Detailed scouting report on Robbie Erlin

Jason Parks on Erlin, part of a series. Parks has Erlin as having the 15th highest ceiling in the system, a potential solid #3 starter.

His FB has some natural sink to it and his command/control projections are above-average. His CB is a money pitch with a tight rotation and sharp two-plane break. His CU has solid-average projection giving him a third quality pitch. Tool-based grade: 56; solid-average No. 3 starter at the major league level.

Maybe done...

he’s through six. The team said he’d go about 85 pitches or six innings. He got through 6 in 65 pitches, while still striking out a batter per inning.

Sick. Just sick.

Draft Guys

For those who are interested – Drew Pomeranz is facing my beloved Razorbacks on ESPNU. There should be two top 10 picks in DP for Ole Miss and Zack Cox for my Hogs.

It’s 1-1 in the 4th right now.

by Dfarth on May 7, 2010 9:06 PM EDT reply actions

Radar Gun

I’m guessing the gun is off in this game. Pomeranz is sitting at about 87 with the FB according to the ESPN gun. That said, I have seen Smyly (the Hogs pitcher) a few times this year and he usually sits around 92 — but tonight the stadium gun has him sitting right around 87 as well. I’m guessing it’s 4-5 mph slow…

by Dfarth on May 7, 2010 9:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Lines

Rebels — Drew Pomeranz 6 2/3IP, 9H, 4ER, 2BB, 8K
Hogs — Drew Smyly (projected in the top 2-3 rounds) 6IP, 5H, 2ER, 1BB, 6K
Zack Cox (projected top 10-15 pick) 3/3 IBB, R, HBP, SB
Brett Eibner (projected in the top 2-3 rounds [as either a P or OF]) 2/4 2B, HR, 3RBI, 1HBP

I flipped back and forth between this and the Rangers game but I wasn’t really that impressed with what I saw of Pomeranz. He struggled with his control and didn’t throw much other than the FB. That said, the two Hogs hitters were very impressive — and that lineup is pretty sick all the way through. The Hogs are going to cruise to a win in this game as they are up 10-4 in the ninth….

by Dfarth on May 7, 2010 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Whoops

I messed up. Smyly is only a soph so I guess he wont be getting drafted. I could have sworn I read he was a top 2-3 round guy. Maybe next year…

does Strasburg get in AAA?

I’m guessing 3.

until the middle of June. I say around June 11th or 12th.

by joegonzo on May 7, 2010 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Nah

He’s only staying in the minors long enough to delay his arbitration clock (something I wanted the Cubs to do with Castro) sigh Anyways, I think that means he’ll be in the majors by the end of May.

I reject your reality and substitute my own.

by WayneCampbell08 on May 8, 2010 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Yea...

that was part of the reason I chose June 11th. Get him one more start after the time he can come up that way it looks like they aren’t trying to be “cheap”.

Matt Thompson:

6.2 IP, 3 H, 1R, 1BB, 9K 8-2 GB:FB KG from today

While the Rangers are a system loaded with pitching prospects, one scout loved what he saw from a lesser-known one in right-hander Matt Thompson. A seventh-round pick in 2008 out of a Texas high school, Thompson had a 4.38 ERA in a mediocre showing at short-season Spokane last year. He has bounced back this year with a 2.52 mark in six games for Low-A Hickory, although he’s still allowed 30 hits in 25 innings. The scout says you can ignore the numbers for now, as with Thompson, it’s all about dreaming on his future.

“He’s absolutely the perfect projection pitcher,” said the scout. “We’re talking 80 delivery, 80 arm action (on the 20-80 scouting scale), and it’s easy to dream on. He’s 88-92 mph now with sink, an average curve, and average change, but he could really move in the future.”

Alberto Cabrera

Another nice game for the Cubs A+ pitcher Alberto Cabrera. 5.1 IP, 2 ER, 7 K, 2 BB.

Control was a big problem for him before this year, but so far on the season he’s got 30 K and 5 BB in 31.1 IP.

Anyone have info on what he throws, or what his velocity is like?

by limozeen on May 7, 2010 9:17 PM EDT reply actions

All I know is that

he has a very live arm that can run the fastball into the mid-90’s. I haven’t heard anything specific on the breaking ball (I believe it’s a slider, but I’m not certain) and a change of some sort, although he has them in the back pocket.

He really surprised me with all the attention this offseason, and he had a strong spring. Really jumping up my radar of Cubs prospects.

Saw Strasburg tonight

Hit 100+ twice, sat in the 97-98 in the first. Velocity carried into the mid 90’s in the 5th and 6th. Curveball was dropping a ton tonight, last player he pitched to, froze and nearly broke his knees on a 3-2 that dropped to the helmet to the knees 12-6. However, there are some concerns already I have noticed and I did a few vids. He has the W motion which causes shoulder injuries and he was already wrapping his arm up by the 4th inning.

For the radar readings and your pitching mechanics “expertise”, respectively.

It’s only morons like you who think they know everything about mechanics from reading a few blogs and watching a couple dozen YouTube videos that have any problem with his pitching motion.

Maybe it didn't deserve that level of hate

but we do have an awful lot of armchair mechanics experts around here all of a sudden. Someone sees one start or a couple of youtube clips and all of a sudden they’re experts. I don’t buy that for hitters when people say that, but it’s 1000 times worse for pitchers.
