MiLB 6/15
Some starters
AAA: Samardzija, Lofgren, Bumgarner vs. Carillo, McCutchen, Savery, Bowden
AA: Guerra, Alderson, Montgomery, Castro vs. Lyles (nice)
A: Richmond (rehab) vs. Betances, May, Matzek, Bushue
It's a pretty light line-up, though there are a lot of TBDs yet. Castro vs. Lyles is easily the highlight of the day. Rob Bryson should also get a couple innings for Kinston tonight. I'm going to homer him up for the remainder of the season, just to warn you.
His line to date, in his first full season off of shoulder surgery:
30.1 innings, 18 hits, 5 runs, 5 ER, 4 HR, 10 BB, 53 K
That's nasty

Is it just me...
or does it seem like Bumgarner pitches every three days or so? I suppose it could be that every time he does pitch, there’s 150 comments debating his velo, ceiling, and breaking stuff, that it takes two days to read em all.

Umm...
Not just every time he pitches, we have a debate every time his name is mentioned in a thread anywhere. I have never seen SO many people so adamant about what they think a prospect’s future is.
"God, I'm from Cleveland. When is it going to be our time?"
Haha, yeah, good point.

Dellin Betances is throwing today
Pitched well five days ago in his first start in a year.
very good tonight
6ip 2h 1bb 7k
in two starts:
12ip 5h 1r 1bb 13k
so the results are threre…anyone got an updated scouting report on him since all the injuries? is he still throwing with uber high velocity?
Yup
SJK: Dellin Betances, he’s returning from injury. Do you still have hopes for him?
MN: Yeah, big-time stuff. I saw him at a rehab game the other day, he was at 95 mph, topped at 97.

Sam Demel to Dbacks for Conor Jackson
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2010/06/as-acquire-conor-jackson.html
Thoughts on Demel?
He has to become immediately relevant in that DBacks bullpen, right? How long until he’s setting up and then closing, the way their bullpen is going?
Same thought here
I assume he will be given a chance to prove himself in the 7th inning for awhile. Heilman is next in line, though, it appears. And, we know what he has done with that role before.
Play ball!
I'm surprised Dbacks liked Demel
Henry Rodriguez, Tyson Ross are younger and throw with higher velocity
Sure
but I can easily see the A’s not wanting to give up a talent like Tyson Ross for a 28 year old guy who hasnt hit much in a while – or Henry Rodriguez
I think he could turn it around and become useful with a change of scenery bu I ca see the A’s not wanting to give up one of thier very best arms to take a flyer on him. Id bet the D’Backs sure asked about Ross or Rodriguez though.
Eric Arnett demoted to AZL.
As a Brewer fan, I must say, it’s pretty sweet to have your 1st round draft pick, who’s a college pitcher, get demoted to rookie ball.

Lyles/Castro or Felipe Paulino?
Maybe I will watch some of Lyles and some of Paulino…
Then again, it really really sucks squinting at the tiny MiLB.TV screen. But I really want to see if Lyles has made any progress on his breaking ball…
One of the hottest pitchers in the minors is pitching tonight
Chris Archer. He’s been red hot after a slow start to the year. So far so good against Lakeland (3 ip, 3 h, 7 K’s).
Oh, Cubs Casey Coleman also had a good start. 7 ip, 2 h, 1 r, 8 K’s, 7:4 GO/FO. Average stuff, gets ground balls, won’t K many, solid control type. Legacy kid, as dad and gramps both played in the majors. only 2nd full season of pro ball.
Cubs
Archer: 5.1 ip, 8 h, 0 bb, 4 runs, 1 unearned, 10 K’s, 1 HR (solo), 3:2 GO/FO. The BABIP was high.
Since the end of April, he’s had 9 starts, going 5-0, throwing 46.1 innings, giving up 25 h, 14 bb, that led to 13 runs (3 unearned), while striking out 58.
Brett Jackson: 2/5, 1 RBI, 3 K’s, 1 SB. Season: .293/.404/.449. Last 10: .378/.440/.667.
Ryan Flaherty: 0/4, 1 K.
DJ LeMahieu: 1/4, SB.
Hak-ju Lee, 1/4. Season: .276/.342/.349.
Logan Watkins: 0/4, 1 K. Played CF.
Matt Cerda: 1/4, 1 2B, 1 K. Played 2nd. A bit more intrigued with this Cubs alignment, with Watkins in CF and Cerda at 2nd. Season: .277/.379/.391, 34 BB/35 K.
Casey Coleman was noted above. Retired 21 consecutive to finish off the CG, 7 ip.
Darwin Barney: 4/5, 2R, 1 2B, 1 BB (played both games).
Welington Castillo: 0/3, K.
Jeff Samardzija: 5 ip, 3 h, 2 bb, 6 K’s, and a E.
Montgomery!
had me worried after he came out after 56 pitches, but apparently he was on a limited pitch count.
3.2 ip, 2 h, 1 r, 1 bb, 3 k
baseball rules.
Flea Market, Montgomery...
…It’s just like a mini-mall….but seriously, goot to see him back!

