That's nuts...
The Padres need to put this kid in a bubble for a month or two.
I'm interested again in Torres
He has been electric so far for Montgomery, and a call-up to Durham shouldn’t be too far away if he continues to impress.

Awesome.
I’ve tried time and time again, but I think I fall just on the wrong side of 25 in terms of being able to get into twitter. With all the work done for me maybe I can finally break my mental barrier. Thanks!
Scheppers to OKC
"I was going to say, 'You’re gay for Elvis.' But then I realized that I, too, am gay for Elvis." ~Adam J. Morris.
Holland will wind up filling whatever the first hole is in the rotation, right? Which would mean if Scheppers is utterly dominant, he’d get the major league call for the pen?
supposedly correct
They may let him pitch a month in AAA even if there is an opening in the Rangers pen. They do have some other options.
Thank you Houston for drafting Jason Castro.
BA Prospect Hot Sheet
No surprise, Mike Stanton at #1

Tidbit
The Jacksonville Suns right fielder’s name is listed on his birth certificate as "Giancarlo Cruz Michael Stanton," a long name for a long-ball hitter. The first half was given to him by his mother of Puerto Rican and African-American descent, and the second half is the same name as his Irish father.
By fifth grade, the kid’s first name had been mispronounced and misspelled so often by teachers, it just became convenient to go by Mike Stanton. Short and sweet, just like his baseball swing.
HOW COULD YOU FORGET !?!?!?

Who told Tabata he could flash an all-around game
SSS but last 46AB – .283/.384/.478 – w/ 2hr & 3sb (9sb on the season now)
Another starter of note today..
Erasmo Ramirez is getting his first start of the year for Clinton. He absolutely dominated the VSL last year to the tune of a 0.51 ERA in 88 innings, and has been similarly effective in long relief thus far in the Midwest league (0.84 ERA, 9/0 K/BB in 10.2 innings). He’s a pitchability guy, not a live arm. He sits 87-89 and tops out at 90, but the results have been nothing short of outstanding so far.
Again, not a great prospect, but on my radar in a Yusmeiro Petit/Doug Fister kind of way.
Drabek
7IP 4H 2ER 4BB 7K, 9gb/3fb – control a bit off early on, but the ground ball outs are nice to see
Last year in Double-A, his strikeout rate was down, he kept the walks to a minimum, and he wasn’t generating ground balls. It’s pretty much the opposite this year. Weird.

not really
1. Pitchers generally command their fastball better than their secondary pitches.
2. Pitchers who pitch out of the zone see more strikeouts, but typically also walk more batters. If you have a guy who can do the first part without the second part, then you’ve REALLY got something.
Best guess: last year Drabek was throwing more fastballs than usual as the year progressed, trying to conserve his arm and ward off injury in his first full season back from TJ by throwing fewer non-fastballs. This manifested statistically as a lower-than-expected K rate. Now Drabek is back to his normal pitch mix, which is predictably awesome.
You’re probably right. He was clearly tiring by the end of the year, but I figured those rates were due to him being able to fill the strike zone with his two-and-a-half (change was okay but needed work) pitch mix while lacking top velocity. That’s basically why I rated him so highly in the offseason prospect mix — I figured that his command was better than we expected, and that once his waning-in-the-2nd-half velocity bumped back up to 93-94, that pitch mix would be unhittable.
Turns out it’s more likely his command is still somewhat of an issue, and that those rates were due to him simply throwing more fastballs, as you said.
Tommy Joseph
Probably done for the day
2-3, HR, 2BB.
I'd like him so much more
If he wasn’t a 1B in the making. Interesting young bat otherwise.
Somehow...
that doesn’t bother me so much. Mostly because I think he may actually be a good defensive 1B. I’m a lot more worried about guys who were so immobile in HS that their high school team couldn’t even stick them somewhere else.
That said...
obviously he needs to rake to become a good prospect, and he’s nowhere near there yet.
OPS up at 1.045 now.

