KG today
had negative reports from scouts on Stanton’s handling of breaking stuff. Good reports on Craig Kimbrel and Alex Torres, and bad reports on Jake McGee.
Starlin Castro:
“If people are expecting some lively, athletic middle infielder, he’s not that,” explained the scout. “He’s an average runner, and his body is thickening up, so for me it ultimately comes down to his bat.”
The scout went on to praise Castro’s defensive instincts and plus arm, and did find some room for improvement offensively, while still projecting a star-level offensive play.
Tyler Flowers:
“He just looks terrible behind the plate… he’s really scuffling back there,” said one veteran scout. “I saw him last year at Birmingham, and thought I could live with it considering the bat, but he’s now bad enough for me that I don’t think he’s close to stepping into an everyday job in the big leagues. I just can’t see Ozzie being happy with that kind of ability behind the plate.”

I’ll take part of the blame for that. Probably the best argument against him at the time was that we should be skeptical about rapid improvement in one’s defense, and it certainly appears Flowers has regressed.
On the other hand, I don’t think it was totally unreasonable to buy into the defensive improvement, and with average defense, excellent patience and plus power, that would make him a well above-average regular. At least, that was my reasoning for liking him where I did.
yeah
that was my take at the time. This self-same scout says based on last year he could live with the D. I saw a few reports of improvement.
I’m really not all that high on catcher D anyway. what’s he screwing up? Not framing pitches (do umps really fall for that consistently)? Balls in the dirt? Throwing nobody out? Calling the game?
On the other hand, ian Desmond is at a 4-5 WAR rate now, and one could say he was “way too low.” It is sort of early yet for all this.
Right, but it’s also a scouting report that flies in the face of the scouting reports we read during the offseason.
yup
And this same scout said last year he could live with the D given the bat. So for all we knew this off-season, he was competent enough with the glove. And it may be the scout saw him have a bad stretch. Guys can look lost at the plate, I can imagine they can look lost in the field.
Hardball Times
Same day as Goldstein’s quote from the scout. Not sure what Hagan’s expertise level is to judge, but here ya go:
Kimbrel
Those were some pretty glowing comments made about Kimbrel. Storen, and Scheppers get a lot more press, but he could be just as good, if not better. Looking forward to seeing his debut in the next few nights.
“It’s Wagner’s body, similar arm action, he uses his legs like Wagner, and he has the same explosive fastball and wipeout slider,” said the scout. “He’s over-the-top competitive, pitches with no fear, and seems to amp up his stuff when the game is on the line, and I love to see that.”
As to whether Kimbrel could end up with a career resembling Wagner, the scout was optimistic.
“Once his command arrives consistently, he’s legit,” said the scout. “When all is said and done, he’s a big-league closer, and a well above-average one for me.”
Kind of a weak day for pitchers..
Aside from Jeff Francis of course.
And the rest...
of the good prosepcts like Lincoln, Rondon, Jackson, Torres, Cashner, Barnese, Hagadone, Vizcaino, Font, and Colvin. But otherwise it is seriously a weak day for pitching :p
ETHAN MARTIN!!!!
Weak compared to most days.
Sorry I hurt your feelings. Put your tongue away.
really?
I tend to think this is a solid/above average day of pitching (in regards to prospect status). I’ve seen far worse days of pitching (in regards to prospect status) this year.
Any reason he is....
not in the majors right now? Actually a better question would be is there any GOOD reason he is not in the majors right now?
ETHAN MARTIN!!!!
I'm assuming...
Benjie Molina isn’t a good reason?
Not really...
I would much rather have Buster back there. Actually, the only good reason in my opinion would be if they had another stud already behind the plate like Mauer, Wieters, or McCann.
ETHAN MARTIN!!!!
Bengie Molina's a good reason to hide your peanut M&Ms.
As far as blocking Buster Posey from a major league job? No.

