Teach Me About Jarred Cosart
I'll admit, I didn't really know who the guy was until last night. Reading the daily game thread and seeing everyone gushing over him, it piqued my interest. So I looked him up, he's a 19 year old (soon to be 20) pitching in A Ball. He had about 7 games in A Ball last year, and from what I'm reading, he was selected in the 38th round of the 2008 draft. The thing that really blows me away is the K/BB ratio. Last year, he had a 25/7 ratio, and this year already, he has a 24/3 in just 17 innings. So, if anyone can share any info on him, what type of stuff he has, ceiling, potential, etc, that would be great. Thanks!

Coasrt
here’s a good article on him from this spring…he has definite ace potential
38th round pick by the Phillies back in 2008 and bought out of a scholarship to MIzzou for $550K. Flashed fantastic arm strength in high school, but Phillies needed to revamp his mechanics; that plus some lingering shoulder soreness limited him to just 25 GCL innings last year. Created a serious buzz in Phillies camp this year with the raw stuff he was showing, and was pegged by many insiders as a huge breakout candidate.
He’s still very raw, but reports have him sitting 92-94 with his fastball and touching 97. Has a curve that shows great potential, though the change up needs work. Was a very good two-way player in high school (he was likely to play both ways at Mizzou). As far as ceiling goes… he’s a flamethrowing righthander with top of the rotation potential. But like any 19-year old flamethrower, there are plenty of things that can go wrong, so we’ll have to wait and see.
Thanks
Thanks for the responses. The mechanics looks clean in that video, but I’m no pro scout.
Not sure if anyone else here has ESPN Insider, but Keith Law talked about Cosart in one of his recent chats
“I’m not really sure what you’re asking, but if you live near Lakewood, go see them when Jarred Cosart pitches. Apparently he’s added a lot of velocity – I just heard he held 95-96 in a late-March start – and he might be the second-best prospect in that system all of a sudden.”
He’s doesn’t turn 20 until late May, so he’s still got a good deal of development ahead of him. But he’s a different prospect if he’s holding in the mid-90’s, and he could very well be their second-best prospect now. Law said that he could arrive by 2012, which would have him at just 21-years-old. That’d be pretty quickly, and Law isn’t exactly the most optimistic of evaluators.
He really appears to have turned a corner, which is lucky for a Philly farm system that took a huge hit in the Halladay and Lee deals.

I still love that system
There are so many guys with huge upsides (although really raw). If that Lakewood team performs well, they’ll jump back into the elite systems.
Yeah, it's really the only way that they could deal Drabek, Taylor, d'Arnaud, Knapp, Carrasco, Donald, and Marson
Without taking that big of a hit. Their system is just loaded with helium.
Brown is obviously a stud if he puts it all together. May, Aumont, Cosart, Ramirez, Colvin and Mathieson give them some pitchers with some serious upside. And then you got Valle, Santana, Gose, Gillies, Castro, James and Collier on top of that, in terms of hitting prospects.
It’s not a great system, because so much of the talent is projected and raw at this point, but it could re-emerge as a top system pretty quickly if things go right.

That 2008 Phils draft has had some crazy returns pitching wise.
2nd Round – Jason Knapp 2.88 FIP, 161 K’s in 128 innings.
4th Round – Trevor May 3.10 FIP, 129 K’s in 102 innings.
38th Round – Jarred Cosart 2.25 FIP, 49 K’s in 42 innings.
Lot of other interesting names from that draft as well.
That Cosart pick is looking freaking awesome right now.
It was a little ballsy giving him roughly $400K, but man is it working out now.
