OK, so it wasn't another HR
but Oscar Tejeda announced his presence with a triple in his first AB.
what positoion?
that isn’t good

pitching duel
Dolis 6-2-0-1-2, 11 GO
vs
W.Peralta 6-4-0-2-5, 9 GO
Does anybody have any updates on Dolis' stuff?
If it’s as good as people thought, then why isn’t he striking out more batters?

inconsistency with the stuff
his control has improved this year overall, but while his breaking ball can be sharp at times, and the chnageup can show good depth at times, it isn’t consistently good yet.
He’s been far more impressive than i Imagined this year with his durability and improvements, but his future is still,in all likelihood, in the pen.
Before the year started
BA was talking about a fastball that can touch triple-digits; is it that good or has it regressed?

Montero down to .241
Should have kept him in AA I think to start the year
I'm not sure, he's changed his stance compared to what I saw last year in AA
He’s moving his bat crazy like Teixeira does and i’m not sure that is a good thing. His stance and bat were much more calm last year in AA.
Nick Hagadone
3IP, 5H, 1ER, 2BB, 5 K’s
Does anyone know why he was removed so early? Although Nick’s been good at A+, I’d like to see him improve on his control….
Chris Withrow rocked
2.1IP, 7H, 7ER, 2BB, 4K’s, 1HR
ERA up to 9.00 on the year
Lousy secondary stuff
Has been his early problem
He’s trying to blow bitters away with his FB way too much
Fat man is no more,
Bursting on through Heaven's Door
Come on in, says Bill
Aumont
6 Innings 0, Hits, 0 Runs, 2 BB, 4 K’s (8:5 GO:FO)
Starting to pitch pretty well.
Madison Bumgarner
Starting for AAA Fresno at Portland so we can see how road radar gun has his velocity.
Still mediocre
This guy is a backend starter at best I think. Like I have said in the past, highly overrated. LeBlanc will have a better career than Bumgarner, he at least has one plus pitch.
Nick Franklin
2-4 HR
Showing more power and overall skills than all the analysts and scouts said he had, which was said to be average across the boards.
Young players starting on a tear
Destin Hood 2/4 2b 4 RBI
Trayce Thompson 1/3 2b
Thompson not done...
in the 2nd game of the doubleheader: 2-3, 2B, SB
i don’t think there is a prospect in baseball with more helium right now than this guy
not baseball intellect
BA had a blog entry about a Stanton comp months before BI made the comp
the funny thing is
This guy is to Andy Seiler as Tim Tebow is to Mel Kiper Jr.
I was referring more to this
Basically, because Kiper A) doesn’t see how Tebow fits into his scouting system and B) is insecure about ANYBODY else being right about a draft pick that he wasn’t fond of, combined with the level of Tebow hype . . .well . . .
When Tebow got drafted, Kiper had absolute wolf eyes, and he looked like a guy who was about to pull out a speech written the back of a napkin while on his third martini the night before. Something to the effect of, “I know Tim Tebow has great intangibles, and he’d go #1 if it was all about intangibles, but I guarantee you this: I will personally run this man over to prevent him from becoming a successful NFL quarterback and showing me up.”
I know we all are looking for the next rising commodity in the prospect world
but let’s not forget that Giancarlo Cruz is ridiculous. He’ll play all of the 2010 season as a 20-year-old and is up to .311/.462/.656. This is Stanton now. Still a strikeout per game, but now also a walk per game. And as always an ISO over .300 and the bombs come in bunches.