these the same people who started the rumors that bumgarner had velocity like that?
by IHateMitchMustain on May 6, 2010 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs
You’re being sarcastic though, right? Bumgarner was definitely mid-90s until his unexplained velocity loss the second half of last year.
I think a lot of it was
thoughts that guns might have been hot when there were reports of him sitting mid 90’s and touching up the upper 90’s. He was probably more low 90’s touching 95 or something, which is still excellent for a LHP.
http://bullpenbanter.com
i don't remember anybody ever saying upper 90s
It was always low 90s touching 95, but an outstanding FB because of his command
TheSouthWing.com - A Magazine of essays, prose and poems
he has the highest K%
of any pitcher (qualified) in any level (38.4%). he does have a 12.1 BB% but that isn’t too bad considering the Ks. also he is one of the youngest players in A+ ball.
by auclairkeithbc on May 6, 2010 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions
I really wonder how he’s going to develop. High strikeout numbers, high walk numbers, fly ball tendencies. It’s an interesting combination of statistical indicators, but the 39 Ks in 24 IP are definitely exciting.
BB numbers
Weren’t great last year, but are a bit better this year @12 in 24 innings. 4 of those came in a 1+ inning outing where they used him in relief because Brad Lidge made a rehab start. In games he has started, he has no more than 3 walks in any 1 game and has 8 walks in 22 1/3 innings. Still too much of a small sample to say that’ll be his rate over the course of the season, but, if it is, then that’s decent.
And, yes, the K rate is a knock-out.
and not very good ....again
Liam Hendriks had his worst start of the year btw, but he did have 7 K’s
Aaron Hicks 2-4

Looking more and more likely that Gutierrez winds up in the bullpen, but it was always worth a shot to give him a spin as a starter. I just wonder what he’ll look like as a reliever — will the stuff play up? Will he be able to miss enough bats to be a high leverage guy?
+1 And good question
I honestly, couldn’t tell you
BA seems to think in a bullpen scenario his fastball Would play up , I’m not going to provide any links though… Being a sinker baller, GB guy, I don’t think he’ll ever want to throw above 93 anyways ….
Yeah, I’m done seeing him as a possible future starter- especially with the Twins (I know I always say that)

Hector Rondon
Gave up a 1st inning home run tonight. ERA was at 9.13 heading in, with 8 HR surrendered in 22 innings.
What happened here? He threw 74 pretty solid innings at Triple-A last year (83 H, 8 HR, 13 BB, 64 K), but the wheels have totally come off this year. Any Indians fans have any insight?
He’s done: 6.0 IP, 9 H, 5 ER, 0 BB, 8 K, 4 HR.
I know he was never a groundball pitcher, and that one of the knocks on him was that he caught too much of the plate at times, but that’s 12 HR surrendered in 28.2 IP (3.77 HR/9). I mean, that is not good.
You know...
If some team gave me the opportunity to throw only 28.2 innings in AAA and I gave up 12 homers, that would not be good. An actual AAA pitcher doing it…. ouch.
yet he's still struck out 30 guys in 28.2 IP
It strongly looks like a guy who is working on some things. I’m still a believer.
Same deal with Tim Melville. He’s still trying to get his new mechanics and faster delivery down.
They both are still showing good stuff and getting lots of Ks… just no command and control.

i wasn't knocking his status
merely commenting on the amount of homers
Hardball Times says...
he is working on a new look slider. A slider that isn’t breaking could be a good reason for a whole lot of home runs. That being said, the home rate is downright scary right now.
"God, I'm from Cleveland. When is it going to be our time?"
Thanks.
I have him as a minor league stashee in one keeper league, but aside from that, I’ve genuinely liked him and thought him a bit underrated over the past couple of years. Obviously the Indians are in no rush to bring him up, but I hope for their sake that he turns it around to become a part of the next good Indians squad.

Cashner (DH gm 2): 5.2 IP, 8K, 3BB, 2H, 0R. 98 pitches, 61 strikes.