Braves
AAA:
Freeman – 2-3, BB; Now hitting .264 after that terrible start.
Craig Kimbrel – 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
Cory Gearrin – 1IP, 1H, 0R, 2BB, 1K
AA:
Eric Duncan – 2-5, 2B, HR; Now batting .343, maybe it’s coming together for him.
Mike Minor – 5IP, 5H, 4R(all earned), 3BB, 11K; I think he’s sacrificing control for Ks
Brett Butts – 2IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 6K; ERA at 0.71 Keep an eye on this guy, good stuff
Stephen Marek – 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K; Only remaining memory form the Tex deal has been lights out this year. He hasn’t given up a run yet.
High A:
Brett Oberholtzer – 5IP, 8H, 3R(All Earned), 0BB, 4K, 7:3 GO/AO; High A debut
Gerado Avila – 3-4
Hit post too soon
High A cont:
Gerado Avila – 3-4, RBI; He seems to be pretty good why did the Mariners let him go?
Low A:
Christian Bethancourt – 2-4, 2 2B; seems to be snapping out of his slump
Cory Rasmus – 5IP, 4H, 1R, 0BB, 4K; coming back strong after his TJ
Robinson Lopez – 4IP, 3H, 1R, 1BB, 4K
Check out...
former first round pick Bryan Morris for Pittsburgh pitching for Bradenton tonight. 7ip 4h 0bb 7k’s. Now has a 0.98era on the season.
Also, Mr. Overdraft himself, Tony Sanchez, hits another HR in a league that is supposed to be bad on hitting prospects. He has a .344/.463/.563 line so far through 18 games after tearing through the Sally league last year. Him, Morris, and fellow Marauder Borck Holt who is off to a really hot start also, are going to be looking at promotions to Double A very shortly.
ETHAN MARTIN!!!!
big time
I recently found the first “good” clip of game action feature Hosmer that I have seen. Love the balance and bat speed:

random cubs thoughts
after arguably his worst game this season, it’s good to see Brett come back like this. Still not hitting for enough power, but that should come.
The thing I was really excited about was Kyler Burke’s 2/5, 1 R, 1 2b, 1 RBI, 2 K. 5/9 the past two games, I’m hoping he’s found a switch. Don’t need him to be in AA this year …. just hope he can be solid in A+.
Good to see the Daytona bats get going a bit, particularly key guys. LeMahieu still hasn’t shown any power (84 AB’s, 20 H … 1 XBH (2B)). I didn’t expect much, but that’s quite low.
Pitching wise, I have pondered whether or not Dae Eun Rhee is better as a pen arm. That said, it’s early and he’s still working his way back, but that’s been a question on Rhee even before the surgery. It was nice to see Rusin come back with 3 shutout after his horrific start to the year.
Peoria still can’t hit, but one of my favorite sleeper arms in the Cubs system, Nick Struck, had another solid outing (complete game … because it was shortened, 5 shutout, 1 bb, 5 K’s, 3:5 GO/FO).
Chris Carpenter had himself a decent outing (5 ip, 4h, 2bb, 4 K’s, 1 solo homer, 6:5: GO/FO).
I really wonder if Chirinos is a late bloomer … and while I haven’t changed my low expectations, I am hopeful Tony Thomas has found something discipline wise and may develop into something useful (E. Patterson utility type?).
a complete game no-hitter no less!
Chirinos has been really surprising. He turns 26 this summer, so he would be on the late blooming side for sure; I kind of wonder if he’s been aided by playing on a team that overall has been ridiculously hot. (Which is also what’s given me a little hesitation about Castro; I hope he gets at least half a season to see if his #s stay up, before they bring him to AAA or the majors.)
On the flip side, like you said, a lot of the Daytona guys have started slow. Lemahieu is a complete mystery. Junior Lake looks positively releasable, hitting 213/224/255 (with seven errors!) I think Jackson has been fine, no homers yet, but plenty of extra base power, and the plate discipline has been a very pleasant surprise. He’s been hitting leadoff a lot, so maybe they’ve been stressing getting on base over hitting for power?
by PrincetonCubs on May 1, 2010 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm not a fan of Junior Lake
I know, toolsy, yada ya, but seriously, they’ve been pushing him hard, and I just don’t see a justification. Sure, he might be more physically gifted than Starlin, but there’s no sign that he’s ready for this push. Was a tad surprised they didn’t have him in Peoria.