Matt Moore
Moore of the same…
5IP 3H 1ER 4BB 8K
He’s gotta figure out a way to limit the walks but if he does it’s going to be sick…

Ha.
He started out the same way last year, only his BBs were even more extreme. He’ll settle down when he gets a few more starts under his belt. He may never have plus control but I expect him to rein it in a little bit.
Let's...
wait a bit before comparing Weglarz to a player who had a 3-year run as the best hitter in the American League.
weglarz is much better
Wow Blackburn makes nearly identical money as Baker does now....
by SteveHoffmanSlowey on Apr 25, 2010 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Really?
Weglarz is a year older than Chisenhall so let’s compare the former’s 2008 with the latter’s 2009, when each play in Kingston:
- Weglarz had an OBP 50 points higher because of his ability to draw walks.
- Chisenhall had a SLG% 60 points higher, hitting 18 homers and 26 doubles compared to 10 and 20 for Weglarz in almost the same number of at-bats.
- In his first full year at 3b, Chisenhall struggled with errors but scouts see the tools that would make him a good fielding 3b (he was formerly a SS). Weglarz was a mediocre corner outfield whom scouts say may need to be shifted to 1B.
In sum, Chisenhall showed more power and Weglarz showed a greater ability to get on base, with the edge held by each about the same. That would lead defense as the tiebreaker, and Chisenhall had a big edge there.
I like Weglarz and he’s off to a great start this season. Perhaps the power will come. He’s a big guy and his plate discipline bodes well. But most prospect gurus give Chisenhall the edge, including John Sickels, I don’t think you’ll find too many people who thing Weglarz is “much better.”
So you’re saying Weglarz in a landslide?
He has better plate discipline and power, but Chisenhall’s a much better hitter, not to mention the difference in defensive value.
Right now Chisenhall is doing what everybody expect him to do (minus some power, but that was also expected). What I like most is that he’s walking more so far this year. At the end of the day, Chisenhall could become a .300/.370/.460 type of 3rd baseman with some very solid defense (and maybe I’m selling his power short). Weglarz on the other hand could become the new Hafner, but he could also become Jack Cust. Big difference between those two.
I meant ChisenHallOfFame in a landslide.
The BIG difference for me is that only one of these guys will provide positive defensive value.
I’m curious about how the leg injury affected Weglarz, but before I had him pegged as an eventual 1B. I also think he has some holes in his swing that will be exploited in the majors. Gotta love the power and patience, though. Still takes me .02 seconds to answer “Chisenhall.”

Speaking of...
Lonnie Chisenhall, 3B, Indians (Double-A Akron)
The top prospect in the Indians’ system not named Carlos Santana, Chisenhall hit 22 home runs last year, and while the 2008 first-round pick has yet to go deep this year in 67 at-bats this season, everything else is going great, as he’s gone 9-for-19 in his last four games to lift his averages to .358/.427/.433. He could be in the big leagues as early as next year, and that home-run power should start showing up any day now, the way he’s hitting.

he should be a dodger prospect....
james loney russsell martin and blake dewitt are all like that..
I still don't get why people had this guy so high.
Very “blah.” He went #54 on the CPL, above Tanner Scheppers, Jordan Lyles, Vizcaino, Alex Colome, Will Myers, Moustakas, etc…
Still don’t think he’s an impact guy at all. Okay hitter and good glove.

Like who?
"The A's have to be setting some record this year for simultaneously maximizing team quality and player anonymity. I guess that’s sort of their thing though." - Luke in MN
Tony Sanchez
Travis D’Arnaud
Max Stassi
Willin Rosario
Jonathan LuCroy
Luke Bailey (if the arm comes back he’s 100% a better prospect than Castro for me)
Christian Bethancourt
Caleb Joseph
Wilson Ramos
Kyle Skipworth
Tommy Joseph
JR Murphy
and a million other guys who are just a little worse defensively and with more bat potential. Not to mention the guys who are clearly better.
You may say you’d take Castro over most or all of those – fine. I probably would, too. BUT, the point is he’s not that much different. I’ll take Will Myers or Derek Norris EASY.
Regardless, I prefer to populate the front and middle of my top 100 lists with guys whose ceiling is something more than “Solid regular.” YMMV. I don’t hate Castro – I had him my 6th best catcher (#73). In all fairness, I’d probably slide him down a little if I was writing it today, though.