That's better control than 2009 Moore even
but lets see if he can keep it up or if it was an “on” night or an ump with a big zone or something. As of now Wilking Rodriguez, Colome and Torres have all moved ahead of him for me. I was always skeptical of Moore to be fair.
Bullpen Banter

twitter: @alskor
Torres? really?
I guess I can see someone preferring Colome, and Wilking has come along nicely… but this is still Matt Moore… he’s still young, he’s still electric. he still walks too many. not a big deal.
and jar, he was bad with BB% the first half of 2009 as well.
Torres
62 IP, 70 K, 54 H, 27 BB, 3 HR this year. Scouts had very positive reviews of his stuff in the spring and early in the year. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=10787
Shouldn’t be taken as too much of a knock on Moore. I was never that big a Moore fan, admittedly… but lets just say he wouldn’t be dropping that many spots in most other systems. I really think the hype on Moore got out of control last year. Big curve he can’t throw for strikes and he also can’t throw his fastball for strikes that often. Change is still pretty weak. People just fell in love with the K’s and overlooked the flaws in his game.
Right now I’m much more confident in Torres being a useful starter than I am Moore. The chances of Moore ending up in the pen (always a big concern for me – poor control, lack of third pitch, questionable conditioning) have increased since last year. Stuff wise I feel Wilking and Colome have a pretty big edge on Moore.

I love Torres
I think he should get a promotion to Durham soon and will be the next in line after Davis/Hellickson in the 1/2 season- full season Durham schedule they were on.
Wasn't that mostly just in April 2009?
He was pretty lights out after that point last year. I see why alskor is concerned though as the walks are a huge problem. His prospect status hasn’t changed much for me and I’m more disappointed that he hasn’t taken a step forward.
Hard for me to see how he hasn't taken a step back...
The walks were bad through half of last season, not just April. Where he was ranked this offseason was in large part based on the improvements he showed in the 2nd half. This season he has continued to walk guys like crazy, show little command of any of his pitches, show little to no improvement in his changeup/third pitch, his K’s have gone down slightly and he’s become much more hittable.
Its not as bad as if you simply looked at his ERA, I’ll give you that… but he’s not showing any progress at all – especially in the all important area of walks and control/command. Give me the same numbers in 2010 and have his walks drop to 4/9 and I’d be all over him.
As it stands he looks to me to have the profile of someone who will get hammered at AA.
Bullpen Banter

Some points
-His BABIP this year is .391. The hits really don’t concern me much at this point.
-I could be remembering poorly, but I thought he had some truly awful outings where he was walking everyone in April 2009.
-He has still limited the HRs and has a solid GO/FO ratio.
-The K rate has ticked down slightly, but it’s still well above 9.
He looks like the same pitcher that he was in 2009 to me.
He looks like the same pitcher he was in 2009 to me, too.
That’s why I thought he was so overrated in 2009.
IMO he looked like two different pitchers in 2009
First half Moore and second half Moore. People (including myself) ranked him heavily on the basis of the second half Moore.
2010 Moore looks like Moore’s 2009 full season numbers as you say… to me, that’s going backwards.

