Mets MOD #3 (The Magic Number)
After getting some good responses in our last MOD, I've started thinking about the idea of what our ideal draft budget should be set at for our three picks. I know there's all this talk about the Mets being stingy, come draft time, and while I think that that may be true about their number of draft picks, with some closer investigation, it doesn't necessarily seem to be true with regards to their budget. In 2008, the last year the Mets had a first rounder, they set their draft budget on their first 3 picks to be 4.034 Mil, which, while not a tremendous sum given that two picks were 1st rounders and 1 was a supplemental pick, still shows to me that the Mets are not terrified of spending a lot of money in the draft. In fact, their total draft budget in 08 was only about .4 mil less than the Sox's budget in 09, which says something. Additionally, without a Suppy pick or 2nd rounder, I feel like the possibility exists to go over slot in both the 1st and 3rd rounds. Look, if we're sticking to straight slot money, the budget shouldn't exceed around 4.5 Mil, at the most. But I'm leaning toward possibly a 5-5.5 Mil budget max on these first two picks. So, the question for this MOD is, what do you think we should set our budget at, and why. I'll try to use all of your posts, as well as my own opinion, to generate our budget. Once I have it, I will post it for all to see.

I think you should cap at 5.6 mil.

You're helpful
If you could get about 10 more guys to post this, then I think we’d be set
You’re name has 2k9 in it — what are you some 8 year-old who makes Pillsbury Doughboy cookies and jerks off to that bullshit video game with Tim Lincecum on the cover--

4-4.5 Million
Despite Wilpon’s claim of giving MInaya more flexibility to bring in FA’s the Mets team salary is LESS than it was last year. Wilpon has lost more than he has let on with Bernie Madoff and that, combined with the major league leading decline in attendance makes it unlikely that the Mets will exceed slot on any pick and may often reach for guys who will sign BELOW SLOT
Now that I think about it
4 Million may be at the top end. Last year the #7 pick signed for 2-2.2 Million and I would be SHOCKED if the Mets exceeded that figure this year and the second rounder will probably be someone we can land for $750,000-$1.25 Million so you do the math on the overall budget
that should say 3rd Rounder
i wish you could edit posts
Last year the Mets lacked a 1st Rounder and a Supplemental, did not pick until the end of the 2nd Round, had multiple guys among their first 10 picks not sign yet barely, if at all, exceeded slot for their first pick and only drafted 1 or 2 guys who fell due to signability and those guys got about $500,000 each
a bajillion

I don't think there is a set budget
Realistically, the Mets would spend as needed if one of Harper, Taillon, or Machado fell to them. That isn’t going to happen here in the community mock though, and there’s only a slightly better chance it happens in real life.
Beyond that, I doubt the Mets spend over $3M on their first pick, but that’s mostly because there won’t be anyone in this draft worth more than that. At pick 89, slot would be about $400k. It’s unlikely they’ll go over slot there, but if a guy you like falls and will cost up to $1M, I don’t think there’s any problem with that. In real life, there’s no way they are going to fret over about half a million if they have a shot at a guy they really like. It’s just not going to be often that there’s a guy they think is worth it there. But Matz last year did get $900k in round 2.
Seeing as the mock is only going 3 rounds, and only 2 picks for the Mets, I think it’s very unlikely you will actually spend more than $4M on the two picks. If Machado or Taillon falls, yes they’ll drop up to a $6M bonus on that one guy. But barring that, maybe Whitson could get near to $4M, but no one else is getting over $3.5M. Last year, there were 4 guys who got over $4M, and 2 others in the $3M-$4M range. There isn’t any more high end talent this year.
Figure if you stuck to slot, your budget for the two picks would be about $2.7M. A budget of about $4M total would be enough to go over slot as much as the Mets are likely to consider for the guys who are likely to be there.