I agree that he's not a top 60 prospect
I don’t agree that there are a ton of guys like him who rate much lower. None of those guys are as good defensively as Castro, save for Sanchez maybe. I would have those two in the 80-100 range…the others, way lower (except maybe Lucroy, I have an irrational love for him).
"The A's have to be setting some record this year for simultaneously maximizing team quality and player anonymity. I guess that’s sort of their thing though." - Luke in MN
What is this supposed to be a list of?
No way are even a quarter of those guys anywhere close to as good a defender as Castro.
It is because he is a great defensive catcher
Have heard some say he has a chance to be the best defensive catcher in the game.
I don’t expect him to hit for much power to speak of (though certainly more than he’s showing at AAA so far) but his on-base skills are excellent.
I see him as a Yadier Molina type, which is a pretty darn good player.
And sure, he’s not going to be a star, but floor has value. A guy who you are 90% certain is going to produce between 2-4 wins per season for years to come is a good prospect IMO.
It definitely does...
I just feel it has way more value to me if I were running an organization than if I were writing a top 100.

2 for 3 and 2 BBs
316/344/509 on the season
Joseph Gardner
4 ip | 4 hits | 1 walk | 6 ks
32 k to 8 walks in 18 innings
Daaaaamn.
Has Gardner’s stuff improved since he was drafted? What he’s done so far is ridiculous.
On top of all that wicked line, he’s running a 10:1 GO:AO ratio so far too.
Starling Marte
2 for 4, with a walk and stolen base
345/448/473 for the year
Devin "the Resurrection" Mesoraco
keeps raking . . .

300/379/620 for the year
Chris Owings
1 for 3 with a walk, double
313/352/507 so far in the MWL
Better prospect right now: Chris Owings or Nick Franklin?
Daniel Fields
Dude’s supposed to be in extended spring training, but instead he’s handling hi-A . .
1 for 4 with a walk tonight
308/379/424
Encouraged by the 3 walks and just 6 strikeouts in 26 ab’s . . .
Fields...
is very exciting. Amazing how the kid’s handled his first handful of A+ games this early. I’m really glad the Tigers didn’t mess around and converted him to CF right away.
If he stays up I expect him to start getting exposed in the next couple of weeks, but it’s really cool to see him holding his own.
Ogando
Alexi Ogando was absolutely fantastic today, going 4 innings (very limited pitch count), 1 hit, 1 walk and 8 strikeouts, He featured a 95-97 mph fastball, and a mid-80s slider that he repeatedly used for strikeouts and to induce weak contact. He has been every bit as good, and maybe a bit better than the much more highly touted Scheppers and could move up very quickly.
Re:
This is one of those kids with visa problems right? Are the Rangers looking at him as a SP or RP?
yep
The younger one (26) and RP. He’s just starting right now so he can work more on his offspeed pitches. I also saw him on TV today and he just overmatched the hitters.

Mike Newman (Scouting the SAL) was at the Hickory Game
#Rangers Font averaged 92 MPH in a long first inning. Popped 94 2X and 96 once. Better CB than last year, still doesn’t work inside enough

I still struggle to find exciting things about #Rangers Font. If Sally guys can handle low to mid 90’s on the outer half, MLBrs can 2

Report: Red Sox sign Cuban Catcher Adalberto Ibarra
Adalberto Ibarra is a Red Sox
Written by Cubano on 25 April 2010
Former Camagüey standout Adalberto Ibarra has reached a Major League deal with the Boston Red Sox. The contract is a 5 year deal worth $4.3 million that includes a signing bonus of $1.5 million. The Red Sox see Ibarra as a future catcher.
Ibarra is a leader in and off the field. He is a very vocal player and plays the game the right way. He has an elegant batting stance and can hit to all fields.
Adalberto Ibarra becomes the second Camaguey player to land a Major League deal in less than a month. Earlier, Tampa Bay signed Leslie Anderson. Ibarra joins SS José Iglesias and OF Jorge Padrón in the Boston organization.