I wonder
if it just takes a bit to adjust to a new level. His last five starts he’s gone 29.1 IP with 37/13 K/BB, putting his BB/9 under 4 in that time span. He’s moved down my list slightly, as a result of him not showing as much progress as I hoped for and as well as others surpassing my expectations.

I was watching the start. It was funny because like 5 out of the first 6 strikeouts were looking. On like, absolutely PERFECT pitches on both corners, including with the curve, which was looking a lot better than last time I saw it.

I believe the other six were swinging, FYI.

Is it a good thing to rack up "looking" strikeouts against AA hitters?
I’ll take swinging ones, thanks. Pitchability tends not to transfer to the majors like stuff does, which is why many think Lyles is overrated.
Indeed
And I find it interesting that raising doubts about Lyles as a top 50 prospect automatically means that we think he has a low ceiling.
Six strikeouts swinging as well, remember
Six in seven innings is still above average even if you want to throw out all the ones looking as worthless.
And I believe he will be the kind of pitcher who will strike out a lot of batters looking at every level, because he’s one of those guys who has that ability to make “the perfect pitch” on the corner in a way that freezes the batter. For instance, the hitter is looking fastball in, so he loops in a curveball on the outside corner. Bang.
By the way
I think “stuff” pitchers tend struggle to translate just as much as “pitchability” guys. They are just given more of a chance the adjust, which all minor league players need.
Obviously, a guy with both stuff and pitchability is ideal and will come up and dominate pretty quickly (e.g. Lincecum).
What makes Lyles such a good prospect is that he has a chance to be that kind of pitcher due to projection in his frame and secondary stuff. But even if he doesn’t project the way people hope, I think he could already be a No. 3-4 type starter right now, so he has a good floor as well.
Simon
but..simon settled down after giving up 4 runs in the first…he was lights out the next 4 innings…says a lot about his poise.

I could see a mid rotation type pretty easily.
…but the secondary stuff needs some major improvement for that AND the reports of improved velocity have to stick. 91ish would be great news. That’s plus for a LHP and he can be very effective there. With his closed delivery and fastball control he could probably trick major leaguers… for a while.
There is really very little about Bumgarner that looks like an elite prospect other than ERA. On the season: 69 IP, 75 H, 20 BB, 47 K, 5 HR. That’s a 9.8 H/9 and 6.1 K/9. Meh.

Context
The stats – at first glance – don´t look great.
However, once you consider that he has done it at age 20 in the AAA Pacific Coast League playing 24 to 34-year-olds, it´s pretty good, I´d say.
If Bumgarner´s fastball really is sitting in the low 90s again with extraordinary command of it and he can complement it with an average cutter and average slider, I see no reason why he can´t be at least a good # 3 starter in the majors or possiby better.
Well, ARL for pitchers doesn’t mean a whole lot. Its certainly on the plus side of the ledger for him – but not a big boost for me.
A mid rotation type is a pretty good pitcher. If he’s sitting low 90’s with plus command but weak secondary offerings that makes it sound like he ends up in the pen. As of now his slider is a long ways from average. Its great that he added the cutter but he’s going to have a lot of trouble the second and third time through the batting order with a repertoire like that.
Bumgarner has a lot of work to do to even project as a #3 starter. I would be flat out shocked if he was able to improve his secondary offerings enough to be a front line starter. The odds are extraordinarily long at this point.

"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
A) I never said anything of the sort. In fact I explicitly left the possibility open.
B) My criticisms of Bumgarner aren’t particularly related to his velocity.
C) I’m not going through this again. If you want to assume his velocity WILL reach mid 90’s then by all means do so. I’m still skeptical he ever threw that hard and I certainly wouldn’t assume he ever will again even if he did.

Now I see where you’re coming from. You believe there was a grand conspiracy between dozens of scouts and scores of radar guns that clocked him to be throwing consistently in the mid-90s from 2008 to the middle of 2009. Let me guess, you probably also believe that 9/11 was an inside job by the evil Bush or da Jooz, and metal can’t be melted by fire?
