Opening Night Thread

Hornsby_medium

"People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."  ---Rogers Hornsby

Rogers Hornsby was a complete jackass, but he did produce my favorite baseball quotation of all time.

Today is Opening Night....I refuse to call it Opening Day since Opening Day is supposed to take place in Cincinnati.
Nevertheless, it is still something to celebrate. For tonight, I predict that the Red Sox (behind six shutout innings from Josh Beckett) defeat the Yankees 5-2.

Use this thread to share your thoughts regarding your favorite team's hopes (or fears) for the season.

I like the Red Sox alot this year. They have taken a lot of heat abouth their lineup from the media, but I like it. It has some nice power at the bottom of the lineup. A guy like Mike Cameron will have guys on, and he will hit the long ball at Fenway. I am a little worried about the pen. After Papelbon, Oki, and Bard, there really is not much.

I just hop the pirates don't lose more than 100 game

if we keep it under that and some of the guys make strides to improvement I will be very happy

I hope the team lucks into 65 wins, but more importantly, I pray Pedro mashes.

Why?

Losing an absurd amount of games is much more fun than watching another 95 loss team. Perhaps then Neal will realize that Jeff Clement doesn’t have the bat to play 1B.

Hornsby

Greatest baseball player ever. Expected baseball to mean as much to his teammates as it did to him.

As for my own team, I really hope YoGa demolishes the team that stole their moniker as reigning NL Wild Card champs. And I really hope that Carlos Gomez finally lives up to his potential and steps into a couple.

Great Quote John...

Just happy to have baseball back; nice sunny, warm weekend here…my local 9 will have a tough, tough year; I figure the Jays for 74 wins…if the injury bug hits, it could get exceedingly ugly…well, we won’t be in last place tomorrow morning!
Thanks again for the book and website John…it helps getting to this time of year all the easier.

Baseball

It starts with the fond expectancy of spring and ends with the cold, hard facts of autumn.

Tribe

I think the Indians can win 75 games, and will be happy if they do so. I see a Rays-Cardinals World Series

I think the Tribe will be better than a lot of folks think

I can see them being around .500 or better with a little luck,

A New Hope

is one of the many things I enjoy in anticipation of a new season (for all sports) especially baseball and football with the transition out of winter/summer. After failing miserably in the playoffs and going 0-10 versus the Evil Empire seems like long time ago in a stadium far, far away.

I will meet my brother to watch part of the game tonight and discuss the Twins new stadium and our chances without Nathan and hopefully come up with some options for trades or callups to help the pen.

I wish a more interesting game were on tonight

Red Sox/Yankees games do not interest me at all. I’m not sure whether I’ll watch the game or Life on Discovery.

Weird

I have an odd fondness for Rogers Hornsby.

Jays

I hope we continue along the path that Alex Anthopoulos and Paul Beeston have us on. They had a great off season in my opinion with such moves as:

1. Signing Adeinis Hechavarria to a $10 million deal
2. Trading Brandon “Minor” League for Morrow
3. Getting a solid return on the Halladay deal
4. Signing Lind to a great team friendly contract
5. More then doubling the scouting department
6. Promising to increase spending on the upcoming draft

As a Jays fan I am glad to be rid of Ricciardi who was a one of the least classiest guys both on and off the field. Hopefully the Jays take fourth in our division and build upon our young nucleus.

excellent

I wholeheartedly support, agree with, and endorse the John Sickels sentiment on “Opening Day.” Cincinnati is when and where the season begins.

Rangers

88 wins, AL West champs by about 5 games.

Padres

Surprise everyone and pull of a rousing 84 win season. This is not a bad baseball team at all. The only problem is all the great pitching in the division. I still say were in the wildcard hunt right up until the end. Then, who knows?
