in late May. The 20-year-old southpaw is 5-1 with a 2.01 ERA over 10 starts between High-A Wilmington and Double-A Northwest Arkansas this season. A supplemental first round pick of the Royals in 2008, Montgomery was ranked as the organization’s No. 1 prospect by Baseball America over the winter.

yeah
kinda wonder about what teams/orgs like the A’s [with B.Anderson] and now KC are thinking…It might be just prudent to have the zipper now instead of jerking around. TJ has come so far.
rehab
Success rate might be improving all the time, but it’s still months of recuperation followed by an extended rehabilitation program, and even then it takes a while to get totally back to pre-injury levels. That’s not something you’d want to put any player through without a lot of consideration given to other options.
sure
I agree with rest/rehab when applicable, and I guess that is sorta the grey area—but it seems so often that they try it a couple times [ala Brett A] and inevitably he will end up with the zipper.
TJ
Should be an absolute last resort imo. It’s true that the surgery has come a hell of a long way, and will like likely continue to improve with future medical advances, but it’s still not fool proof.

he got under it and “just missed it”. nope. that’s the thing about 80 power. doesn’t just mean 500 foot homeruns; it also means mis-hitting 360 foot homeruns.

is there a reason why he skipped A+?

kinslerhomer + tball are the ones who should probably answer this
but if I had to guess, it’s because the Rangers don’t like sending a lot of their pitching prospects to the CAL
Adoptive parent of Kyle Nicholson
Not sure why
though they did the same with Feliz and have been very aggressive with their most talented guys. Right now he’s going through a couple mechanical changes, according to some reports. He went on the DL briefly with a fingernail issue, but I suspect it was mechanical tweaking. My guess is that he’s not completely comfortable yet and it showed.
He’ll be fine in the long run, the potential hasn’t changed. Reports from those I trust are saying the stuff is still there, just execution problems and inconsistency.

That’s how you start your pro career with a bang… Homerun in his first professional at bat. He was 2/4 and hit a double as well.
any idea what position they have in mind for him?
played RF tonight. was announced as 3B. scouts liked him at C.
baseball rules.
They said 3B
Scouting director Bobby Heck explained that they feel it is his highest ceiling position… not sure why they would think that.
I’d speculate that they want to coach him up a little before they put him at third base full time.
you're somewhere in Texas, right?
You going to Midland for the Texas League All Star game?
bummer
I haven’t decided yet but I doubt I’ll make the 4.5 hour trip, either. It’s hard to get a good feel for things in these sorts of showcase-like events, but it’s fun to get to see all of those guys. Would love to see how Clemens would stack up in the HR derby.
Love this guy.
Good to see him and Perez get of to a good start. My too favourite prospects in Auburn.

Here's what Frankie P. said about Pierre
From an article earlier this year:
Gustavo Pierre, SS, Toronto Blue Jays: If you like raw tools, keep a close eye on Pierre. Even at the Gulf Coast League level, he’s an exciting player to watch. Pierre has an extra-athletic, strong frame. He looks similar to Hanley Ramirez, and his long-term tools may not be all that different from the Marlins’ superstar either.
Pierre may prove to be a bit too sloppy with the glove to stick at shortstop, but, at 18, he still has plenty of time to prove he can play the position. His above-average speed, throwing arm and plate prowess are what make him especially interesting. The right-handed-hitting Pierre received a $700,000 bonus from Toronto in 2008, and so far he’s looked to be worth every penny. He’s inconsistent and very impatient at the plate at this stage, but his hand-eye coordination may make him especially unique. Pierre has the ability to drive pitches well out of the zone into the gaps.
If he can learn even the slightest bit of plate discipline and pick pitches to drive, he’s going to be one dangerous hitter.

Scheppers...
Bit of a rough outing, didn’t make it the full 4 innings, but threw 73 pitches, not good to throw that many in less than 4 innings in general, but it’s another sign of them continuing to stretch him out. I’m curious to read stories about his stuff this time.
He threw 3.2 innings with 5 hits, 3 runs, 3 walks and 4 ks.

not minor leagues
But another baseball message board denizen pointed out tonight that Brandon Wood’s 2010 MLB OPS+ is now 1. As in 001.
Could use a change of scenery
Might be able to reach the double digits somewhere else.
Robinson Lopez
6.2 Innings, 2 hits, no runs, 4 punch-outs. I know he doesn’t get the ink that some of the other Braves’ minor league hurlers get, but it seems as though he’s on the rise, as well.
Agreed
He’s got the most projection left out of the Delgago, Teheran, and Vizcaino and already throws pretty hard. He also has a good feel for such a young age. It’ll take him a while, but I really like him.

Chris Nelson Called Up
Tulowitzki has a broken wrist. Barmes will probably take over at SS for most of the time, but Nelson figures to get some time there and at 2B.
Do you guys think he could impress enough to earn a bigger role? He finally reached AAA this year, and he’s posted the lowest K rate of his minor league career there this season so there has to be some hope he’s putting it together, right?
Domingo Santana
Pissed that he’s back in short-season goes 303 with 2 HR and a 2b.
The Dodgers won't win a playoff series until the Cool-a-Coo returns.

He does have issues
With defense, the K/BB, right he’s on fire with the bat
He played only 5 games in 2009 due to signing late. of course it is the cal league, but he has been showing improvement since may.
I'm still waiting to read a scouting report on his defense
He’s committed a lot of errors, but we all know that those don’t tell us much about defense (especially at the minor league level).
It seems they were pretty much all throwing errors
And he has been DHing a lot recently because of a sore arm.
Random update from SA
Turns out that my dad is occupied with things tomorrow . . .so we’re doing Father’s Day next week.
As a result, the player reports I’m writing up will include Simon Castro, tomorrow’s starter for SA.
