4/22 MiLB Discussion

Ha!  I’ve never started one of these.  Gotta learn some time…

Freddie Freeman on the afternoon (Gwinnett 8 to 3 win over the Norfolk Tides in the series finale):

4-for-4, 2 HR, 2B, 3 R, 4 RBI, BB.

His OPS goes from 505 to 731.  I love the early season stats.

Aroldis Chapman going today.  Also: Scheppers, Rowell, Lyles, J.J. Hoover, Neil Ramirez

Others pitching today?

What else is going on out there?

Way to go Freddie!!!

As a Brave fan this is awesome news! Hope he keeps it up, I guess it took that one HR yesterday to get him going.

can anyone give me a rundown on this guy?

Strengths/weakness, potential that scouts may have mentioned?

This...

originally caught my eye with thompson, from march 2009:

http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/draft/?p=596

Speaking of adjustments, BPs Goldstein wrote the other day that Thompson has "shown up this year with a much better idea at the plate and a significantly shorter and smoother swing.

Stuff

Very raw, terrific athlete (father was an NBA player). Impressive raw power potential.

I think most expected him to struggle through short season ball as he learns to play; the fact that he’s holding up okay in the Sally means there’s major helium here.

i'm crushing hard on him right now.

didn’t expect this start. Stanton-potential here.

3 singles, 2 steals, 1 double tonight…. up to .388.

what do we make of him?

by rdf8585 on Apr 22, 2010 10:19 PM EDT reply actions

Solid

Skeptical of his power potential, but he’s got solid tools otherwise.

Plate discipline and defensive ability will decide his future. I don’t see him as a top 100 candidate at the moment, but he might reach the fringes by year’s end.

by mrkupe on Apr 22, 2010 11:25 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Walks

This is something that gets overlooked for international signees. These guys are showcase players who are extremely raw and inexperienced. You can’t look at them the same way you do 18 year old Americans/Canadians.

Beat me to Dee

by Jaeti on Apr 23, 2010 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions

4 BBs on the year...

Does it sound like I’m taking another shot at him? I’m not!

4 BBs and 10 Ks in 60 PAs this year is actually an improvement. He had 12 walks all of last year in 458 PAs.

His line was atrocious before tonight, though: .250/.300/.357. And, oh yeah, he may not stick at 3B.

by alskor on Apr 23, 2010 12:28 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

I always want to bang him on the plate discipline thing, too. But he’s more than doubled the walk rate in the early going. Classic half-full, half-empty.

by Jaeti on Apr 23, 2010 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions

by Ltisme on Apr 23, 2010 12:28 AM EDT reply actions

Obviously nit-picking here, but I'd love to see Posey show a little more pop before he's called up.

I know he kept it around a .200 IsoP last year, but he’s the kind of guy I expect to click and DOMINATE in AAA before carrying it to the bigs.

Nice start for Main, there

Scheppers has 3 baserunners in his 4 appearances. 3. I’m worried about his splits, though, twice as many hits allowed against lefties. :)

Mendonca is the anti-Smoak. 13 K’s, 0 BB’s, 0 HR’s so far this year.

Beethoven sucks.

by t ball on Apr 23, 2010 1:29 AM EDT up reply actions

YEAH

Scheppers has been flat dealing. 13K’s in 8 innings. I suppose he’ll see AAA action in the next few months and then possibly the big club if they need the help.

What do they do with Feliz?

Move him to the rotation, or use Scheppers to set him up?
