2010 Lake County Captains Prospects
This year the Captains are sending 5 players to the MWL All-Star game, and I was wondering what players from this group you could see success going forward. Some backround on the players I am really interested in hearing your opinion of:
Chun-Hsiu Chen, C - 21 year old, hitting .341 with a .401 OBP, .962 SLG and a .962 OPS.
Roberto Perez, C - Another 21 year old catcher. Only hitting .219, but with a .374 OBP. .320 SLG and .694 OPS. That all said, his real calling card is defense, as he has caught 51% of would be base stealers.
Bo Greenwell, LF - 21 year old. Having a great year: .313 avg, .397 OBP, .436 OBP with .833 OPS.
Note: this is not a fantasy question, I am just trying to get educated on the Indians low minors. Thanks!

Greenwell is the son of former Red Sox 1B, Mike Greenwell. His season is basically being padded by a ridiculous April. The buzz (at least as far as I can determine) is that he was expected to hit well this year.
But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright Brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown.

I was wrong about the elder Greenwell’s position. Turns out he played OF. I guess in my head he was always a first baseman.

Nice to know
I work about 15 minutes away from LC stadium but go to Akron Aeros games in the summer. Want to get up to a Captains game this year though.
i'm not sure what to think about chen's performance this year
i know there was always some expectation that he had pop, and would likely hit in the minors, particularly low minors, but after last year, I don’t think anyone expected this. I’ve read somewhere that his defense has improved a fair amount, but he still has work to do.
Hello toonsterwu and everyone,
Yes, Chen has really burst onto the scene this year offensively, though most thought he would be a quality hitter, but after a disappointing season with Mahoning Valley last year (NY-Penn League), the temptations with Chen may have been tempered just a bit, but this is a nice bounceback season for him, and has ignited talk that the Indians are starting to show some quality catching depth at the lower levels of the system, in addition to Santana and Marson at the upper-levels/MLs.
As you mentioned, Chen’s defense is behind his offense, though he is continuing to improve. He still needs more work, though with the way he is hitting, I think we could see him in Kinston (Carolina League) before the end of this season.
As was also mentioned by OscarDog, his battery mate partner, Perez, excells defensively, but his offense is behind, though most think his bat is better than what he has shown (but not projected to be at the level of Chen either). Some have said that Perez’s defense and game-calling is good enough right now to be catching at the ML level. Reports seem to suggest that the Indians see him being no worst than a ML back-up some day. How far his bat progresses and what opportunities are present (i.e which team he is on and who is ahead of him, etc.) will determine whether he could possibly a ML starter some day or a quality back-up.
Another player who I think will see Kinston later this season is Bo Greenwell; while he has cooled off some in May and early June, he’s still having quality at-bats and quality peripherals to go with that .300 or so BA. I remember his father Mike Greenwell with the Red Sox, and I think they could be similar in terms of offensive ability – solid BA (.280-.300 or so), decent power, but probably not a pure HR hitter (15-25 HRs or so), and be capable of driving in 80-100 RBIs/season. Of course, time will only tell if those projections change, but so far, Greenwell is doing well after being drafted out of HS and has time to continue developing. As mentioned, I think he’ll be in Kinston before the season is over.
Take care and have a great day!
