MOD Rangers No. 3
This is the third Rangers MOD - the first two are here and here. Since we posted these, the Rangers have filed for bankruptcy and there are certainly questions about what this filing means for the team's amateur draft budget.
This development is particularly ill-timed because the Rangers have 4 of the first 49 picks and 6 picks overall in the first three rounds. Ranger fans have to hope the ownership situation and bankruptcy and sale are wrapped up quickly to allow the new ownership group to supplement the current spending limits. In the meantime, can the Rangers afford to draft a player that would require much more than slot money to sign in the hopes this will occur (Austin Wilson at No. 22, for example)? Who is really calling the shots for Texas in this draft?
With this said, the Rangers will probably take the safest possible selection at No. 15 and may gamble a bit with the No. 22 pick, which, as far as I can tell, would return a compensation pick in 2011 if not signed. The Rangers would probably play it safe, fiscally speaking, in the compensation, 2nd and 3rd rounds.
That said, a few questions:
1. Who do you consider to be the most signable picks that make sense for Texas at No. 15?
2. What will Texas' draft philosophy be regarding the No. 22 pick?
3. What players would Texas be targeting with the two supplemental picks (No. 45 and 49)?
4. What players will Texas be looking for in the 2nd and 3rd rounds?

There seems to be some movement
going on right now. Choice’s stock has risen significantly and I don’t think he’ll be there. Wimmers has a good arm and affordable price. It just depends on how others grade him and whether teams in front of the Rangers can/will spend elsewhere.
If the Blue Jays pony up for Wilson that’s one more sign-able player that falls.
At 15 I want: Grandel, Choice, Wimmers, Workman
At 22 it’s: Covey, Cowart, Eibner, Castellanos or Cabrera
They’ll have more flexibility at 22 but I don’t expect them to go way overslot. Too many things are still up in the air. If the Rangers are sold I imagine they may offer some of the high schoolers taken later overslot money to make up for last year’s small class but otherwise they’ll play it pretty conservative.
I just know that if Grandel somehow magically falls to them he has to be the selection. He’s too good, at a position of need who will sign for around slot. It would be perfect.
From your post...
to Daniels’ ears lol.
Would love to see us pick Grandel if available and if not go with Wimmers.
Eibner at 22 would be a great fit.

If Grandal is around
I see nothing in his scouting reports that I don’t like. I’m less excited about Choice, Wimmers and Workman are good choices there. I’d take Vitek or any of those listed above at 22.

swing for the fences on 22
Clearly signability has to be a primary consideration on all the other picks and especially 15 on which there is no parachute. Which is why you swing for the fences on 22, hoping the over-slot money will be there by the time you need it. If not, you just get a do over next year, knowing that you can be reasonably aggressive for a second time with that pick, because by then there will be the money to back it up. At 15 Grandal sounds great if he is there, but I’m afraid that his combination of talent at a position a number of teams have a need at, and being signable, mean that he goes before us.