As the second youngest player in the Carolina League, LJ Hoes is batting .316 with 20 walks and 13 strikeouts.
Hoes
He was drafted in the third round in 2008 and signed for $490,000. Had an excellent debut in the GCL, demonstrating an advanced approach at the plate. The Orioles advanced him to Delmarva (Low-A) in 2009 and he held his own. Orioles liked that and they weren’t expecting him to have a huge season. His advanced approach at the plate wasn’t there while he was with Delmarva and he struggled on defense, making a bunch of errors. He was an outfielder in high school and started playing second base when the Orioles drafted him. I can say from spring training that the organization is making a HUGE effort to improve his defense. He had a bunch of 1 on 1 talks with the coaches and spent more time in the field than anyone else there.
His performance this year has been beyond impressive. He has pretty good bat speed and a nice, short swing. Not to mention above-average speed. If I have time I’ll upload some video of him.
Let me know if you want to know anything else about him!
by Jordan Tuwiner on May 7, 2010 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions
Interesting
He always had good tools but I never saw him having such a complete reversal in his BB rate. He has almost walked more in one month than all of last year. If his defense does not improve, I would be interested to see what he could do in centre. He definetly has the speed to cover it and is less challenging in terms of handling the ball. His bat plays up better in CF than 2B also, in my opinion.

with xavier there
lj isn’t likely to get much cf time. Avery looked good defensively when I caught him. I’ll have to watch Hoes again. I caught a few Keys games this year, but it seemed like they were always having an off day when I saw them.
Thanks, definitely someone to keep an eye on.
Sounds like the coaches are at least hopeful he’ll stick at second base. What’s the plan if he doesn’t… third or left field? And does he project to hit for any power?
I suppose he could try the outfield, most likely LF but I believe he’ll be able to stick at second. He could have some pop, maybe 10-15 HR.

Still a bit raw with his international background, but his AA transition has gone quite well thus far. Big key for him will be maintaining his plate discipline. Tons of power.

HR in back to back to back games now. 2-4 with a walk (and HR) on the night, follow two consecutive 3-5 (with a HR) games. He has a 10.8 BB%, a 13.5 K%, a .219 ISOP, a .298 avg, .360 OBP, .510 SLG and 10 SB so far. And he’s the 2nd youngest player in A+ ball (good home park, but he’s been better on the road).

Justin Smoak 1/4 1 HR 1 K, on the season now hitting .196/.309/.457 8 BB 9 K 3 HR and 3 2B, once his BABIP normalizes a bit he’s going to be a hell of a player. Power enough for sure.

ETHAN MARTIN!!!!
I question if he actually has the tools to be great.
I’ve seen his range and ability to stay at SS questioned. I’ve also seen his power potential questioned quite a bit. He has a line drive, inside out, Stanford style swing. I just don’t think there’s a star ceiling there. I like him a good bit, but I just think he has a good chance to be an above average SS with most of his value in his bat.

Green and defense
Isn’t his arm the biggest defensive question mark? I haven’t seen his range questioned.
Mostly arm, but a little of both, as it hinders his range to his right.
Gary (Oakland): What does the crystal ball say on Grant Green future as a 6-3 SS? Bobby Crosby (oh no), JJ Hardy (hmmm) or Jeter (yeah right).
Jim Callis (2:53 PM): This year, I’ve had more scouts question Green at shortstop than think he’ll stay there, so I’d guess that he’d wind up moving in the future.
http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/29549/mlb-with-jim-callis
matt (mohegan sun CT): Hi Jim – Lightning round – Does Grant Green stick at SS and does he comp a young Renteria?
Jim Callis (2:46 PM): Not certain he stays at shortstop, but I’ll say yes for now. I don’t love the Renteria comp—more power, less athletic.
http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/31979/mlb-with-jim-callis
I vacillate between thinking he’s overrated and underrated. Really not a huge fan of the bat(not sure the power potential is there), but he should be good enough all around to be a solid, good option at SS for a while. I’m not arguing he’s a bad player or prospect, mind you – just that I’m not sure he has much star potential. I think that talk is still coming off his Cape League performance two years back.

inside out swing
I’m wondering if you might be willing to do a Bullpen Banter piece on players with inside out swings and how it hinders them – I know this is an issue with Morrison as well. I’m not a scout but when people say inside out swing I think Lance Berkman. I’m sure I’m completely wrong but would love to know more.
